Police are on the lookout for a suspect driving a silver Toyota who fired multiple rounds at three San Antonio Fire Department personnel. Two of them suffered gunshot wounds. The incident happened at the 2500 block of Bandera Road at around 2 a.m. According to officials, officers from West Patrol were dispatched for shots heard. Officers arrived at the crime scene and the San Antonio Fire Department relocated to the fire station. Moments later, officers learned that a silver Toyota drove by the fire station and fired multiple rounds in the direction of three San Antonio Fire Department personnel. One of the SAFD personnel sustained a laceration on the left side of his head and another SAFD staff had a minor laceration on the arm when taking cover. Police did not locate the suspect vehicle. KFDM-TV CBS/CW+/FOX 6 BEAUMONT VIDEO: Firefighters from across Central Texas came together for the Downsville fire chief's final ride. Chief Kelvin Toliver with the Downsville Volunteer Fire Department passed away from stomach cancer at the age of 49 on Feb. 15, 2023. Crews from Robinson, Lorena, McGregor, Beverly Hills and about half a dozen other area fire departments all showed up to pay their respects. "It's awesome to see the support that they have shown to our family, Kelvin Toliver's family," Kelvin's sister Shelia Holmes said. "It lets us know how much they loved him." Toliver's casket traveled from Reflections by Serenity to Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church on a Downsville Volunteer Fire Department fire engine. The procession that included the fire truck with Toliver's casket and other fire crews all traveled down Highway 6. KWTX-TV CBS 10 WACO One of the owners of the three dogs has been arrested Friday night after one man died and three others were injured. Three dogs were involved in a vicious and deadly attack on an elderly couple and were to be euthanized by Animal Care Services Friday night. 81-year-old Ramon Najeras died and an elderly woman is in critical condition at University Hospital after a brutal dog attack that happened Friday afternoon. According to authorities on the scene, the incident happened around 1:40 p.m. near the 2800 block of Depla Street on San Antonio's West Side. The San Antonio Fire Department Chief Charles Hood shared that the couple was visiting a relative's home when they were stepping out of their vehicle when the dogs attacked. A crew of firefighters was able to make it to the scene when the attack was happening. WOAI-TV NBC/CW 4 SAN ANTONIO A group of first responders volunteered their time to teach the public how to save lives. Firefighters and medics with the Austin Fire Department (AFD) and Austin-Travis County EMS (ATCEMS) hosted a "Stop The Bleed" course on Feb. 26 at Laché Movement Co. in Austin. This class allowed first responders to teach the public techniques to help prevent people from bleeding out after they have been shot or wounded. Officials reported it takes between three to five minutes for someone to bleed out, and seven to 10 minutes before an EMS team can get to you after receiving the 911 call. "EMS is always going to have the call and be on the way if someone's made that phone call. But, in the meantime, that's ultimately going to be what saves that person's life is that bleeding control before we can even get there," said Courtney Meyer with ATCEMS. KVUE-TV ABC 24 AUSTIN There was a different kind of dog training in Deep East Texas Saturday. We're talking about search and rescue dogs. They're an extremely valuable tool to have when a person goes missing or is being sought by law enforcement, but even they need to sharpen their skills every now and then. Four search canines with Hudson's Regional Emergency Response Team strengthened their search and rescue skills with volunteers today. Volunteers were taken out into the woods of SFA's experimental forest and placed, before the dogs and their handlers went on the hunt to find them. The president and team coordinator for the search and rescue team, Mike Stephens, said the dogs are one tool in their toolbox needed to find missing or lost people. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER VIDEO: A special ceremony was held Saturday to honor the lives of Fort Worth firefighters who died in the line of duty. David Greene, 56, is the most recent addition to a memorial along West 7th Street in memory of fallen Fort Worth police officers and firefighters. Greene served for 29 years with the Fort Worth Fire Department and was an engineer. He died on September 19, 2022, from an occupational cancer, his family said. "When I was born, he was still in high school. So, he was the older brother I never had. Growing up, we were always picking on each other," Greene's niece Randi said. "He always wanted to help everybody. He had one of the biggest hearts you could ever have." According to the International Association of Firefighters, firefighter occupational cancer is the leading cause of line-of-duty deaths in the fire service. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH |

