VIDEO: Multiple cars caught fire Thursday at a recycling yard in southwest Houston. The fire caused a huge plume of smoke that could be seen from miles across the Houston area. This happened at the Holmes Road Recycling Company on Homles Road near Highway 288. Houston Fire Department Chief Bryan Sky-Eagle said while an employee was cutting up cars, something exploded, causing a massive fire to ignite. Arson investigators are working to determine what material was inside the car that caused the explosion. HFD said there were no air quality issues that impacted nearby communities. There were also no injuries reported. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON The Dalhart Volunteer Fire Department released details on Wednesday regarding funeral arrangements for two department members who were killed in a Tuesday evening wreck, as well as information on a "Celebration of Life Day" established by Dallam and Hartley Counties. Dalhart Fire Chief Curtis Brown and Firefighter Brendan Torres were killed on Tuesday evening on US 54, northeast of Dalhart, during a head-on crash involving a truck tractor towing a semi-trailer. As detailed in previous reports, DPS said that the truck tractor appeared to have crashed into a fire department vehicle while trying to pass an unknown vehicle. On Wednesday, Dalhart officials announced that funeral services for Brown and Torres will be hosted at 2 p.m. on Monday in the Rita Blanca Coliseum in Dalhart. KAMC-TV ABC 28 LUBBOCK Lewisville City Council approved plans for a temporary police and fire administration facility during its Oct. 3 meeting. The city's police and fire departments will need to relocate to make way for demolition of the police department building, located at 1187 W. Main St., and the Central Fire Station, located at 188 N. Valley Parkway. Operations for both departments will move to 1955 Lakeway Drive, Ste. 220, as construction continues for the new public safety center, according to the agenda item. The existing suite will be renovated to meet the service needs of the police department as well as fire administration. Public safety staff will be relocated in two phases. The fire department will move into their temporary offices in early January. The police department will relocate after final completion of the temporary facility, which is scheduled for late February. COMMUNITY IMPACT NEWSPAPER Alcohol-based hand sanitizer may have been a contributing factor to a 3-alarm fire that engulfed a large commercial building in Fort Worth Thursday night, officials say. At approximately 10:30 p.m. Oct. 6, the Fort Worth Fire Department received multiple calls over a fire that made its way into the building located in the 2300 Block of Cullen Street. When fire crews arrived, they saw heavy fire both on the outside and inside of the building and decided to attack it defensively--from the outside of the building. Officials say around 20 firetrucks and 85 firefighters worked the scene, and that crews would rotate until "the incident is deemed safe." The cause of the fire is unknown at this time but initial reports suggest alcohol-based hand sanitizer may have been a contributing factor, officials say. KTVT-TV CBS 11 FORT WORTH Dallas Fire Rescue has received a donation of mattresses to help firefighters rest between calls. BT Furnishings has four stores in North Texas and donated 86 mattresses to Dallas Fire Rescue Wednesday. "Our purpose is everything," says BT Furnishing's Macee Boyer. "It's important we're giving back in a meaningful way." Boyer says the company's owner aims to give 10,000 mattresses to organizations that need help over the next ten years. She says several people who work for the company saw social media posts about firefighters dealing with uncomfortable mattresses. "Just knowing we're giving back to them for everything they do for us every day," she says. "They risk their lives day in and day out." "To have a brand new mattress to contribute to the comfort needed when you're trying to lay down and get a good night's sleep means a lot to us," says Dallas Fire Rescue's Jason Evans. KRLD-AM 1080 DALLAS PHOTOS: An orange glow filled the north Abilene sky Thursday evening from a large fire that broke out in the shuttered St. Ann Hospital at 1350 Cypress St. Several fire crews were on the scene, taking a defensive posture to contain the blaze to the lot. Firefighters on a ladder truck's extended ladder were directing water from above the two-story building that was engulfed in flames. From the surrounding blocks of the fire, flames could be seen above the trees. The fire started at a different property and spread to the old hospital at about 7 p.m. Thursday, according to a Facebook post from Habitat for Humanity Abilene, which was gifted the property about a month ago. "As far as we know no one was injured," the 10:40 p.m. Thursday post stated. St. Ann Hospital was founded in 1940 by Sisters of the Divine Providence. ABILENE REPORTER NEWS - METERED SITE |

