VIDEO: Oil rig still smoldering day after Coast Guard helicopter rescues 9 workers at Sabine Pass shipyard A jack up oil rig is still burning at a Sabine Pass shipyard Friday morning almost 24 hours after a fire broke out trapping nine workers who had to be rescued by helicopter. The Nine workers are thankful to be alive after being plucked from the top of the rig by a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter in Sabine Pass, Texas. A minor amount of smoke could still be seen coming from the rig Friday morning according to Greg Benson of the Port Arthur Fire Department who also said the fire is still being monitored. "The fire is mostly out, it just has to burn itself out. Can't imagine it will take more than another day or so," Benson said. Crystal Holmes with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office says at 12:35 p.m., a driver saw smoke and called 911. "The quick response and the coast guard being able to come over and do the aerial rescues that made all the difference in the world," Holmes said. KBMT-TV ABC/NBC 12 BEAUMONT Amarillo Rotary South names Stallwitz as 2021 Amarillo Firefighter of the Year Continuing with its first responder area awards, the Amarillo South Rotary Club named Marshall Stallwitz as its 2021 Amarillo Firefighter of the Year on Thursday morning. Stallwitz has been with the Amarillo Fire Department (AFD) for five and a half years. He is an integral member of the AFD Compliance Program and one of a handful of members of the department's Peer Support Team. During his time with AFD, he served as a chaplain and a Critical Incident Support Management Facilitator. AFD Fire Chief Jason Mays spoke about the process involved in choosing Stallwitz over the many deserving candidates who serve in his department. "It is always tough to make a selection of one firefighter for this, but once his name came up in the nomination process, his overall contributions made him one of the easiest choices to make for the reward," Mays said. AMARILLO GLOBE-NEWS Remembering Houston's deadly Alief daycare fire in 2011: 4 children killed, 3 injured; Jessica Tata remains behind bars PHOTOS: On February 24th, 2011, four children died after they were left alone at an Alief home daycare and the house caught fire while their caregiver shopped at a nearby store. Elias Castillo, 16 months, Shomari Dickerson, 3, Elizabeth Kojah, 20 months, and Kendyll Stradford, 20 months, all died in the fire. Three other children were seriously injured. The home caught fire when Jessica Tata -- Jackie's Child Care owner -- left the house to shop at Target while a pan of grease cooked on the stove. Surveillance cameras at a Target captured images of Tata shopping at the store when the fire started. When she got home to Crest Park near Waypark shortly before 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 24, 2011, the house was on fire. In 2012, Tata was 24 years old when she was convicted of felony murder in the death of Elias. She is now serving an 80-year sentence for the death of Elias. KPRC-TV NBC 2 HOUSTON Firefighters responds to fire in a northwest Austin hotel room Austin firefighters responded to a fire overnight at a northwest Austin hotel. The Austin Fire Department said units got the call around 12:55 a.m. Friday reporting smoke and fire alarms going off at the Woodsprings Suites located at 13689 N U.S. 183. When crews arrived, they say they found the fire in a single room of the 4-story hotel. It had been controlled by the sprinkler system, but firefighters were still left with removing the smoke out of the building. AFD said no injuries were reported. The occupants were placed into 1st-floor rooms in the meantime. KEYE-TV CBS 42 AUSTIN Dallas firefighters file suit after injuries from 2021 Highland Hills Apartments explosion VIDEO: Three Dallas firefighters who were seriously injured during an Oak Cliff apartment explosion in 2021 are now suing multiple entities. The September explosion was blamed on a gas leak caused by a man who shot into an apartment unit at the Highland Hills Apartments. The suit is against the apartment complex, its management companies and Atmos Energy. According to the lawsuit, the Texas Railroad Commission found the complex failed to meet federal and state standards in multiple areas. "Their injuries from the explosion are permanent, but they were preventable," said attorney Brant J. Stogner. Attorneys argue that while the bullet may have started the leak, they also blame negligence. KDFW-TV FOX 4 DALLAS 100+ crashes in 24 hours: Austin first responders work during icy conditions Dozens of crashes kept first responders extra busy Thursday as ice covered the roads across Central Texas. The Austin Fire Department said iced-over, elevated roadways created dangerous conditions. "We saw over the last 24 hours over 100 collisions that we responded to," said Brandon Wade, assistant chief of operations with the AFD. On Thursday