Houston firefighters seeking wage hike win major court ruling Houston firefighters have scored a game-changing legal victory in the multi-year, pitched battle with Mayor Sylvester Turner. "This is a historic day. This is something firefighters and their families have long waited for," said Marty Lancton, president of the Houston Professional Firefighters Association. A unanimous ruling by the 14th Court of Appeals leaves intact current law which allows a judge to settle wage disputes when the collective bargaining process is locked in a stalemate, as it is with firefighters and the City. If the decision withstands challenge, Houston taxpayers will likely be on the hook for hundreds of millions of dollars worth of back-pay dating to 2017 plus a substantial salary hike for firefighters moving forward. "It's a lot of money firefighters haven't been able to support their families with over the last five years," said Lancton. KRIV-TV FOX 26 HOUSTON Vacant warehouse catches fire in Austin A building caught fire, sending up billows of black smoke off Interstate 35 northbound near U.S. 183 Thursday afternoon. The Austin Fire Department said the vacant warehouse fire happened off Blackson Avenue and the I-35 northbound service road. The area is just north of East St. Johns Avenue approaching north Austin. Austin Fire said the cause for the blaze is unknown right now, but there are no injuries reported. About 120 to 125 firefighters responded to the scene. AFD said roads should open up in the next hour. The building, which is city-owned, was previously an old car dealership, according to the department. City officials were at the building earlier on Thursday to inspect it after a tenant moved out. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Mineral Wells approves hazard mitigation plan; Updates will be made In his newly-appointed role, Mineral Wells Fire Chief Ryan Dunn went over the Hazard Mitigation Plan of Palo Pinto County, which is reevaluated every five years. "The hazard mitigation plan was initially adopted in 2015, we started working on it in 2016, so it's a consecutive thing that we keep doing over and over," Dunn said at Tuesday's city council meeting. "So basically you take all of the natural disasters that can impact this city and this county, and we take into consideration what we can do to prevent them, what we can do to aid them to leave us in better shape — for example, floodwater and a drainage system eliminates that threat. There's some things you can't control, a tornado you can't control." Dunn said some changes need to be made to the 223-page document after council approval. "It says that Mineral Wells had no impacts from any natural disaster event since 2015, which we all know is false because a tornado hit our downtown area," he said. WEATHERFORD DEMOCRAT Smith County sees uptick in emergency management due to pandemic, severe weather, fires Between the pandemic, winter storm, and other emergencies, the Smith County Fire Marshal and Emergency Operations Center has stayed busy this last year. County officials have been meeting with the City of Tyler for more than a year to deal with issues regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. They have had 73 in-person EOC meetings and 327 virtual meetings. Fire Marshal Jay Brooks says things have changed dramatically. "In the first several months especially it was a do-for-yourself kind of event. I mean there was no help from outside. The state couldn't provide us anything and so we were scrambling trying to figure out how we were going to take care of ourselves," Brooks said. Along with the pandemic Smith County had to deal with the winter storm and Brooks credits lots of success to the community stepping up. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER New firefighters learn 'Longview way' during live training Longview Fire Department Training Chief Andy Parker believes it's important that new hires learn "the Longview way," even after they complete the fire academy. As part of that philosophy, the department conducted a live fire exercise Thursday for four new firefighters at the Elderville-Lakeport Volunteer Fire Department training facility. Parker said new Longview firefighters go through three weeks of training after graduating from the fire academy. "We're just trying to fine tune on the way Longview does things," he said. New hires then take part in shift orientation for three months to continue to refine skills "to make sure it becomes muscle memory." Veteran firefighters also must have a certain number of training hours each year, Parker said. "We try to do a live fire training once a year" for veterans, he said, in addition to live exercises for new hires as needed. LONGVIEW NEWS-JOURNAL - METERED SITE Gaslight Restaurant and Bar in Uptown Dallas heavily damaged by fire A popular Uptown Dallas bar and grill caught fire Thursday morning. It's unfortunate for the owners who said they have been trying to bring business back after a tough pandemic year. The fire at the Gaslight on McKinney Avenue started around 8:30 a.m. Dallas Fire-Rescue said by the time firefighters arrived, there was already thick smoke and flames shooting through the room. No one was in the building at the time so firefighters were able to get the flames under control after about 30 minutes. Video shared by FOX 4's Steve Noviello showed the smoldering remains of the heavily damaged building. The bar's co-owner said it opened for business about a month before the pandemic began and had to operate at 50% capacity for almost all of the first year. . Meanwhile, a second fire in Westbury was reported just before 6 p.m. Officers responded to the calls of a house fire on Rockland Street. Officials say all residents in the house had already evacuated. One woman was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported. The I-Team found not only are many police, fire and emergency response agencies grappling with how and whether to urge their members to get vaccinated; many are also operating with an incomplete picture of who has received the shot. The I-Team requested vaccination data from nearly two dozen police and fire departments in D.C., Maryland and Virginia. It found each is tracking the vaccination status of their force differently, if at all. Nearly half of 22 departments said they're not tracking vaccinations, with some citing privacy concerns and noting vaccines are voluntary. WRC-TV NBC 4 WASHINGTON DC West Virginia dive team member talks about finding alleged murder weapon in lake VIDEO: A possible murder weapon has been found at the bottom of a lake nearly a year after the killing. When Williamson firefighter Shane Runyon went through water rescue training, he never imagined he'd use those skills to help with a murder investigation. Williamson Police Department Chief Grady Dotson enlisted the Williamson Fire Department dive team's help after getting a tip that a hammer allegedly used to kill John Jackson in May of last year had been thrown into Laurel Lake. "We did some interrogations and interviews, and the tip came from one of them," Dotson said. James Church, Charles Jarvis, and Terry Jarvis had already been indicted in the case, accused of killing Jackson and burning down the apartment where the crime allegedly happened on Elm Street. The suspects are awaiting trial. "We're very familiar with the lake," Runyon said. "We spend a lot of time diving there, training there." WSAZ-TV NBC 3 HUNTINGTON How a 10 cent wrist band is making North Carolina firefighters more aware of their cancer risk A 10-cent wrist band could help researchers give North Carolina firefighters greater insight into their risks of cancer. Occupational Health and Safety data reveals firefighters are nine percent more likely to get cancer than the general population. Why is part of a study between the Duke Cancer Institute, Duke University, and North Carolina firefighters. As part of News 13's Deadlier than Fire series and documentary, News 13's got a look at the groundbreaking work and why it could have a national impact. "A lot of time firefighters are naturally inquisitive to where they want to get to the deeper answer," explained Durham Firefighter Corey Miller. Miller's curiosity sparked a letter several years ago. "And that partnership has been growing ever since," said Miller. That curiosity has blossomed into a joint effort between Duke University researchers, Duke Cancer Institute, and Durham fire station four, just six miles apart, now collaborating for the first time.
