Amarillo paramedics and firefighters rescue 16-month-old from house fire VIDEO: 16-month-old child is alive thanks to the bravery of Amarillo firefighters and paramedics. The baby girl was in her crib and stuck in a burning home. It was a lifesaving mission for both the Amarillo Fire Department and Amarillo Medical Specialists when a fire started at a home just after 9 a.m. Thursday. As paramedics arrive on the scene, they saw smoke and flames. A frantic mother told them her little girl was still inside. "They broke out a window, so the paramedic stuck his head in the window to try to find the child and was overcome by smoke," Jeff Justus, Community Liaison for AFD, said. "The whole room was filled with smoke he couldn't find anything." The paramedic could still hear the child. Then AFD arrived. Their crew's main focus was getting the girl to safety. KVII-TV ABC/CW+ 7 AMARILLO Evacuations As Wildfires Continue Raging Near Eastland, 'Eastern Complex' Cluster Only 2% Contained VIDEO: Low humidity and gusty winds continue to fuel wildfires in Texas, burning homes and prompting evacuations. Several wildfires merged to form what fire officials call a "complex" that was burning near Eastland, about 85 miles southwest of Fort Worth. As of Friday morning, the fires had burned about 62.5 square miles (around 40,000 acres), according to Texas A&M Forest Service. It was only 2% contained and fires were burning in thick brush and grass fields. The Texas A&M Forest Service told CBS 11 News that crews are focusing on operations related to life safety and structure protection as well as the construction of fire line. Other smaller fires were burning throughout other areas of Texas, and Thursday's low humidity and high winds created an ideal scenario for the blazes to quickly grow out of control. KTVT-TV CBS 11 FORT WORTH Fire engulfs city of Ranger in separate blaze from sprawling Eastland County grass fire VIDEOS: Crews in a small Texas community are working to put out a fire that engulfed the city Thursday afternoon. Heavy flames filled the city of Ranger's downtown area and engulfed historic structures including the police department building and a 100-year-old church. Video taken by the Eastland County Today newspaper showed crews working to put out the fire at the historic Second Baptist Church and the police station. Ranger is in Eastland County, about 85 miles west of Fort Worth, off of Interstate 20 and Loop 254. According to the city's website, Ranger has a population of 2,468 as of the 2010 census. "A lot of sentimental value here. Lived in Ranger my whole life," fire chief Darrell Fox said. Fox told WFAA the fire may have been started from a barbecue pit and was fueled by high winds in the area. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS St. Patrick's Day ends with car crashes in San Antonio area PHOTO: San Antonio's first responders had a busy St. Patrick's Day as firefighters and police headed to several scenes overnight. The San Antonio Fire Department rescued a male and female in their 30s along with their 5-month-old baby from their vehicle after it was hit by a Sedan turning onto Ingram Road. The collision caused their vehicle to roll over onto a sidewalk around 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 17. According to the San Antonio Police Department, all three were transported to University Hospital in stable condition. The driver of the Sedan reportedly didn't see the vehicle after another car swerved in front of him, according to officials. There were no signs of intoxication. On 1604 at Medina Creek around midnight, the Bexar County Sheriff's Office responded to a vehicle that drove off the highway down into the creek. MYSA.COM Fire damages Denison liquor store Fire broke out Thursday night at a liquor store in Denison. VIDEO: Large fire burns Texas city's police department building, historic church Crews in a small Texas community are working to put out a fire that engulfed the city Thursday afternoon. Fox told WFAA the fire may have been started from a barbecue pit and was fueled by high winds in the area. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS If you change your clock and change your batteries, change your habits For years, the fire prevention messaging was simple and snappy: When you change your clocks for daylight saving time, change the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms. If Congress does away with the biannual clock change, as the Senate this week proposed, that reminder won't be there anymore. Fire protection officials said they're not too worried. "I've got to say that I hadn't thought about it," said Edward Williams Jr., president of the Fire Prevention Association of Massachusetts and a deputy chief in the Brockton Fire Department when asked about the potential implications of the Senate legislation to make daylight saving time permanent. "The good thing right now is we tell people to check them monthly anyway." Many detectors in new homes are sealed, so people cannot borrow their batteries to put in the TV remote or a child's toy, he said. THE BOSTON GLOBE - METERED SITE Tow truck drivers pushing for change in warning lights in Illinois Tow truck driving can be a dangerous job when workers are along the interstate cleaning up the scene of an accident or towing a vehicle away. After the loss of Ross Booker, local tow truck drivers are asking if something can be done to make their jobs easier. Booker was killed by a 16-year-old after a Scott's Law violation in early March. "If you are going down the interstate and you see orange and white lights, that doesn't mean a whole lot to people," said Taylor Feldkamp of Feldkamps Towing. Feldkamp said that working on highways and interstates provides challenges every time they have to do it. That is why he wants to see if drivers can use red and blue lights on their trucks, along with the white and amber they already use. KHQA-TV CBS/ABC 7 HANNIBAL South Carolina county firefighters want an association; group would standardize fire training Calhoun County firefighters are looking to establish a firefighter training association to help standardize fire response protocols across the county. "One of the big things is that you've got every department now doing kind of their own training. There is not a whole lot of uniformity within Calhoun County. It definitely helps if everybody is on the same page with training," Sandy Run Fire District Assistant Fire Chief Christian Wolfe said Monday. "We all train together because we all have to work together," Wolfe said. "That kind of makes everything go a little smoother on a fire scene." Wolfe spoke on the topic at a recent Calhoun County Council meeting. He said the first step is to create a governing body and rules and regulations the body will follow. Organizers hope to create a commission independent of county council. Even so, organizers hope council will appoint members to the commission similar to what is done with the Rural Fire District and Sandy Run Fire District. THE TIMES AND DEMOCRAT Woman's viral TikTok asks for fire department shirts from all 50 states for her father A simple call to action from an Iowa woman has gone viral on social media. Allison Marois made a TikTok in February asking for help for a gift she's working on for her father's birthday in August. Her father, Bill Collins, recently retired after being a firefighter for more than 38 years. "He really is passionate about being a firefighter. That's the one thing that he's loved. If someone was born to do something, my dad was born to be a firefighter," Marois said. "My dad is one of my number one supporters and he — he is really one of the best men in my life and I wouldn't trade him for anything." Marois is creating a T-shirt quilt for her father. Her goal is to collect fire department T-shirts from all 50 states. The response from her TikTok has been overwhelming. KHBS-TV ABC/CW+ 40 FORT SMITH PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
