| Drone footage captures major fire at shopping center in Odessa; multiple business affected VIDEO/PHOTO: Drone footage obtained by NewsWest 9 shows a large fire that happened on Sunday morning at Payne's Gym in the Town & Country Shopping Center in Odessa. According to the City of Odessa, Odessa Fire Rescue got a call about the structure fire at 9 a.m. When OFR arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from Payne's Gym. The fire quickly spread to the common attic space of the strip mall and advanced to the north. "Payne's Gym and the Town & Country Barber Shop are a total loss," the city said. "Aaron's Rent to Own Furniture & More and Town & Country Drug have severe smoke damage." OFR and OFR Investigators were on scene. KWES-TV NBC 9 ODESSA Austin Fire Department celebrates 34 new graduates from 'Pass the Torch' program More than 30 cadets graduated from the Austin Fire Department's spring Pass the Torch program, designed to give those who sign up a taste of what the fire academy - and training to be a firefighter - is like. For Pass the Torch cadets like Victoria Kelly, Saturday was bittersweet. "I really, kind of, had to discover myself during this program, Kelly said. "I'm excited, but also again sad that this is the last time I'm going to be with some of these guys." She and 33 others graduated from the Austin Fire Department's spring training program, Pass the Torch. "It was a brutal, brutal task," Kelly said. "The physical training aspect of it was hard, especially in this heat, but it was a lot of fun." Pass the Torch was designed to give potential recruits a preview of what the Austin fire academy is like, and help with the department's recruitment and retention. KEYE-TV CBS 42 AUSTIN 3 heat-related deaths confirmed after Beryl's damage in Harris County, medical examiner's office says According to the Harris County Medical Examiner's Office, there have been at least three deaths related to heat exposure as hundreds of thousands remain without power for a fifth consecutive day. Officials say one of the victims was a 76-year-old man who died of hyperthermia inside his home near Pasadena High School on Wednesday. Another death was a 50-year-old woman who died of hyperthermia in environmental heat exposure due to power loss from the havoc Beryl caused. The third death involves a 78-year-old man who died of hyperthermia following a residential power loss during Beryl. On Friday, the Houston Fire Department told ABC13 that 158 heat-related calls, 301 carbon monoxide calls, and 1,298 light wire-related calls occurred since Beryl's landfall. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON Two travel trailers are a total loss after a fire in Midland Two travel trailers were fully engulfed in flames around 8:45 a.m. on Sunday morning, according to the Midland Fire Department. The fire happened in the 4100 block of South County Road 1201. When MFD arrived to the scene, both trailers were deemed a total loss because of the fire. According to photos released by MFD, the fire was put out. MFD also reports that a third trailer sustained substantial damage due to radiant heat. According to firefighters on scene, no one was injured in relation to the incident. A renter of one of the affected trailers is being assisted by the Red Cross. | VIDEO: Firefighter injured after blaze torches stacked pallets, vehicles, trucks and trailers in California PHOTOS: A firefighter was injured while putting out a massive pallet yard fire in San Bernardino County, authorities said. According to the San Bernardino County Fire Department, firefighters were dispatched to the 15000 block of Whittram Avenue in Fontana around 8:15 p.m. Saturday. When they got to the scene, crews observed a "stacked pallet yard well-involved with fire," officials said. The blaze was ultimately escalated to a four-alarm fire, eliciting a response from surrounding agencies. "Upon arrival of additional resources, it was found that about a quarter-acre of stacked pallets, vehicles, trucks and trailers were burning," the San Bernardino County Fire Department said in a statement. "Additionally, three power poles were involved in the fire, which required Edison to handle the hazard as suppression efforts were being initiated." KTLA-TV CW 5 LOS ANGELES FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh to step down, help find replacement The head of the New York City Fire Department has notified Mayor Eric Adams that she intends to step down from her post in order to explore other career opportunities, officials familiar with the commissioner's plans told News 4. "My dedication to the FDNY has never and will never waver. It has been the honor of a lifetime to devote the last 10 years — five as first deputy commissioner and more than two as commissioner — to advocating for the men and women of the FDNY," Commissioner Laura Kavanagh said in a statement. Kavanagh has served as the commissioner for the city's fire department for nearly two years, after serving as the acting commissioner following the retirement of Daniel Nigro in Feb. 2022. She has been the first female commissioner in the department's 159-year history. WNBC-TV NBC 4 NEW YORK CITY 2 fire tanker trucks heading to large Pennsylvania warehouse blaze crash, injuring 7 firefighters PHOTOS: Authorities say seven firefighters were injured when two tanker trucks crashed while responding to a large blaze in York, Pennsylvania. Officials said the crash occurred shortly before 11 p.m. Friday in Spring Garden Township, about a third of a mile from the large warehouse fire in the city. The York New Salem Volunteer Fire Company said in a post on its Facebook page that five members sustained injuries ranging from "some minor bumps and bruises to some being a little more serious" — but none of the injuries were life-threatening. Chief David Rittenhouse of the Laurel Fire Company No. 1 of Windsor said both firefighters staffing its tanker were taken to WellSpan York Hospital for evaluation, but had been discharged by 1 a.m. Saturday.
