VIDEO/PHOTO: Massive Housefire In Celina Destroys 2 Homes Under Construction Celina firefighters managed to contain a large fire before it could spread very far after multiple homes under construction went up in flames on Sunday, January 30. Just after 5:00 p.m., Celina firefighters received a structure fire call from the 2800 block of Field Street in Celina. Two or three homes under construction had caught on fire. The heat became so intense that nearby homes were threatened and that a grass fire was sparked to the north of the Bluewood subdivision just south of the Collin college campus. Jeff Hershberger lives about 50 feet from the homes that caught on fire. He said that in addition to the fire department units who responded, several of his neighbors "whom he had never met before" rushed to help contain the blaze. KTVT-TV CBS 11 FORT WORTH 2 seriously burned in explosion at Denton storage units, officials say Two people were taken to a hospital with serious burns early Saturday after an explosion at a Denton storage unit, where they were living, officials said. A fire after the explosion damaged 12 units in the storage complex, according to David Boots, a Denton fire battalion chief. The two victims were a man and a woman who were trying to transfer propane from a large cylinder to smaller cylinders when the explosion happened, Boots said. The man was critically injured with second- and third-degree burns. The woman was in stable condition but had first- and second-degree burns. Both were taken to Medical City Plano, officials said. Firefighters had responded about 3:30 a.m. to the 3300 block of Fort Worth Drive, where multiple storage units were burning. No firefighters were reported injured. The fire was under control by 4:30 a.m. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS El Paso Firefighters rescue injured hiker from Franklin Mountains VIDEO: El Paso firefighters performed a mountain rescue Sunday morning after a hiker sustained serious injuries to her leg and head. KVIA-TV ABC/CW 7 EL PASO Former Big Sandy firefighter helps driver after vehicle catches on fire VIDEO: A vehicle bursts into flames along an East Texas highway, but luckily a former firefighter was traveling in the area and went into action. It happened around 11 Sunday morning as vehicle was heading westbound on highway 80 just a couple of miles from Big Sandy in Upshur county. The car was a roaring inferno by the time Big Sandy fire crews arrived on scene, and they quickly made a perimeter around it to protect passing drivers and nearby residents. It all started when a westbound driver pulled over to the shoulder when he saw flames shooting from his hood. A former East Texas firefighter just happened to be in the area, and spotted the driver. "As I pulled up the vehicle had just started to be on fire. Got out of my vehicle, made sure driver was the only occupant, everyone else was safe. Got a hold of dispatch and made sure the Big Sandy fire department got out here," said Ken Danapas. KLTV ABC/TELEMUNDO 7 TYLER Preparing for the worst: Local agencies participate in search and rescue exercises in Brazos County A tragedy can strike at any moment, but local agencies are committed to staying prepared and learning how to best collaborate with one another. The Bryan Fire Department, in conjunction with the Brazos Valley Search & Rescue Group, held a training exercise at Lake Bryan Saturday to further develop these skills. Some of the agencies involved in the training included the Bryan Police Department, College Station Fire Department, East Texas Mounted Search and Rescue and the Texas A&M Veterinary Emergency Team. "Each group learns what the other group is capable of doing, we get to learn and meet each individual so when we get to that exercise or real event, I now know you by name," Cory Matthews, the exercise director, said. The exercise played off a scenario that six people went out on a boat Lake Bryan before a storm came in, according to Matthews. KBTX-TV CBS 3 BRYAN Human error causes Killeen apartment fire At least two people are displaced, and there are no injuries after a Killeen apartment caught fire around 11:50 a.m. on Harris Avenue, according to the Killeen Fire Department. Officials say when crews arrived on scene they found the first floor center unit fully engulfed, and the fire was traveling up to the second floor unit. "Thank God I'm OK, thank God everyone else is OK, and no one else got hurt," apartment resident Brendon Virnala said. "And thank God my drip is OK." The fire marshal's office has determined the cause of the fire to be accidental caused by human error. "The fire seems like it was improperly discarded smoking materials or improperly used smoking materials," Killeen fire chief James Kubinski said. One apartment resident who lives above the unit where the fire happened said he was asleep, then came outside to see what was going on. KWKT-TV FOX 44 WACO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Hilpert assumed her duties of overseeing Rural Metro's fire stations in the Yuma area of southwestern Arizona this month, the Yuma Sun reported. Hilpert began her career with the Rural Metro Fire as a reserve firefighter and EMT in 2000. During her tenure with the company, she has also served as a certified paramedic firefighter, wildland firefighter, crew boss, rescue diver, emergency medical service captain, EMS chief and assistant fire chief. KSAZ-TV FOX 10 PHOENIX Fire still burns at 95: Firefighter is oldest-serving member in South Carolina Hobart "Hobie" Erickson put in 30 years at a fire department in New Jersey and rose to the level of captain. Then, he and his wife, Lois, retired to the Lakelands. End of story, right? Absolutely not. Erickson kept riding by the Donalds Fire Department, and Lois encouraged him to volunteer. That eventually fueled his internal flame to return to doing what he always loved. Erickson joined the Donalds station and has spent 35 1/2 years there. He's squeezed two full careers into one lifetime. Erickson is the oldest active firefighter in the state, according to officials from the South Carolina Firefighters Association, who came Saturday to present him a certificate. In addition, state Sen. Mike Gambrell presented him a proclamation, and the Town of Donalds and fire chief Ronnie Vaughn also gave Erickson gifts. "He'll expire before he retires," Lois joked during Saturday's 95th birthday party for Erickson at the station. FIRST COAST NEWS This map is the key to when US might start easing COVID-19 restrictions VIDEO: There is now more optimism that the worst of the coronavirus pandemic may be ending -- and as other nations lift certain Covid-19 restrictions, some public health experts question whether US counties and cities should consider easing their guidance on mask-wearing or social distancing, as well. But others warn not to relax such measures too soon. Denmark has decided to lift all Covid-19 restrictions within the country, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced Wednesday evening, adding that Covid-19 "should no longer be categorized as a socially critical sickness." "Denmark will be completely open from 1 February," Frederiksen said. "Tonight we can start lowering our shoulders and find our smiles again. CNN HEALTH PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
