Bexar County Commissioner fights COVID-19 with help from 3D printers As the COVID-19 outbreak continues to create a shortage of medical supplies, one Bexar County Commissioner is doing what he can to meet the need. Precinct 4 Commissioner Tommy Calvert is responding to requests for personal protective equipment for first responders. He's enlisting the help of local 3D printer owners to assist in creating protective face shields for health care workers. Calvert says a group of 3D printer owners are currently volunteering their time to create 500 face shields per day. But creating the shields requires more than just the printer and this is where you can help. "With schools being closed, we are going to scour the districts to ask for what they could donate from their 3D printers for the personal protective gear of healthcare workers. When it comes to making sure our first responders and medical communities are supplied with the equipment needs, we are now needing the support of the community to literally protect our healthcare first responders." KTSA-AM 550 At least 4 homes damaged in La Feria fire Emergency responders in La Feria and Harlingen rushed to save homes after a fire broke out. The windy and dry conditions made matters worse. It happened near South Solis Road and 4th Street where officials are currently monitoring hotspots. Cameron County Fire Marshal Juan Martinez told CHANNEL 5 NEWS no one was hurt, but at least four homes were damaged. KRGV-TV ABC 5 WESLACO Clay County distillery donates homemade sanitizer to first responders A Clay County distillery is helping first responders by making sanitizer and made its first delivery on Thursday. "There's a shortage everywhere even for us and our suppliers," WFPD Chief Manuel Borrego said. That's why Rocking M Ranch Distillery is donating gallons of sanitizer to first responders in Wichita Falls, Burkburnett, Henrietta and at Sheppard air force base. Before they started making it, the owners weren't sure if they needed to. "We really didn't realize the need that was out there until people started calling and said hey we need to do this," owner Tony Moore said. The federal government gave them the recipe and have loosened licensing restrictions for sanitizer. KAUZ-TV CBS 6 WICHITA FALLS Copperas Cove Fire Department paramedics may use air packs for protection The Copperas Cove Fire Department's paramedics may have to use the department's self-contained breathing apparatus or air packs as protection against COVID-19 if the department runs out of healthcare supplies already in short supply. "These devices provide positive-pressure breathing air for the responder, while at the same time, providing an element of personal protection from the spread of COVID-19," Deputy Fire Chief Gary Young said in a press release Thursday. "In the near future, it will not be unreasonable to see a Paramedic in one of these air packs come to your door if you call 911. Don't be scared, don't worry," he said. The air packs have microphones and speakers that would be used if a paramedic is wearing one. KWTX-TV CBS 10 WACO Fort Worth fire recruits help high-risk shoppers at area grocery stores Fort Worth fire recruits gave back to the community Thursday morning not only with their work but by helping to generate smiles. The recruits bagged groceries, cleaned carts and carried out bags for senior citizens. Albertsons and Tom Thumb reserve the first two hours of the day on Tuesdays and Thursdays for seniors. People with compromised immune systems and pregnant women can also shop during that time. One woman said it was a nice surprise to see the future firefighters. "They are so darling and so sweet. It's a pleasure to see them. They have smiles on their faces and they seem to enjoy... well, at least they enjoyed seeing me because I told them all about the specials," Barbara Weinberg said. The recruits worked at 10 Fort Worth grocery stores Thursday morning. KDFW-TV FOX 4 DALLAS Waco restaurants donate hot meals to local firefighters practicing social distancing Coronavirus is impacting many people, including first responders. Many fire stations in Central Texas are practicing social distancing, and that's placing a strain on firehouses to stay stocked with food and groceries. Firefighters are going out in public less, so they can be ready to respond to emergencies. At Waco Fire Station #8, coronavirus concerns have left firefighters battling a different kind of emergency. "We've done every precaution we can do. We've Lysol'd the stations every day. We make sure we clean every bit of our equipment," said Waco Fire Department Engineer Richie Campbell. First responders are practicing social distancing to prevent the spread of COVID-19. But as crews bunker down, simple tasks like going to the grocery store now seem like a luxury. 