Corpus Christi: New firetruck unveiled in memory of first responder VIDEO: The Corpus Christi International Airport has beefed up its firefighting capabilities. On Thursday, a new aircraft rescue fire fighting truck was unveiled. But the ceremony was about more than just that. The truck is in memory of Lieutenant Bobby Almager, a law enforcement, firefighter and EMT who died from COVID-19 complications in July 2020. Almager's wife, Terry, attended Thursday's ceremony. "Words can't even be put into place of what they've done for him," said Terry Almager. "I mean it's a proud moment, and proud isn't even a word I can say. But it's really an honor that they're dedicating this firetruck to my husband." She said Bobby had a passion for art. In fact, he created the logo on the truck himself. "It's just heartwarming ya know," said Terry. KRIS-TV NBC 6 CORPUS CHRISTI Kilgore police say large industrial fire contained, barricades being removed Kilgore police say the large industrial fire near Industrial Boulevard and Woodlawn Street has been contained. On Friday morning, police reported most roadways had been reopened, except a small portion of Industrial Blvd. between Watson Road and Woodlawn. As of 9:36 a.m., city crews were preparing to move barricades blocking Industrial Blvd. "The fire at Kilgore Recycling is continuing to burn," police said. "But the smoke plume is much lower." The fire prompted evacuations on Thursday night in the western part of Kilgore. Residents were also asked to stay inside due to effects on the air quality. "Due to a large industrial fire near Industrial Blvd & Woodlawn St, residents in the southern portion of town, south of Harris St, should shelter in place, close windows/doors, overnight," police said. "The wind is expected to decrease and smoke to begin settling to the ground after 8:00 pm" KLTV ABC 7 TYLER Related with Photo: Vast Kilgore fire causes widespread smoke; prompts police to ask some residents to shelter in place Alleged arsonist sets 3 separate fires inside apartment building on Houston's southside Someone intentionally set three separate fires in an apartment complex on Houston's southside overnight, according to fire officials. Firefighters responded to the Haven At Main apartments on Main Street near Old Spanish Trail, just across from NRG Stadium, around 3 a.m. Friday. According to Houston fire officials, when firefighters arrived, they found three small fires in the building: a burning wreath on a door, a car on fire on the eighth floor of the parking garage and a fire in a stairwell. Video from the scene shows the burned wreath and a lot of water damage in the building. A pickup truck with a shattered windshield and a charred roof was towed away. Investigators believe someone set the fires intentionally. "We extinguished each fire easily, with the help of the sprinkler system," District Chief Greg Leonard with HFD said. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON Update: Firefighters Injured in Dallas Apartment Explosion Reunited at Inpatient Rehabilitation Two firefighters who were injured in an apartment explosion in Dallas last month were reunited on Wednesday. Captain Chris Gadomski and Driver Engineer Ron Hall are continuing their recovery after the explosion that injured eight people on Sept. 29. Firefighters responded to the Highland Hills Apartments after learning that a man had fired a gun into a vacant apartment and severed a gas line connected to an oven, causing a gas leak. As firefighters searched the community, an explosion partially collapsed one apartment building, damaged another, and injured four residents and four firefighters. Three of the firefighters were critically injured in the blast while the fourth, Officer Andrew Curtis, suffered only minor injuries. Officer Pauline Perez was discharged earlier this month after spending more than two weeks in the hospital's burn unit. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH Nueces County fire departments get new trucks to help combat brush fires With cooler weather circulating around the Coastal Bend the possibility of drier brush has firefighters on high alert. Rain over the past few months has helped to produce tall grasses that are now turning brown. Additionally, low humidity and high winds are a perfect recipe for a potential grass fire. One local fire department is receiving two brand new brush trucks which might come in handy for the changing weather. Nueces County Emergency Service Department #1 Captain Christopher Glass said the trucks provide advantages that come in handy for his line of work. "They can get you much further in a fire and get into areas we can't previously go with our dually Dodge. Getting into the head of the fire is the biggest thing," Glass said. KIII-TV ABC 3 CORPUS CHRISTI 'Is that you Captain Bloxom?': Media investigates El Paso Fire Department's most haunted station Station 9 has been known as the most haunted station in the El Paso Fire Department for years. The crews believe an old captain is still lurking around and looking over the station. This EPFD station off Dallas Street was built back in 1925. Battalion