Fire guts historic vacant building in downtown Beaumont VIDEO/PHOTOS: Beaumont firefighters spent the night on the scene of a large fire that gutted an empty historic downtown building. The fire began just after 7 p.m. Thursday evening in the Gilbert Building at Pearl and Bowie Streets in downtown. By sunrise bits of sky and daylight could be seen through upper floor windows where the building's roof used to be. Streets immediately around the building remain closed 12 hours after the fire began. At one point there were nearly a dozen fire trucks at the fire and firefighters spent most of the night extinguishing the fire. Twelve hours later three trucks and crews were left dealing with the remnants of the two-alarm blaze. The fire started on the south side of the building and firefighters arrived at the fire within four minutes, Beaumont Fire Chief Earl White told 12News. KBMT-TV ABC/NBC 12 BEAUMONT Apartment under renovation damaged by fire, San Antonio Fire Department says San Antonio fire investigators are trying to figure out the cause of a fire at a boarded up apartment late Thursday night. The fire was called in around 11:40 p.m. at an apartment complex in the 2500 block Westward Drive, not far from both Highway 90 and West Military Drive on the city's far West Side. Firefighters said they arrived to find heavy smoke, but they had to search for a bit to find the apartment with the fire. Once found, they were able to get a quick knock down of the fire, firefighters said. Fire officials say the apartment was likely under renovation since it had no gas or electricity going into the apartment. There were no reported injuries. The cause of the fire is not currently known. A fire investigation team will now work to determine an exact cause. "The Panhandle is full of amazing people who have an innate need to serve their neighbors and help each other. The CERT program is specifically designed to actually identify those individuals and train them with those skills and knowledge," said Max Dunlap, director of OEM. Natural disaster preparedness, basic medical training, and search and rescue training are some of the few skills taught during the academy. KFDA-TV CBS 10 AMARILLO Major Hazmat spill shuts down I-69 inbound in Montgomery County after two big rigs crash Two big rigs crashed leading to a hazmat spill prompting a total closure of Interstate 69 at Roman Forest Boulevard in Montgomery County at 12:20 a.m. Friday morning. Our crew on the scene learned that one of the 18-wheelers' transmission failed and was stopped in the middle of the freeway in an unlit area. The truck was carrying cartons of diesel exhaust fluid. A second 18-wheeler did not see the broken-down truck and slammed into the back of it. That driver had to be cut out of the cab by firefighters, which took about 20 minutes. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition. As the wreckers were separating the heavy trucks, the second trailer caught fire. Thankfully it was quickly put out by the wrecker driver and Department of Public Safety troopers. KIAH-TV CW 39 HOUSTON PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Indiana auto repair shop destroyed by fire; cause under investigation A Clarksville auto shop was destroyed by a fire Thursday afternoon, according to fire officials. Clarksville Fire Chief Brandon Skaggs said crews were called around 2:45 p.m. to Appeleaf Lane about a structure fire. A witness on the scene said the building was an auto repair shop. Skaggs said firefighters arrived in about 5 minutes, and the building was fully engulfed, with flames going through every window and door. There were three Clarksville fire crews and two from New Albany, along with Tri-Township crews to help put out the flames. Skaggs said there wasn't a hydrant near the business, so they had to shuttle water from the local department. Skaggs said the building and everything inside was a total loss, but no injuries were reported. An employee told WLKY that there were three vehicles inside the building, along with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of equipment. WLKY-TV CBS 32 LOUISVILLE Delaware firefighters trying new campaign to attract new volunteers Tom DiCristofaro first started helping the Claymont Fire Company in 1974, and knows just how valuable Delaware's network of fire stations can be when a blaze begins. "Most people wouldn't care what the name on the side is, what color it is, as long as it showed up 30 seconds ago, that's all they really care about." Wilmington is the only Delaware community with a fully paid fire staff, with the rest of the state relying on the 3,400 volunteers helping at the over 60 stations throughout the First State. DiCristofaro serves as President of the Claymont Fire Company and Vice President of the Delaware Volunteer Firefighters Association. "We could use 1,600 more, but the volunteerism is dwindling, and it's affecting all the companies up and down the state." GHOSTBUSTERS NEWS Good Earth recalls 1.2 million lights after multiple fires and 1 death More than 1.2 million Good Earth Rechargeable integrated Lights sold nationwide are being recalled due to multiple fires — one deadly — as the product's battery can overheat and ignite its plastic casing, according to a notice posted Thursday by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. One person died and another was treated for smoke inhalation when the product overheated and caused a fire in their home last year, according to Mount Prospect, Illinois-based Good Earth. The company knows of nine additional reports of lights overheating, including six that resulted in fire and property damage, it said. After investigating the 10 reports of the lights overheating, Good Earth "removed the lights involved in these incidents from sale to the public in January," the company said in a statement to CBS MoneyWatch, citing "an abundance of caution."