18 fire departments in California join forces during coronavirus outbreak To ensure uninterrupted service during the coronavirus pandemic, 18 fire departments in San Bernardino County have joined under a regional management team, an action usually reserved for fighting large wildfires. "COVID-19 has the possibility of affecting a significant portion of the fire and EMS workforce," the San Bernardino County Fire Chiefs Association said Thursday, March 26, in announcing formation of the agencies that will cooperate with the San Bernardino County Fire Protection District Incident Management Team. The team was formed on March 6 "to manage exposed and/or sick members of its agency, to ensure responders have necessary personal protective equipment, and to maintain consistent communication with its cooperators." The 18 fire departments united under the incident management team. SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY SUN Georgia firefighters make face masks to help ease shortage in COVID-19 battle VIDEO: The staff at the Tybee Island Fire Department have been hard at work since Wednesday making masks for those that need them most. The dedicated team is one of several groups working to fill the nationwide mask shortage triggered by frightened Americans concerned about their respiratory health amid the COVID-19 pandemic. "For people that aren't in the medical industry, they don't really need to run out and buy all the N95 masks up, those really need to be for our medical workers, for our hospitals, for our first responders," Capt. Matt Harrell, the fire department's interim fire chief, told WSAV.com NOW. "We're able to get the proper masks we need to run calls, but I know for a lot of people, they're really worried about this, so we just wanted to give them something to give them some kind of respiratory protection during this time," Harrell said. WSAV-TV NBC/CW+ 3 SAVANNAH With 1 in 6 workers under quarantine, New Orleans EMS to run lower-level ambulances With 16% of its workers in self-isolation due to exposure to the coronavirus, New Orleans Emergency Medical Services will run ambulances to situations that are not life-threatening staffed solely with emergency medical technicians and not the more highly trained paramedics who are now required to be on board. The city will also receive an "ambulance surge" from the state to assist with medical services while it grapples with the COVID-19 epidemic, and officials are calling for volunteers to help with staffing, EMS said. At least 94 of the city's 170 EMS workers have been exposed to the virus, authorities said. But because federal Centers for Disease Control guidelines allow medical professionals to keep working until they show symptoms, as long as they wear masks and are monitored for fever and other symptoms, only 28 have been put in isolation at home. NOLA.COM Congress Passes Stimulus Bill: What's In It For Fire Chiefs The Senate approved more than $163 billion designated to assist local fire and EMS departments as part of an economic stimulus package to safeguard the U.S. economy and help the nation respond effectively to the 2019 novel coronavirus and its resulting illness, COVID-19. The House is expected to pass the $2 trillion stimulus bill on Friday. This bill includes multiple funding streams to reimburse fire and EMS departments for the costs of their operations: $100 billion for the Public Health and Social Services Emergency Fund to reimburse eligible healthcare providers for healthcare expenses or lost revenue directly attributable to the coronavirus. Funding could go to public entities; providers enrolled in Medicare and Medicaid, and other for-profit and nonprofit entities that provide diagnoses, testing, or care for individuals with COVID-19. The IAFC will follow up with the HHS Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response to ensure fire departments can apply for these funds. IAFC.ORG New York City's 911 Overwhelmed With Record Number of Emergency Medical Calls Calls to New York City's 911 medical services hit their highest levels since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, according to emergency workers' unions, stretching staffs that have already seen their own ranks thinned by coronavirus infections. Medical emergency calls are up 40% to about 6,500 a day, according to Oren Barzilay, president of Local 2507, a union that represents emergency medical technicians, paramedics, fire inspectors and dispatchers. "Our busiest day of the year, we usually do 5,000 calls. That's usually New Years Day. We have shattered a record last night," Barzilay said, attributing the surge to respiratory cases consistent with Covid-19 symptoms. "Due to the spike, we have some calls that are waiting three, four hours to get an ambulance." Emergency medical service, or EMS, employees expect this record will be shattered many times over in the coming weeks. BLOOMBERG PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