Boston firefighters were battling an aggressive fire Sunday night at a triple decker in the city's Roxbury neighborhood that had spread to a nearby home, injuring one firefighter and displacing 15 people, including two children. The Boston Fire Department said they were called to 41 Quincy Street around 8:30 p.m. where they encountered heavy fire that extended to 43 and 45 Quincy Street. Additional firefighters were called to help battle the blaze, which was on all three floors of the original home. At one point, there were between 80-100 firefighters on scene. Not only were they navigating icy sidewalks, but crews had to navigate nearby power lines as they were getting ladders up to the multi-family homes. The flames quickly spread to the adjacent structure due to the close proximity of the buildings and the high volume of fire, the fire department said. NECN VIDEO: Lolita Jackson was at her 72nd-floor desk in the World Trade Center, feeling like she worked at the top of the world. Then came the boom, and smoke started curling in from an elevator shaft. Unsure what was happening, she joined thousands of other office workers on a harrowing trek down dark, smoky stairs, emerging into the scene of a terror attack. It wasn't Sept. 11, 2001. This was Feb. 26, 1993, when a deadly bombing killed six people, one of them pregnant, and injured more than 1,000 — becoming a harbinger of terror at the twin towers. Jackson hopes that Sunday's 30th anniversary serves as a reminder that even though decades have passed since the seismic acts of terrorism in the United States' most populous city, no one, anywhere, can say the threat of mass violence is over. She knows that more personally than most: On 9/11, she had to flee the trade center's south tower again. "I'm a living testament that it can happen to you, and it can happen to you twice," Jackson said. WNBC-TV NBC 4 NEW YORK CITY VIDEO: Roy City Fire and Rescue Station 31 replaced its aging fleet with two new ambulances. And on Saturday, KSL got an inside look at the new ambulances. The station went into service last week and has already gone out on calls. They said this gives their firefighters and first responders a way to provide better patient care. When asked if crews could tell the difference between these new ambulances, their answers were a resounding "Yes." "Plenty of power: It gets us where we need to go," said Battalion Chief Jake Rast. Morgan Palmer has worked as a firefighter and advanced emergency medical tech with Roy City Fire and Rescue for the last year and a half. She has noticed a big difference after working and driving the new ambulances. "It's bigger — more spacious — lets us get ready quicker for those fire calls," Palmer said. KSL-TV NBC 5 SALT LAKE CITY Five generations of Schellhammers have passed through the ranks of Cover Hill Volunteer Fire Co., which is celebrating 100 years of battling fires, floods and other tragedies. The Schellhammers and others recognize the strong bond among the families that have labored side by side since 1923 in Conemaugh Township, Cambria County. "We try to keep the family tradition going," Assistant fire Chief Shaun Schellhammer said. "It's like the whole family is basically involved in the fire company." Shaun's wife, Gina, is the fire company's recording secretary. His brother, David, is the treasurer. His father, Ronald Schellhammer, was active in the fire service until his death in 2020 at age 85. The fire company responds to calls in Conemaugh Township, which has 1,800 residents, and Daisytown Borough, with a population of 300. As with many small fire companies, recruiting and retaining volunteers is a challenge. Family ties are crucial. THE TRIBUNE-DEMOCRAT VIDEO/PHOTOS: At least nine tornadoes were reported in Kansas and Oklahoma on Sunday night as a massive winter storm moves east across the U.S. One tornado destroyed a home, toppled trees and knocked over power lines in Liberal, Kansas, near the state line with Oklahoma, according to local authorities. At least 12 people were injured due to the severe weather in Oklahoma's third-largest city, Norman, located about 20 miles south of the state's capital. None of the injuries were critical and there were no reported fatalities, according to the city. Drones are helping assess damage on Monday, Norman Police Chief Kevin Foster said. Some roads have been shut down and two Norman elementary schools are closed, Foster said. Wind gusts over 70 mph and hail measuring 1 inch in diameter were reported in Oklahoma City. ABC NEWS |
