NORTH TEXAS E-NEWS 31 Fire cadets officially join Laredo Fire Department It was a glorious day for a group of cadets as they officially joined the ranks of the Laredo Fire Department. After roughly 18 months of training, a total of 31 qualified recruits will enter the department as firefighters and paramedics. Many families and friends of the new recruits gathered at the Laredo College Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center Theater in support of their loved ones. Guadalupe Medina, the only female cadet, said that joining the fire department was not something that she had in mind, but she decided to go into EMS at Laredo College. Despite the rigorous training, Medina, the only female was able to overcome the odds and she encourages other potential female firefighters to join the department. "I don't think it's more difficult, you face as many challenges as your male peers. I would just encourage, I would like to see more females, so more females should apply." Medina said the training included six months of fire suppression and 12 months of EMS. SkyEye video showed many firefighters crowded around the hole in the backyard of a home in the 6100 block of Riverview Way. HFD Deputy Chief Bryan Sky-Eagle said three workers were in the backyard of the home, working on a sewer line. The workers dug out a hole about 10 feet deep and 6 feet wide. One worker was inside the hole, working to shore up the walls to prevent a landslide, when the hole collapsed, Sky-Eagle said. Shoring is the process of temporarily supporting a trench with props to prevent collapse. Officials said crews originally tried to dig the man out with a backhoe, but backup was eventually called because of the danger of the situation. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Fatal house fire was latest of New York City battery blazes, FDNY says A Queens house fire that killed one person and injured 10 others was sparked by a lithium-ion battery, the fire department said Saturday. It adds to a series of battery blazes that have caused concern in the city. The latest ripped through two floors of a home on 89th Street, a few blocks from LaGuardia Airport, around 11 p.m. Friday. One occupant was pronounced dead at a hospital after being found on the home's second floor, suffering from smoke inhalation, police said in a release. The fire department said 10 other people, including four firefighters, were taken to hospitals for treatment, at least seven of them with minor injuries. Fire marshals later determined that a lithium-ion battery caused the blaze, the fire department tweeted Saturday. WTHI-TV CBS/FOX/MYNETWORKTV/CW+ 10 TERRE HAUTE Molly the fire safety Dalmatian reached kids across the globe and saved lives; Her legacy lives on With her red-painted nails, matching bandana and fire hat, Molly the Dalmatian earned a special spot in the hearts of children nationwide through fire safety education. Since 9 weeks old, Molly helped Arkansas-based retired firefighter Dayna Hilton teach kids about home escape maps, crawling low under smoke and everything in between. "Molly could test the smoke alarm with her nose," said Hilton, who lives in the state FEMA ranked fourth for fire deaths. "We wanted them to recognize the sound and purpose of a smoke alarm." Copper storage disease claimed the 10-year-old dog's life in December, a week and a half shy of reaching children in her 50th state of Idaho. Molly's fire safety legacy lives on through her younger brother, Boden, who completed Molly's goal earlier this month. "I know Molly was looking down on us that day," Hilton said.
