VIDEO: Houston firefighters put out a two-alarm apartment fire in west Houston and managed to evacuate everyone, including a dog, safely from the building. Firefighters were called to the fire at the Whitfield Apartments off Whittington Drive just west of Dairy Ashford. The fire started in a second story unit and spread to another one, according to witnesses. No injuries were reported. Cell phone video seen above shows the heroic moment a firefighter walked out of the building with a dog that was left behind in its cage. The pup can be seen being handed over to its owner. Officials were still working to investigate the cause of the fire.

About 10 cars were damaged and the back of the building collapsed during a fire at an auto repair shop on the southeast side, according to the San Antonio Fire Department. Firefighters responded to Temple Hill Automotive at 1703 Goliad Road around 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, where they found smoke coming out of the shop. Fire officials said no injuries were reported, but estimated several hundred thousand dollars worth of damage to the building and the cars inside. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

Garland police and fire crews found a woman's body during a search Sunday evening, after a vehicle got trapped in rushing water early Sunday morning, officials said. First responders were called around 2:18 a.m. to the 1700 block of Holford Road. As the fire department arrived on the scene, they saw a Nissan Altima trapped in the rushing water at the north end of the bridge. Crews said due to the depth and speed of the rushing water, firefighters were unable to safely reach the vehicle. The water was believed to have been approximately 12 to 24 inches deep, officials said. Firefighters later found the vehicle unoccupied in a creek approximately 300 yards from the bridge. They believed only one person was inside. Sunday evening, crews said they found a woman's body. Police said she has not been identified at this time.

Some of my favorite memories include Mayfest, a fundraising event that was put on by the New Braunfels Volunteer Fire Department beginning in the early 20th Century. The early versions of the day-long event included parades, picnics in Landa Park, foot races, sack races and pumper races. The celebrations that I remember featured barbecue dinners, pumper races and dances in the evening. The pumper races were my favorite. I loved the tight-knit crews, the excitement of the race and the rush to push water, all skills they used in fighting a fire. Never seen a pumper race? Let me explain. In 1886, the growing city of New Braunfels took steps to acquire their first fire-fighting equipment — a hose reel cart and hook and ladder cart. About that time the New Braunfels Volunteer Fire Department was formed.

A teenage boy unplugging an extension cord that was fully submerged in water died Friday morning outside the city of Mission. According to Hidalgo County Fire Marshall Homero Garza, the extension cord was connected from a house to a trailer home on the 3700 block of North Palm Leaf Circle in La Homa. The 14-year-old boy was walking through a puddle of water when he was electrocuted and died at around 11:20 a.m. The street was flooded, according to Garza. Hidalgo County Precinct 3 crews were already at the scene clearing water from the area when the accident happened. "So please be vigilant on where your electrical cords are at," Hidalgo County Precinct 3 Commissioner Everardo Villarreal said. "Obviously we all know that water and electricity are mortal enemies and we don't want another tragedy to happen like this one."

An adorable, black puppy who found himself trapped inside an underground pipe in northwest Houston earlier this week is now safe and sound with his mother and owner. The Houston SPCA said before the pup was rescued, his owner could hear him crying for quite some time before they were able to realize their dog was stuck inside a narrow pipe under some concrete. The owner called for help and that's when a team of firefighters from Houston Fire Department's Station 49 arrived on scene and broke through the concrete to widen the hole. Houston SPCA said firefighters acted quickly because they didn't want the puppy to crawl farther into the pipe. The pup's owner was slim enough to reach down inside the hole and grab the clearly anxious pup and reunite him with his mother.

VIDEO/PHOTOS: Phoenix fire officials say a sixth alarm fire at a recycling yard near 35th Avenue and Buckeye prompted the largest response in the department's history on June 5. "I can't remember the last time we had a sixth alarm," said Phoenix Fire Captain Todd Keller. "We've had a couple two, three alarms in the last couple of months, but this is a big one." The fire was originally a first alarm early Saturday afternoon, but it quickly escalated, maxing out the alarm system and triggering the type of response that would normally only be seen with wildfires. Residents say that the smoke could be seen from as far as Mesa and Ahwatukee. Meanwhile, fire officials say 150 residential and commercial customers were without power for about 10 hours.

Firefighters with the Menlo Park Fire Protection District have new technology that helps them navigate through burning buildings and find people twice as fast, according to the Fire Chief. The technology is called the C-Thru platform. It includes a navigation unit that attaches to the firefighter's helmet and allows them to clearly see objects in a burning building. Made by San Francisco based startup, Qwake Technologies, the C-Thru navigator uses thermal imaging technology to help firefighters identify objects in their path, retrace their steps to find exits and communicate with other firefighters. The Menlo Park Fire Protection District is the first in the nation to use the new technology. Fire Chief Harold Schapelhouman said they signed a contract on Friday to purchase units for each of their 40 front-line firefighters, for a total of $210,000.

VIDEO: A man was taken away in handcuffs after getting into a dangerous altercation with a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crew, and it was all caught on camera. The incident occurred Sunday afternoon at the intersection of Southwest Eighth Street and 42nd Avenue. Cellphone video shows a man dressed all in white striking the front windshield of a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue truck with a baseball bat, cracking the glass. It doesn't appear that anyone inside the fire truck was injured. A Coral Gables police officer arrived at the scene first and took the man into custody, however the incident is being investigated by the Miami-Dade Police Department. The suspect's identity has not yet been released and it's still unclear why he became upset with the firefighters.

VIDEO: A pair of pint-sized brothers in Brooklyn are making a big impact on their community. Gideon and Josiah Trank, ages eight and seven, have raised hundreds of dollars for first responders with their front yard lemonade stand. Friday, they rented the Cocky's Bagels food truck for the Brooklyn police and fire departments with their earnings. The truck parked outside of the police station between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. and served up bagel sandwiches and other treats with the brothers behind the counter taking orders. "We love our heroes," Gideon said. "We're doing this because they're probably hungry." That love for first responders was instilled in them by their parents, Machelle and Avery Trank.
