VIDEO: A firefighter was hospitalized after suffering burns during a fire in southeast Houston, according to HFD Chief Samuel Pena. The fire started around 10:30 a.m. Saturday at an apartment complex on Telephone Road just north of Hobby Airport. Officials haven't said what caused the fire but said a firefighter suffered burn injuries while fighting it. The firefighter was taken to the hospital and is currently stable. "The firefighter is in pain, but in stable condition," Pena tweeted. "Tough, tough individual! Prayers for a full and speedy recovery." According to the Houston Professional Fire Fighters Association, the firefighter suffered possible second and third-degree burns after falling through the roof. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON VIDEO: As if firefighters needed any reminders, putting out flames isn't the only part of their job that's dangerous. So is responding to accidents on North Texas highways and streets. In Fort Worth Friday morning, a vehicle slammed into the back of a reserve fire truck as firefighters responded to a crash. While firefighters weren't hurt, the truck sustained significant damage. "One of the scariest things to me about our job is actually being on the highways and with the winter storms we've had here recently, it just amplifies that. I would say it's actually more dangerous than fighting a fire just for the fact of we're on the roads a lot more than we are in these homes that are on fire these days." In Dallas this week, a similar story. Dallas Fire Rescue spokesman Jason Evans said three trucks, including Truck 39, which is just six months old, had to be pulled from service after being damaged as firefighters were responding to accidents on icy roads. KTVT-TV CBS 11 FORT WORTH A 92-year-old woman has died at the hospital after a house fire in South Austin Saturday, says the Austin Fire Department. Austin fire and EMS crews responded to the fire on Parkdale Place, off Clawson Road, where fire crews rescued one person from the home. AFD says crews made an "aggressive interior search under difficult conditions" to find her and get her out. Medics transported the woman with critical life-threatening injuries to St. David's South Austin Medical Center where AFD says she was pronounced dead. ATCEMS says its medics transported another adult to St. David's South Austin Medical Center with non-life-threatening medical complaints and another person refused transport on scene. However, those two were not directly related to the fire. KTBC FOX 7 AUSTIN A small fire at George Bush Intercontinental Airport caused delays for 23 incoming United Airline flights Sunday morning. The airline issued a ground stop between 5:30 a.m. until 7 a.m., impacting passengers who were scheduled to arrive during that time. Passenger Melissa Gomez found out at the very last minute that her flight from Midland to Houston would be delayed. "They delayed us a little longer. I did not know what gate we were going to because they changed it twice in mid-flight. It was a mess," Gomez said. "When you go away from home, you're ready to see your family. So yeah, it was an inconvenience to me." The Houston Fire Department said crews received a call at about 4 a.m. of smoke coming from the first floor of the men's locker room in Terminal C. As a result, United Airlines evacuated employees and customers. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON One man in Sherman was sent to the hospital after their hotel room caught fire. Saturday around 4:30 a.m. both Sherman Police and Fire responded to the Quality Suites in regards to a structure fire. Sherman Fire Chief Billy Bob Hartsfield tells News 12 that from the preliminary investigation, the occupant in Room 112 seems to be the culprit. A Quality Suites employee said two men were in the room at the time. But only one occupant was taken to the local hospital with burn injuries. Hartsfield said the couch in the hotel room initially caught fire, spreading to the rest of the room. Sherman Fire says while just Room 112 sustained fire damage, several rooms sustained water damage from the sprinklers. KXII-TV CBS/MYNETWORKTV/FOX 12 SHERMAN PHOTOS: A person had to be treated for smoke inhalation and taken to a hospital following a house fire in Jasper Saturday. The Beech Grove Volunteer Fire Department responded to a call to help the Jasper Texas Volunteer Fire Department and East End Volunteer Fire Department with a house fire shortly after 7:30 p.m. The house was an "older wood-framed house with multiple wood ceilings and multiple shingle roofs," according to a Beech Grove VFD release. When emergency crews got to the scene, they saw heavy flames coming from all sides and through the roof of the house. The fire was controlled in about an hour. A person who was inside the house was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene and later taken to Christus Jasper Memorial Hospital for further evaluation. KBMT-TV ABC/NBC 12 BEAUMONT |

As federal investigators worked to find out why a 150-car train derailed in northeastern Ohio, the state's governor warned late Sunday that unstable temperatures in a car transporting chemicals could lead to an explosion. The area most at risk of being affected by the Friday crash, that within a 1-mile radius of the crash in the village of East Palestine, was evacuated by early Saturday and remained off-limits, officials said. But Gov. Mike DeWine's office said an estimated 500 residents remained behind in the 1-mile zone. It said they were subject to an "urgent warning" to evacuate. "Within the last two hours, a drastic temperature change has taken place in a rail car, and there is now the potential of a catastrophic tanker failure which could cause an explosion with the potential of deadly shrapnel traveling up to a mile," the governor's office said in a statement. NBC NEWS Low wages, a lack of work-life balance and burnout are among factors driving emergency medical services personnel around the country to quit ambulance duty. Last year, the turnover rate for full-time emergency medical technicians, known as EMTs, was 36% and for full-time paramedics, it was 27%, according to an American Ambulance Association survey. The turnover rate includes both resignations and firings, but nearly all of the EMTs and paramedics who left did so voluntarily. More than one-third of new hires don't last through their first year, the survey found. A federal study projected a need for 40,000 more full-time emergency medical personnel from 2016 to 2030. "The public doesn't see where there's no one in the station, and volunteer services are trying to muster a crew," said Dia Gainor, executive director of the National Association of State EMS Officials and former director of the Idaho EMS office for 19 years. THE PEW CHARITABLE TRUSTS Sabrail Davenport's heart ached when she learned a judge dismissed charges against a former village building department official resulting from the investigation into the fire in which her firefighter son died. Davenport fears no one will be held responsible for the deaths of her son Jared Lloyd, 35, and adult home resident Oliver Huested, 79. So far, Wayne Ballard's dismissals fold in with charges earlier being dropped against two adult home workers charged in the investigation of the March 22, 2021, inferno at the Evergreen Court Home for Adults on Lafayette Street. Two remaining cases related to the Evergreen Court investigation include charges against former inspector Ray Canario and Rabbi Nathaniel Sommer and his son Aaron, who faces felony counts including manslaughter related to causing the fire and deaths. They've pleaded not guilty, and their next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 14. THE JOURNAL NEWS - METERED SITE A fire department in one of our hometowns caught word that bullying was happening in the community and they decided they were going to do something about it. They surprised one teen by eating lunch with him trying to show him he was not alone. "When Dawn Roberts adopted her son Jackson from China, she didn't know he had autism. "I mean it's difficult, but I wouldn't change. He's taught me a lot about myself. And he's fantastic, he's hilarious," said Roberts. One of the challenges they face is other kids at school bullying her son. "He had somebody ask him on the bus, what does dog taste like?" explained Roberts. Roberts says Jackson struggles to interact with others. "I know he eats alone, it bothers me, it makes me sad," added Roberts. But when the Bedford Fire Department heard about Jackson. They contacted the family and Liberty High School to surprise him by joining him for lunch. WDBJ-TV CBS 7 ROANOKE |