morning, Austin-Travis County EMS responded to 40 collisions; 13 of them were rollovers. "We did see an uptick in traffic injuries as people got up to go to work," said Wesley Hopkins, interim assistant chief with Austin-Travis County EMS. Both departments are actively hiring. AFD has about 100 vacancies, and ATCEMS said it is looking to fill positions as well. KXAN asked how many vacancies the department has but has not heard back yet. VIDEO: 2 Die As Small Plane Crashes Into Pennsylvania Neighborhood A small plane crashed and exploded in a Bucks County neighborhood on Thursday, killing both people on board. The crash occurred around 5 p.m. on Morgan and Victoria lanes in Hilltown Township. A ring camera from Catherine LaPat's home captured the blast. "I heard the engine shut off and glanced up and it did a flip and a spiral over my head," LaPat told NBC10. After the crash, LaPat and other neighbors ran toward the plane to try and help the people on board. The crash also caused Tariq Thomas' truck to catch fire. "I was thinking I have chemicals in the back there and people are walking over," Thomas said. A propeller from the plane also flew into Thomas' home. "On impact, different shrapnel hitting different homes," Thomas said. WCAU-TV NBC 10 PHILADELPHIA Related with Video: 2 Dead in Fiery Small Plane Crash in Hilltown Township Firefighters union in Virginia wins vote to represent first responders in collective bargaining A firefighters union in Alexandria has won the right to collectively bargain on behalf of first responders in the city. This win is being called ‘historic' — it's the first time in decades that a union will be able to collectively bargain contracts for public sector employees in the state of Virginia. Josh Turner, president of the union, IAFF Local 2141, says it's been a long time coming. "It's been 44 years since public employees could have a seat at the table," said Turner. Collective bargaining between for public sector employees has not been allowed in the state for quite some time, after a Virginia Supreme Court ruling 1977 prevented collective bargaining for government workers in the state. That is, until a law took effect in May 2021, allowing localities to adopt an ordinance to enter into collective bargaining. Alexandria was one of the first localities to do so. WDVM-TV 25 HAGERSTOWN Fire rescue in Florida hosts ‘Honor Challenge' to remember fallen firefighters Thirty-three years after two Orange County firefighters died while responding to a building fire, Orange County Fire Rescue Department continues to honor their contributions to the fire service. Engineer Todd Aldridge and Firefighter Mark Benge paid the ultimate sacrifice while responding to a building fire near Lake Buena Vista on February 24, 1989. Between Feb. 7 and March 31, Orange County firefighters will participate in exercises called the "Honor Challenge," which simulates the physically challenging situations Aldridge and Benge faced when they responded to their last alarm. On Thursday at various Orange County stations, crews took part in the 36-minute challenge, including Station 36, where Engineer Aldridge and Firefighter Benge were assigned. WFTV ABC 9 ORLANDO Dee Snider Releases Music Video For 'Stand', Featuring Footage From Documentary About Deadly Great White Concert Fire VIDEO: Twisted Sister vocalist Dee Snider was recently interviewed for "America's Deadliest Concert: The Guest List", a Reelz documentary about the infamous Great White concert fire nearly two decades ago that killed a hundred people and injured hundreds more. Featured on the documentary soundtrack is one of the most heartfelt, moving songs from Dee's latest album, "Leave A Scar", titled "Stand". Today, in honor of those lives lost, Snider and "The Guest List" director/producer David Bellino have unveiled a brand new music video for "Stand", featuring footage from the documentary. Snider says about the "Stand" music video: "While I didn't write 'Stand' for the Station nightclub fire documentary 'America's Deadliest Rock Concert: The Guest List', it is a perfect fit. BLABBERMOUTH A piece of South Dakota history makes its way home VIDEO: A one-of-a-kind restoration project is finally complete. The Canton Volunteer Fire Department spent more than 25 years bringing one of its trucks back to life. A piece of history has made its way home. "History's good for some things (laugh). It's nice to let everybody reminisce how things were and how things have changed," Canton Fire Chief Nate Laubach said. The Canton Volunteer Fire Department started restoring this century-old chemical truck in the 1990s, but the project quickly stalled. AJ's Automotive inherited the restoration about four years ago. Simply locating parts was a challenge. "The truck was torn apart for a long period of time and so we had to find parts that were in different shops it had been in and it just took awhile," AJ's Automotive Body Shop Manager Troy Drewes said.