Chief Cristopher Hoggard, who is also the EPFD's historian, explained working or even volunteering for the fire department back then was a matter of great pride. Lieutenant Peter Liechti and firefighter Bobby Martinez have been stationed at "9" for over 5 years. In this period of time they had so many strange occurrences at the station that it became hard to keep track. "The strainer falls into the sink, I suppose gravity could do that, right? But there is no draft, the doors are closed," said Lieutenant Liechti. KTSM-TV NBC 9 EL PASO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Massive blaze tears through vehicle service center in New Jersey VIDEO: AIR11 was over the scene as massive flames engulfed a car service center in Linden, New Jersey early Friday morning. The three-alarm blaze ripped through the Reydel Volkswagen service center on East Elizabeth Avenue, at the corner of Lincoln Street. Large flames were shooting from the roof and thick, heavy smoke could be seen billowing from the building. Firefighters were on the scene around 7:20 a.m., working to put out the flames from different angles. The cause of the fire was not immediately known. The blaze burned right next to a self-storage facility, but there was no word on if it had spread beyond the vehicle service center. WPIX-TV CW 11 NEW YORK Related with Videos: Firefighters Battle Massive Blaze At Volkswagen Dealership The best-paying cities for first responders Between the COVID-19 pandemic, more intense hurricanes, and ongoing wildfires impacting the western U.S., first responders are being challenged more than ever. While first responders are on the front lines during emergencies and face more danger than most people do in their occupations, they don't earn much more. According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, these workers earn an average annual wage of $60,292, or about $4,000 more than the average across all occupations. First responders generally include emergency medical technicians (EMTs), paramedics, firefighters, and police officers. Among these occupations, police officers earn the most, on average, with an average annual wage of $70,000. Firefighters earn $56,360 per year, on average, while EMTs and paramedics earn just $40,370 annually. STATESVILLE RECORD & LANDMARK Hall of Terror: Florida fire department hosts annual Halloween scare PHOTOS: Prepare to be scared. Take a walk past the "human sacrifice" and into the "Chop Shop," while the strobe lights, fog and eerie music add to the creepy mood. These are just two of the chilling attractions at the Palm Coast Fire Department's 20th annual Hall of Terror, and because it's free, you can go through as many times as you dare. Fire Department Lt. Dan Driscoll is the brains behind the show, and this is his eighth year working on the Hall of Terror. He said this weekend's event is a kind of compilation of previous years and includes some enhanced sound and visual effects. The setup at Fire Station 21 takes about a week, he said, but the planning takes a lot longer. "I start flushing out an idea in the spring, early summer, so I start making some lists," he said. THE DAYTONA BEACH NEWS-JOURNAL George Strait's New Music Video Is A Powerful Tribute To First Responders And Their Families George Strait is tipping his hat to first responders in his latest music video. The country music legend premiered "Weight of the Badge" on Thursday (October 28), marking National First Responders Day. It focuses on first responders — police, fire and others — and their families, sharing their personal stories throughout the video. Each one gives their firsthand account of what the weight of the badge means to them, including a sobering message from one of the officers at the start of Strait's music video: "You have people that are going out and doing a job to defend their communities, and you know in the back of the mind of every one of those officers, one of them might not be going home. And we have seen — I've seen it, throughout my career, I have seen it here locally — where a police officer didn't go home." WRWD-FM 107.3 HIGHLAND New technology designed to improve investigations for Missouri fire department VIDEO: New technology will change how the Springfield Fire Department completes its investigations. It's called Matterport, and it was donated to the fire department a little less than a year ago. The technology allows fire marshals to go back into a scene through 3D renderings and virtual reality. Matterport consists of a camera that swivels 360 degrees, taking photos to turn into those 3D renderings of a house. These 3D images allow firefighters to look back at the scene at any time throughout their investigation, no matter how long ago it may have been. Springfield Fire Marshal Mark Phillips says it takes about 30-45 minutes to fully photograph the entire scene. "With this, we do one scan and it covers the floor to the ceiling. So if we miss something, we can always go back through our rendering of this," Phillips says. Phillips says it's used for the more severe fires. KYTV NBC 3 SPRINGFIELD PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
