VIDEO: A man who fired on deputies and placed explosive devices on his front porch died after his house caught fire Thursday, the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office said. Deputies arrived at the man's house in the 500 block of Indian Creek Road at about 9:30 a.m. to arrest him on an outstanding aggravated assault warrant, according to Deputy Chief Jennifer Gabbert. The suspect, whose name has not been released by officials, immediately started firing at deputies from multiple locations in his house, Gabbert said. One deputy received minor injuries after apparently being hit by shrapnel, she said. A SWAT team was called to the scene and tried to negotiate with the man and encouraged him to give up but he continued firing at deputies, she said. A fire started in the area of his front porch where he had apparently dropped incendiary devices, Gabbert said. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH A fire that led to the evacuation of five homes on Lazy Lane in the Mauriceville area off of Mesquite Drive, is now contained. Captain Joey Jacobs with The Orange County Sheriff's Department tells 12News it started as a trash fire, that got out of control. The fire spanned 6 to 8 acres. A travel trailer was destroyed by the fire, Jacobs confirmed. Someone lived there, but was not injured. No injuries have been reported. Orange County Emergency Management Coordinator Joel Ardoin tells 12News the Texas Forest Service was on scene assessing the fire. Emergency management flew a drone over the area to help gather information. Responding agencies include Texas Forest Service, Orange County ESD 1, Orange County ESD 3, Orange County ESD 4, Pinehurst Volunteer Fire Department, Vidor Fire Department, Buna Fire Department and the Orange County Sheriff's Office. KBMT-TV ABC/NBC 12 BEAUMONT In light of the Uvalde school massacre, many communities are putting a focus on emergency preparedness. An agreement has been established between a local school district and the Laredo Fire Department to ensure they are ready in the event of a tragedy. On Tuesday, the Laredo City Council approved an agreement between the Laredo Fire Department and Laredo ISD. Which would establish a student-parent reunification process in the event of a school campus emergency evacuation. If an emergency situation were to be activated, Laredo Fire Chief and Emergency Management Coordinator Guillermo Heard says students will be immediately removed from the campus. Under the agreement, Laredo I.S.D. students and staff will be housed at the Sames Auto Arena to reunify with their families. KGNS-TV NBC/ABC 8 LAREDO On Thursday evening Texas A&M forest service responded to a request for assistance in Wichita County on the "River Fire." According to the Texas A&M forest service, the "River Fire" is located just Northwest of Burkburnett. It started on Thursday, June 23 at 80 acres burned with 0 percent contained. An hour later the fire estimated 250 and 45% contained. By Thursday night the fire was 383 acres and 75% contained. Crews continue to work on containing the fire. KEYE-TV CBS 42 AUSTIN A newborn in Texas was safely surrendered to a fire department Wednesday afternoon under the state's Safe Haven law. The Amarillo Fire Department said firefighters were handed a healthy baby who is 6 to 8 weeks old. According to the fire department, the person who surrendered the baby also provided the child's hospital paperwork and vaccination records. The child was taken by Amarillo Medical Services for a checkup and is doing well, officials said. The baby will be placed in the care of an emergency provider. Texas' Safe Haven law, also known as the Baby Moses law, allows a parent to surrender their unharmed newborn baby at a designated location without any punishment. Babies up to 60 days old can be surrendered under this law. In Texas, a parent may take a baby to any hospital, fire station, or emergency medical services (EMS) station in the state. KXII-TV CBS 12 SHERMAN Thirteen East Texas counties have issued burn bans. The Texas Forest Service continues to list East Texas in the moderate range for fire danger. The question is, what are the requirements for issuing a burn ban? And what restrictions are there in a burn ban? During drought and high fire risk, a burn ban can be issued by a county judge or county commissioners court, prohibiting or restricting outdoor burning for public safety. "It defines anything, potentially anything that would be a fire that could get out of control. We try to prohibit any type of permitted fires. To not permit any fires where we might exceed the capabilities of our local resources. We haven't had a lot of fires that have exceeded the resources. We're getting there," said Gregg County Fire Marshal Mark Moore. KTRE-TV ABC 9 LUFKIN |

VIDEO: A standoff has ended after a suspect opened fire at law enforcement and started a fire at a property in northwest Tarrant County, officials say. Just before 9:30 a.m., the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office says deputies arrived at a home in the 500 block of Indian Creek Road to serve a felony warrant. As deputies were moving toward the home, the suspect began firing multiple rounds from multiple sides of the home, officials say. Deputies then moved into a defensive position in effort to negotiate with the suspect, and SWAT was called to the scene. Terry Rosanky told WFAA she saw it all unfold. "It sound like pop, pop, pop," Rosanky said. "They went up and evidently and approached him and he shot at them four or five times and all hell broke loose." Officials say the suspect continued to fire rounds, and appeared to drop incendiary devices on the front porch of the home – sparking a fire that engulfed several vehicles located at the property. WSVN-TV FOX 7 MIAMI VIDEO: Cardi B is playing with fire … literally. On the newest episode of her Facebook television series Cardi Tries, the 29-year-old rap star teamed up with comedian Lilly Singh to receive real-life firefighting training from the City of Monrovia fire department — letting out a couple terrified screams in the process. In an exclusive clip shared with Billboard of the Friday (June 24) episode, Cardi and Singh stand back and watch at first as Monrovia's fire chief Brad lights a controlled fire that springs to life so fast, it takes both ladies by surprise. "Oh snap!" Cardi yells, as the 33-year-old YouTube personality says: "I think my eyebrows came off!" Cardi is then guided by Brad and training captain Harvey while she sprays a small fire with a tank of extinguisher. BILLBOARD VIDEO/PHOTOS: So far this year there have been nearly four dozen drownings on the Great Lakes. 19 of them on Lake Michigan. From their perch at the entrance to the beach, lifeguards span the lake Michigan shoreline, keeping an eye out for trouble. It's something they're trained to do. That training will now be done through the Michigan City Fire Department. "I like putting my feet in the water and like playing in the sand!" said Jazmine Jennings. The Jennings family make the nearly one-hour drive from South Bend to Michigan City frequently to visit the beach. They're just some of the large number of visitors every year to Washington Park Beach... One of the biggest summertime draws to the area. "Our goal is to be a swimmer safe beach. 100%," said Michigan City Mayor Duane Parry (R). Over the last few years, Washington Park Beach has gone from low numbers of Lifeguards to being fully staffed. WSBT-TV CBS/FOX 22 SOUTH BEND VIDEO: A group of hikers from out of town had to be rescued on Camelback Mountain's Echo Canyon trail on Thursday. Firefighters said a large group from a women's retreat began hiking the trail around 7 a.m. with each person only having one small bottle of water. The heat became too much for them around noon so they called rescuers. Crews said the hikers were spread out all over the trail which made the rescue more difficult. First responders rescued a total of eight hikers from the mountain. Crews used a helicopter and a big wheel basket to get five of them off the trail. The remaining three walked down with help from firefighters. Three of the eight rescued, a 50-year-old woman, a 42-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man, were taken to the hospital in stable condition. KTVK 3TV & KPHO CBS 5 PHOENIX (AZ FAMILY) |
