VIDEO: Fire officials are investigating a house fire that they say took the life of an elderly woman early Friday. This happened just after 2 a.m. at a two-story home in the 13900 block of Honey Bee Court in north Harris County. The Harris County Fire Marshal's Office said several fire crews, including Westfield Fire Department, worked to put out the hot spots. Officials said fire crews arrived at the scene to find heavy flames coming from the first floor of the home. It was reported there was one person trapped inside. Officials said nine people, four adults and five children under the age of 15, were trapped in the home at the time of the fire. The father was able to get everyone out except for their 81-year-old aunt who died in the downstairs bathroom, fire officials said. The father was transported to a local hospital for smoke inhalation. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON Fire crews are working Friday morning to try to contain a wildfire burning in rural San Saba County. According to a 10:40 p.m. Thursday tweet from the Texas A&M Forest Service, the Mayfield Fire has already burned 1,500 acres and is only 20% contained. The service said aviation and additional resources were ordered to assist the fire fight Friday morning with crews working overnight. The fire is in a rural area in the far southwest corner of the county, northeast of Fredonia. According to a post from the Brady Fire/EMS Department, the fire was burning earlier Thursday around 6:30 p.m. just north of Voca in McCulloch County. The Salvation Army Brady Emergency Disaster Services is helping first responders in the area with the fire. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Crockett County Commissioners in Precinct 4 announced the purchase of a new building, previously Fesco, for a Fire and EMS Station on Wednesday, May 11th. According to a post on social media, the building was purchased for $700,000 without any bonds or loans. Located at 105 Medical Dr, these two buildings will supply the department with 13 total bays, which is large enough to house all fire units and ambulances at one location. The precinct also shares there is room to grow in the new space. The new location will also allow the department to move away from the center of town. Crockett County Precinct 4 says that the new facility is comparable to a new building in today's market. A new station would cost the county over $5 million. KLST-TV CBS 8 SAN ANGELO Firefighters managed to put out a structure fire that started under a carport and briefly spread to a neighboring home on Thursday. The call came in around 7 p.m. from the 2500 block of University. Lubbock Fire Rescue says the fire started under the carport and spread into the wall and attic of the home, causing damage to the interior before spreading to the exterior wall of a neighboring home. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire on both structures. A vehicle was also damaged from the heat, but no injuries were reported. Firefighters are currently investigating the cause of the fire. KCBD-TV NBC 11 LUBBOCK Several people are displaced and looking for a new place to stay after a fire damaged their apartment units on the Northwest Side, according to the San Antonio Fire Department. The fire happened just after 6 p.m. Thursday at an apartment complex in the 6900 block of Border Brook, near Timberhill. Officials said the fire drew a heavy response, with at least 37 units called to the scene. Upon further investigation, firefighters said they believe the fire is accidental and could be electrical. In total, three apartment units were damaged -- one by fire and two by smoke. No injuries were reported, but those who were displaced are working with the apartment complex to find other units to stay in, or to see if there are vacancies at its sister property. The fire was extinguished in 20 minutes, though the cause is still under investigation. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Round Rock City Council approved architectural and engineering contracts Thursday, May 12, to move forward with the design of a new Fire Station 1. The station will be located at 1730 E. Old Settlers Blvd. and house one battalion chief and a fire crew comprised of three to four firefighters. The new location will move these personnel from the Central Fire Station located at 203 Commerce Blvd., which will continue to house administration functions for the Round Rock Fire Department. The new location is expected to better distribute response times across the City, with improved response to the growing eastern portion of the community. A previously designed prototype fire station will be used as a blueprint for the project. CITY OF ROUND ROCK |

Two drivers were taken to a hospital after a dump truck crashed into the back of an Ohio Department of Transportation vehicle on a northern Ohio interstate Thursday morning. Before 7:20 a.m., an ODOT worker was headed to pick up a street sweeper from another location and had pulled his truck over on the way when he noticed trash on the side of the highway. He was still inside the cab, when a dump truck veered off, crashing without appearing to slow down. "Here's a guy doing his job…going above and beyond you know," said District 4 Deputy Gery Noirot during a Thursday afternoon news conference. "Behind me is the result of that accident…" he said, gesturing to a burned-out vehicle. The force pushed the burning trucks down an embankment near Green's Graybill Road, in the northbound lanes, as other drivers pulled over to help. WBNS-TV CBS 10 COLUMBUS PHOTOS: I admit that I didn't remember, but my friend Lois Seymour did, that it was the 30th anniversary of a monstrous fire that broke out on May 3, 1991, at Madison's Central Storage & Warehouse Co.. It was later proclaimed to have been Madison's biggest fire ever by fire department officials. The fire at the huge food storage facility on Cottage Grove Road and Highway 51/151 in east Madison was later attributed to a forklift battery malfunction. The resulting blaze at the sprawling 500,000 square foot site took more than a week to extinguish because of burning insulation and some 20 million pounds of what we referred to as "government butter, cheese and meat". Madison Fire Department Chief Steven Davis had been with Madison Fire Department for just a couple years. WISCONSIN STATE FARMER The toughest two minutes in sports will be hosted in Martin County this weekend. The Firefighter Combat Challenge is a grueling course that requires strength and endurance and showcases skills that firefighters use every day. The free-to-attend contest will be held Saturday and Sunday at Stuart Beach and is a regional qualifying event for the national competition scheduled to take place in Fort Pierce in September. Both Treasure Coast competitions are the only ones in Florida this year. The number one team in the world from Ukraine will be competing this weekend. The Treasure Coast Sports Commission was able to setup their arrival after the two-man crew took a train to Poland and then flew to Turkey and then to Florida. Both men said they had to take a break from training to help save people during the war, but now are in Martin County ready to represent their home country. WFLX-TV FOX 29 PALM BEACH Birmingham Stallions linebacker Scooby Wright III has been one of the breakout stars of the inaugural United States Football League season. Through four games, the Stallions are undefeated. Wright has recorded 32 tackles, two sacks, two forced fumbles and two passes defended to help Birmingham. Wright was the Stallions' first selection in the inside linebackers portion of the USFL Draft in February. He told Fox News Digital in a recent interview he graduated from a firefighting academy in California and was volunteering before he decided to put the pads and helmet on again. He had been two years removed from a short stint with the XFL, which ended due to the coronavirus pandemic. "After the XFL ended in 2020 in the pandemic, I went home to Northern California and I started taking firefighting prerequisite classes for the firefighting academy," Wright said. FOX NEWS |
