Tyler Firefighter suffers burns after battling structure fire One firefighter suffered 2nd degree burns after responding to a residential structure fire this morning. Tyler firefighters received a call about a fire at 2801 Ada Ave at 3:26 a.m. A caller from the home reported seeing fire in one of the bedrooms. A resident reported waking up to a fire near a candle that was left burning in a bedroom. Upon noticing the fire, a 12-year-old household member notified her 84-year-old relative. Firefighters arrived to find smoke and flames coming from a rear window and the roof of the structure. Firefighters were able to quickly control the fire and remained on the scene until 5:30 a.m. Investigators with the Tyler Fire Marshal's Office confirmed that the fire originated in a bedroom around an area consistent with the occupant's description. KYTX-TV CBS/CW+ 19 NACOGDOCHES Former Austin Fire Chief Bill Roberts passes away at 85 A former Austin fire chief passed away earlier this month, according to the department. Bill Roberts, who served as AFD's chief from 1983 to 1994, passed away at 85 on January 16. "Our deepest sympathies to Bill's family. We are forever grateful to him for all he did for our department, as well as the fire service as a whole. He was a pioneer and one of a kind," the department said in a release. "Rest in peace, Bill; we'll see you on the top floor." Born in 1938 in Deport, Texas, Roberts served in the Texas Air National Guard from 1960-1966 as a Crash/Fireman and was employed with Municipal Fire Services/Dallas Fire Department for 25 years, reaching the post of Assistant Chief of Administration. He was also nationally recognized for designing and implementing their EMS system, the first paramedic system in Texas, says AFD. KTBC FOX 7 AUSTIN SUV crashes into Dallas fire engine protecting emergency vehicles on I-30 Dallas County Sheriff's Office deputies are investigating after an SUV crashed into a fire engine that was on scene of another crash on I-30 early Saturday morning. The wreck happened just before 5 a.m., in the westbound lanes of the interstate, near N. Hampton Road. The fire engine was blocking traffic due to another crash, when the driver of a dark SUV slammed into the back of the fire engine. The male driver was pinned inside after the wreck. Firefighters were able to get him out, and he was taken to a hospital. His condition was not released. No firefighters were injured. It's unclear if any charges will be filed. KDFW-TV FOX 4 DALLAS Two structure fires occur within a mile radius in north Abilene Two buildings have caught on fire Sunday morning in the same area in north Abilene. The first fire occurred before 6:45 a.m. near the intersection of North 11th and Plum. Crews responded to a shed fire and were able to stop the fire before it affected the connected building. The second fire occurred just a couple streets over near the intersection of North 12th and Pine. Around 6:45 a.m., first responders discovered a building fully engulfed near the intersection of North 12th and Pine. A first responder told KTAB/KRBC that the fire was contained before 7:40 a.m. and the house was uninhabited. Crews were able to contain the fire to the house and yard. Arson was on both scenes and it is unknown if these fires were connected. The cause of both fires is also unknown and is still under investigation. KTAB-TV CBS 32 ABILENE Wood County: Holly Lake community holds benefit for firefighter battling cancer With all the issues people have to deal with now from the economy, to social issues, real life crisis sometimes gets lost in the mix. One East Texas community came together today to help one of their own in his battle with cancer. It was a simple benefit spaghetti meal that meant an awful lot to Holly Lake firefighter Doug Attaway. A gesture of support called ‘his fight is our fight'. "We are fighting for this man, because this man has given so much of himself to our community," said Holly Lake fire PIO Freida Jones. A 15 year veteran of the Holly Lake volunteer fire department, Attaway was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer in November. "I've been a workhorse, strong. It's something that you don't really never want to hear. That you got a time limit on your life," he says. No silent auction, no gimmicks, it was a simple call to the public to come out and have a 10 dollar meal to help Attaway with the medical bills that will soon roll in. VIDEO: Fire crews respond to two-alarm fire in California Fire crews responded to a two-alarm apartment fire in Oakland's Cox neighborhood early Sunday morning, according to the Oakland Fire Department. Crews were called to the fire on the 9500 block of Birch Street and safely evacuated all parties inside of the residence. The property will be salvageable after the blaze, OFD said. Video from the scene shows fire crews arrive at the two-story apartment complex that is fully engulfed in flames. Multiple firefighters in full gear them climb up the stairs, dragging a fire hose along beside them. Seconds later, crews were hosing water onto the structure. KRON-TV FOX 2 OAKLAND 2 Oklahoma firefighters injured after crash on highway VIDEO/PHOTOS: The Tulsa Fire Department says two firefighters suffered no life-threatening injuries after being hit by a car on Highway 75 Sunday night. In a social post, TFD said a vehicle approaching the scene of a crash near 1100 southbound on Highway 75 lost control and crashed into the original car the firefighters were working on. TFD said an OHP officer and the citizen in the original crashed car narrowly escaped, but the two firefighters were hit. The firefighters are being treated at a local hospital and were "banged up," but "Thankfully, both will be ok." KOTV-DT CBS 6 TULSA New helmet cameras give Iowa first responders a new look inside the fire fight VIDEO: The Fort Dodge Fire Department is using a new tool to fight fires. The department's new fire cameras are small, lightweight cameras that are mounted to their helmets. They capture footage that most people have never seen before, and that footage could help make firefighting safer in Fort Dodge. "To have that small, little device on that helmet, that the firefighter doesn't even know it's there, is quite a change," Chief Steve Hergenreter said. Hergenreter never dreamed of this type of technology when he began fighting fires 34 years ago. "Fires happen so fast. And you don't remember a lot of things, so the helmet camera really shows how things happened in the fire," Hergenreter said. "It's made specifically for firefighters," firefighter and paramedic Mychal Edler said. KCCI-TV CBS 8 DES MOINES Survivors, first responders remember deadly North Carolina explosion 20 years later VIDEO: Sunday marks the 20th anniversary of an explosion that changed Lenoir County forever. In 2003, a blast at a manufacturing facility killed six people and hurt 30 others. WITN talked with first responders and survivors as they look back at a day that will stay with them forever. "I didn't hear [anything]. Everything turned white, and that was it," said Jim Edwards, who was working the day of the explosion. January 29th, 2003 is not an easy day for him to remember. It's the day he lost his eyesight - the day six co-workers were killed and nearly 40 hurt in a massive explosion at West Pharmaceutical. Edwards remembers waving for rescuers to help him. We've caught up with him over the years to check on his progress. "I was burnt, 63 percent of my body. I hurt every day for about six months," he explained.
