VIDEO: Several San Antonio-area fire crews are fighting the flames of a large brush fire on the city's South Side. The fire broke out Thursday night in the 10500 block of Roosevelt Avenue, south of Loop 410, in a hay field and brush area near a fuel storage location. It's unknown what caused the fire or if there are any injuries. As of around 9:20 p.m., about 25 fire units were on scene, working to fight the flames and contain the fire. By 4:30 a.m., only eight units were on scene. Crews are also working to keep nearby neighborhoods and businesses that border the field safe from the flames. Fire officials say the fire quickly spread over 200 acres, but the winds eventually let up and the humidity helped to suppress the fire. The Bexar County Fire Department has been assisting to help put out the flames.

PHOTOS: A local man is out of the hospital and reported to be recovering from the injuries he received when his house caught fire in the early hours of Thursday morning. The volunteers of the Jasper Fire Department were dispatched to the location on County Road 166, also known as Ryall Acres Lane, just off of Highway 63, shortly before 1:00, when it was reported that the home was on fire. Upon their arrival at the scene, the Jasper firefighters found the rear end of the home completely engulfed in flames and immediately went to work battling the blaze. However, before it was firefighters from the Beech Grove and East End Fire Department had also been called to the scene to assist. What caused the fire is still unknown. Firefighters say the owner of the home Cole South told them that he woke to find the house on fire and had to break out a window to get out.

Wednesday morning, David Cantu was getting ready for his day when he smelled smoke in his neighborhood. Down the block, a neighbor's home was on fire. Without hesitation, Cantu, an 18-year veteran of the Corpus Christi Fire Department, jumped in his truck and drove down the block. When he arrived at the burning home, someone was in the second story window. "He was actually leaning out the window on his phone, and there was smoke coming out," Cantu said. "The motto of the fire department is, ‘always seek an opportunity to help.' When I saw someone in need, it was automatically just get out here and see what we can do to help these guys out." With the assistance of a neighbor's ladder, Cantu was able to rescue the man from the building. He informed Cantu his mother and dog were still in the house.

The efficiency of Sherman's Fire Department was brought up during this year's city council budget discussion. One topic of discussion was whether there were more efficient ways to handle non-emergency calls. Sherman Chief of Police Zachary Flores says "what we know is that people call 911 for a variety of reasons, the simple fact that they called an emergency line doesn't necessarily mean that what they're calling about is an emergency." A common non-emergency call for Sherman Fire is fall and assist. "But it's not actually an emergency situation where someone needs medical attention, so one of the things they're looking at doing is figuring out, is there a cheaper, better, more efficient way to assist those people", says City of Sherman Communication Manager Nate Strauch. The City of Sherman is considering all options.

PHOTOS: After firefighters with the Fort Worth Fire Department battled a house fire early Wednesday morning, they worked for almost 20 minutes trying to revive a large dog suffering from smoke inhalation. "From all of us here at the Fort Worth Fire Department: Feel better soon, Slime," a post on the Fort Worth Fire Department Facebook page stated. "You're a good boy!" According to the Facebook post, Fort Worth firefighters responded to a house fire in the 7300 block of South Ridge Trail. FWFD Engine No. 29 was the first at the scene, and they found the home engulfed in flames. Although all five of the home's occupants made it out uninjured, Slime, the family dog was "in need of immediate medical attention." The crew from Engine 29 handed Slime off to the crew of Engine 39, who were standing by as the Rapid Intervention Team.

Several agencies were heavily engaged with a massive fire that broke out at a tire yard in Montebello Friday morning. The fire was first reported just after 2:15 a.m. on Bluff Road near Maynard Road, prompting a long battle between firefighters and the massive flames. According to Montebello Fire Department, the fire was very stubborn due to the burning rubber and was expected to continue for hours. The property is home to thousands of tires, which makes the flames difficult to extinguish. No injuries were reported as a result of the fire, and investigators were already working to determine a cause.

After wrapping up a 24-hour shift as a firefighter in Toledo, Ohio, this past weekend, Myles Copeland went to New York to suit up for his other job, a player for Toledo Glass City of The Basketball League, for a playoff game against the Jamestown Jackals. But his two worlds collided near the end of the first quarter of Saturday's game when a referee, John Sculli, passed out on the court and became unresponsive. It happened across from Toledo's bench, and instantly, Copeland sprang into action. He checked Sculli's vitals, but didn't feel a pulse or see him breathing, so Copeland began administering CPR until paramedics arrived. "It was kind of instinctual. It surprised me how quick I was able to switch into that mode, especially being in a basketball game," Copeland said during a phone interview with ESPN on Wednesday. "But with being a firefighter, when you're off the job, you're really not off the job. You still got to keep an eye out for the community and what's going on around you."

PHOTOS: Fred Sullivan stood in complete darkness on the fourth floor of the Hotel Vendome, a rookie Boston firefighter waiting for orders as the remnants of a four-alarm fire were being extinguished at the once-elegant building on Commonwealth Avenue and Dartmouth Street. It was the afternoon of June 17, 1972, and Sullivan could hear his experienced colleagues about 25 yards away, talking among themselves, some leaning against a wall. Suddenly, the floor under them collapsed, and they plummeted amid a crush of falling debris. "They had the fire knocked down," recalled Sullivan, who retired in 2009 as a district fire chief. "They had only a little bit of work to do." The nine firefighters who died at the Hotel Vendome a half-century ago Friday remain the largest loss of life in the history of the Boston Fire Department. For the families of the deceased, for former firefighters who knew the fallen, and for new recruits who are shown the site, their sacrifice endures.

A decades-old Avondale mural painted to memorialize firefighters who died in a massive arson fire is getting a facelift. Ald. Carlos Ramirez-Rosa (35th) is teaming up with the city to restore the large Fireman's Memorial Park mural overlooking the busy intersection of Diversey, Milwaukee and Kimball avenues. Originally painted in the mid-'80s after the deadly fire, the mural has deteriorated in recent years from extreme weather, Ramirez-Rosa said. Ramirez-Rosa is using about $50,000 in aldermanic discretionary funds to replace the crumbling mural. The alderman is working with the city's Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events on the new mural, expected to debut this fall, Ramirez-Rosa said. "The three firefighters that lost their lives in Avondale died in response to an arson fire. They were protecting our community, and that mural honors their sacrifice," Ramirez-Rosa said.