Crews say 80 people will be displaced after huge apartment fire broke out in north Phoenix on Thursday evening. The flames broke out around 7 p.m. at a complex near Cave Creek Road and Cinnabar Avenue, north of Dunlap Avenue. One man had minor burns, firefighters said. Residents will be taken to temporary housing, but it's still unknown what sparked the fire. "It was a massive event for us out here in north Phoenix. We still do have crews actively fighting this blaze. It started in a single-story apartment complex and did spread to a two-story apartment complex next to it," said Phoenix Fire Capt. Evan Gammage. He said crews were able to stop the fire at the two-story complex, but it still sustained heavy damage. However, the single-story was deemed a complete loss. KTVK-TV 3 & KPHO-TV CBS 5 PHOENIX (AZ FAMILY) VIDEO: The Holyoke Fire Department is working to restore a piece of the city's history. "Firefighting is steeped in history and tradition and this is our, if you will, this is our connection to our forefathers that were here before us, that build the Holyoke Fire Department to what is today," said Holyoke Fire Capt. David Rex. If you've attended the Holyoke Saint Patrick's Day Parade or the tree lighting ceremony at city hall, then you may have noticed a vintage fire engine driving down city streets. Now, plans are underway to refurbish the 1930's Mack truck to its original condition. Rex told Western Mass News that, to him, the old fire truck symbolizes simpler times. "It was back in the day when the guys would hang in the sides and rise of the streets with the dalmatians," Rex added. WGGB-TV ABC 26 SPRINGFIELD "Time-restricted" eating is a popular way to lose weight, and a new study suggests it can offer shift-workers a way to eat more healthfully. Time-restricted eating is a form of intermittent fasting, where people limit themselves to eating within a certain time window each day. Outside of that window, they swear off everything other than calorie-free drinks. Time restriction has become a popular weight-loss strategy, largely because it's simple. Instead of counting calories, people only have to watch the clock. And small studies have shown that narrow eating windows — six hours being a popular one — can help people shed some pounds. There is also some evidence of benefits other than weight loss, according to Dr. Pam Taub, a cardiologist and professor at the University of San Diego School of Medicine. US NEWS Florida officials said firefighters working in Hurricane Ian damage zones are encountering a new problem that is proving challenging - electric vehicle fires from corroded batteries. Florida's Chief Financial Officer & State Fire Marshal Jimmy Patronis took to social media Thursday to show the response by North Collier Fire Rescue to an EV that caught fire in the middle of a busy roadway. "There's a ton of EVs disabled from Ian. As those batteries corrode, fires start. That's a new challenge that our firefighters haven't faced before. At least on this kind of scale," Patronis said. First responders did not report any injuries associated with the incident but said these fires can be difficult to extinguish. An official on scene can be heard saying in a video, "So, we've already put on 1,500 gallons of water on this, and it is still going. This shows how dangerous these fires are." FOX WEATHER For former running back Antonio Pittman, it's not the gridiron fueling his game anymore. He's traded in that sport for a spot with the Columbus Division of Fire. "It's a really, really, great job. I mean that from the bottom of my heart," Pittman said. ABC6/FOX 28 first spoke with Pittman about being a Columbus firefighter back in 2020, when he first started. Since then, he says he's achieved some of the goals he set out to do. "I've accomplished a lot, " Pittman said. Pittman's all about giving back and helping kids get on the right path. He says opportunities can change someone's life. So he and his girlfriend started a charity to help students. "We created Navigating Alternative Success which is named after one of her students who was tragically killed in 2019. With that we've created after school programs, tutoring, we provide resources, help them write letters for their college applications," Pittman said. WSYX-TV FOX 28 COLUMBUS |
