| Church heavily damaged in fire on Houston's southside, fire officials say VIDEO: Parishioners on Houston's southside are figuring out how to move forward after their church burned in an overnight fire. Firefighters said they found heavy fire and smoke coming from the sanctuary of South Union Missionary Baptist Church, which is on Lydia Street near Tierwester Street, just before midnight. Houston Fire Department officials don't yet know what sparked the flames. The building was closed and locked up at the time. No injuries were reported. The pastor told ABC13 that they had a food pantry scheduled for Saturday, but that will probably have to be rescheduled. "We're just going to get together as a group and decide which way we are going to go forward. We're still going to worship because church is not the building, church is the people," Pastor Michael Smith said. "So we'll just pray and seek God's guidance as we move forward." KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON Killeen and Waco firefighters deploy to fight Texas Panhandle wildfires VIDEO: Fire departments in our area have stepped up this week to help the Panhandle take out the largest wildfires in Texas history. The Killeen Fire Department deployed six firefighters and three vehicles to the Panhandle to battle the flames. Killeen Fire Chief James Kubinski says he's been in contact with his teammates up there and received reports of snow in the area. "I was sent pictures of the units that they're using to handle their activities covered in snow, so they did have some snow up there, which is a good thing," said Kubinski. "Some precipitation is good, but it's only short lived. It's not going to cause the fire to go out by any stretch." Kubinski says the snow will slow down the progress of the fire as Killeen firefighters work 12 hour shifts. KWKT-TV FOX 44 WACO Near $400K fire department architectural design, construction management spending increase approved in Port Arthur Plans for two new fire stations in Port Arthur are getting beefed up to better serve the residents in their service areas. Initial architectural design costs for Station 3, serving Port Acres, and Station 2, serving the Westside, were based on early projections for a medium-sized building. Then as officials went through the process of needs and the health and safety of the future, the size changed from 12,800 square feet to 16,152 square feet in size. Marcus Gibbon and Ashton Holiday with Brown Reynolds and Watford Architects gave Port Arthur City Council a status update on the projects this week. "Station 3 was built in 1961 and has had a full life," Gibbon said. The new station will be located on the corner of 61st Street and Ray Avenue. It will feature three bays and sleeping for eight. | VIDEOS: Massive fire rips through historic manor in Massachusetts A massive fire tore through a 23-bedroom historic mansion in Northbridge, Massachusetts. The fire at the Whitin Lasell Manor, which is more than 100 years old, started just after 1 a.m., fire officials said. Several people were living inside the manor that has stood on Hill Street since 1890. According to a Facebook post by Estate of Mind, an artist collective that operates at the home, all of the residents escaped without injury. Northbridge Fire Department Chief David White said firefighters encountered heavy flames on the second and third floor of the manor when crews arrived. "They are always a challenge -- the way they're constructed -- lots of pockets. Took a while to get the fire under control," White said. Officials said the fire appears to have started on the second floor and does not appear suspicious. Already, the hazmat team says, it has made everybody's lives easier. The truck equipped with most — if not all — the bells and whistles carried a price tag of $710,000. But Greeley Fire Apparatus Project Manager Tim Logston said it was well worth the money. "That's actually on the low end of what our vehicles cost, but we chose that truck for more than just financial reasons," Logston said. "It's going to meet the needs of the citizens and that team for 20 years." The truck — equipped with five computer workstations, gas detectors, chlorine kits, chem sets, waste treatment equipment and much more — made its debut in April of last year. Chief Theus is hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony alongside Alachua County Manager Michele Lieberman, Commission Chair Mary C. Alford, and Public Works Director Ramon Gavarrete. The 11,500 square foot building fits 10 beds and three bays. It was built with sustainable features incorporating solar power, a backup generator, and wind-load resistance. The $6.5 million project includes the cost of construction and furnishings inside the station, like gear lockers, beds, and everyday living essentials.Theus says this new station will have a fire engine and rescue moved over from their old station on Southwest 43rd Street. They're also finishing up a brand new water tanker. WCJB-TV ABC/CW+ 20 GAINESVILLE Kentucky high school first in U.S. to offer CPAT to next generation of firefighters Fairdale High School in Fairdale, KY is making waves by training the next cohort of fire fighters and EMTs. During a recent ceremony held at the school, Dan Shirley, an instructor at the school's Fire and EMS Academy, announced the acquisition of the school's new Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) license allowing students to undergo testing before graduation. "The CPAT is crucial for students aspiring to pursue a career in the fire service," said Shirley. "Having the opportunity to prepare for the test from the moment they enter the program until their senior year provides them with a significant advantage."
