VIDEO: Cause of massive fire at California pallet yard under investigation The cause of a massive fire at a Modesto pallet yard is under investigation, the Modesto Fire Department said on Saturday. The blaze brought crews from across Stanislaus and San Joaquin counties Friday evening to get control of the fire burning in an industrial area of the city. "Every alarm we had responded," said Battalion Chief Jim Black. "It was a major fire for us." Black said the fire spread from the pallets to nearby power poles, tractor trailers and nearby businesses. The fire burned 200,000 wooden pallets and caused $1.2 million in damage. "We had to stop the trains from coming because we had to lay hose across the train tracks," Black said. Limited access into the area and burning electrical lines brought additional obstacles to fire crews. KCRA-TV NBC 3 SACRAMENTO Fire company in Pennsylvania devastated by tropical storm Debby VIDEO: Cleanup is underway at the Trout Run Volunteer Fire Company after their home base suffered a devastating loss as a result of tropical storm Debby. "This is a tributary to Lycoming Creek, and this came through and undercut the fire hall and the entire embankment and collapsed the road," said Peter Swift, Camp Director at Camp Susque. The water ripped through Route 14 in front of the fire company. "Not a small or easy thing to fix," said Swift. The Trout Run Volunteer Fire Company suffered so much damage during the flood that half of the building is now condemned. "We went across the bridge, and at that point, things started going south. The water started jamming up the logs and propane tanks. I mean, it just kept coming, then the bridge finally went," said Trout Run Fire Chief Nick Smith. WNEP-TV ABC 16 SCRANTON One North Carolina fire department is using drones to set a new standard in ocean rescue technology VIDEO: Last month, two young paddleboarders found themselves stranded in the ocean, pushed 2,000 feet from the shore by strong winds and currents. Thanks to the deployment of a drone, rescuers kept an eye on them the whole time and safely brought them aboard a rescue boat within minutes. In North Carolina, the Oak Island Fire Department is one of a few in the country using drone technology for ocean rescues. Firefighter-turned-drone pilot Sean Barry explained the drone's capabilities as it was demonstrated on a windy day. "This drone is capable of flying in all types of weather and environments," Barry said. Equipped with a camera that can switch between modes — including infrared to spot people in distress — responders can communicate instructions through a speaker. It also has the ability to carry life-preserving equipment. CBS NEWS CDC releases list of top 10 causes of death in the U.S. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released the biggest causes of mortality in 2023. The report, published by the agency on Aug. 8, was based on death records from the National Vital Statistics System. A total of 3,090,582 deaths occurred in the U.S. in 2023, a decline of 6.1% compared to 2022, the report stated. "The overall death rate is decreasing," Dr. Marc Siegel, senior medical analyst for Fox News and clinical professor of medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center, told Fox News Digital. "The key change is decreased deaths from COVID as the population builds up more immunity." COVID was the fourth leading cause of mortality in 2022, linked to 245,614 deaths. It plummeted to the 10th cause in 2023, with 76,446 deaths. Death rates were highest among the elderly, males and Black people, Siegel noted. FOX NEWS PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
