PHOTOS: Amarillo firefighters battled an early morning fire at an abandoned apartment complex. The fire at 209 N. Madison Street started around 5:45 a.m. According to the fire department, several vagrants were seen exiting the complex when firefighters arrived. The roof collapsed, so firefighters set up a defensive attack. Firefighters also searched the rest of the units and found multiple homeless people sleeping in them. They were evacuated. "This is a known hang-out spot for vagrants, as we have responded to multiple fires at this location in recent years," said the fire department. The Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire.

VIDEO: A volunteer firefighter and a Terrell homeowner found a special connection after a devastating house fire. Both are veterans who take pride in flying our nation's flag. It's still unclear how the fire started and what the family will do next, but they just know the level of comfort a Terrell firefighter brought them meant the world. "I've always had a flag flying," Larry Hickson said. You can count on Hickson, a Navy veteran, to have an American flag flying out front and out back at his Terrell home. But right now, his family home for more than 30 years is left in ashes. "This is one of the biggest and most devastating things that has happened to me," Hickson said. It's been a week since Hickson's house in Terrell went up in flames.

A Texas lawmaker is reintroducing a bill that would strengthen fire suppression systems at kennels after a 2021 tragedy at a Georgetown pet facility. State Rep. James Talarico, D-Austin, filed House Bill 66 ahead of the Texas legislative session officially beginning on Tuesday. He previously filed a similar version of this proposal during the third special session in 2021. In a statement shared with KXAN Friday, Talarico explained, "I'm introducing this legislation to protect our pets and ensure tragedies like the one we witnessed in Georgetown never happen again. I'm ready to work with my Republican and Democratic colleagues to protect our loyal companions. House Bill 66 will require all Texas dog kennel operators who don't have a staff member on-site 24/7 to install fire alarms and sprinkler systems. The fire in Georgetown was gut-wrenching and preventable. The time to stop the next disaster is now."

Jane Clockadile is the daughter of an Abington firefighter and granddaughter of a fire chief. She can trace a long line of firefighters back to her forefathers in the late 19th century, such that her family history and the history of the Abington Fire Department are virtually indistinguishable. Today, Clockadile is leading an initiative to restore a fire truck purchased new by the town in 1948 for $12,500. Though she has already done a lot to locate the truck and return it to Abington, significant challenges lay ahead. "I've come this far," Clockadile, whose birth name is Whitman, said. "I'll keep on going." When her cousin, a former firefighter, challenged her to track down Abington's 1942 Seagrave engine several years ago, she put her heart and soul into the investigation. "You can see why I am doing this restoration - in memory of family members," Clockadile said.

A new program in Omaha is helping future firefighters get more hands-on experience as they finish their studies. "Every class you learn a lot, you know, book knowledge, but out here, you're really putting it to use," says Michael Molacek, a student at Metropolitan Community College studying fire science. Molacek is one of around a dozen who are involved in a new internship designed by the fire science program at MCC that partners with Bennington Fire & Rescue. "We are the only school and fire district that have an internship program similar to this, they actually work here alongside an active fire department and the crew thats on duty 24 hours a day," says Jeff Strawn, the Fire Science Program Director at MCC. Several times each month, students will spend a full shift at Bennington learning from the staff and volunteers.
