He 27 years of experience with the Duncanville Fire Department and has worked for Navarro College as an instructor for fire, fire science, fire technology and EMS continuing education programs. Ryan takes over as Chief for interim Fire Chief Wade Gillen who stepped in when former Corsicana Fire Chief Paul Henley accepted the Chief's position in Flower Mound last October. CORSICANA DAILY SUN South Bexar County house catches fire, strong winds spread flames fast VIDEO: A house caught on fire early Monday morning in south Bexar County. Just before 5 a.m., firefighters responded to the blaze in the 11000 block of U.S. Highway 181 South near Donop Road. Officials with Bexar County ESD #10 said the initial call came out as a fire on the porch. But due to the high winds, the fire quickly spread and engulfed the home with flames. Firefighters quickly attacked the fire and were able to get the fire under control. Primary and secondary searches of the home were clear. It's unclear how many people were in the home at the time. It appears though that they made it out safely. Arson investigators were called to the scene to determine the cause of the fire. The home was severely damaged by the fire. Crews are still at the scene working to ensure all hotspots are out. KENS-TV CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO Man In Critical Condition After Denton House Fire A man was taken to a local hospital in critical condition after a house in Denton caught fire on Mar. 6. The Denton Fire Department (DFD) received a call about a structure fire at a home in the 2300 block of Royal Acres at about 1:55 p.m. Within two minutes, a Denton fire engine and ambulance were on scene and reported heavy smoke coming from the back of the house. A neighbor told crews that the owner's car was present and that he was still in the house. When fire crews made entry, they found the house was full of piles of objects that made fire attack and searching extremely difficult. A male victim in his 60s was found in a back bedroom that was full of heavy smoke but no fire. The man was pulled from the house, and DFD crews began performing CPR. He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital and arrived there in critical condition with a pulse. KTVT-TV CBS 11 FORT WORTH Panel addresses what Texas could have done better to prevent Rolling Pines fire An independent panel of fire experts from across the country issued its opinion and recommendations Monday about how Texas Parks and Wildlife Department personnel handled the prescribed burn that sparked the Rolling Pines Fire on Jan. 18. Made up of wildland fire experts part of state forestry agents from Georgia, Oklahoma, Florida and South Carolina, the panel said while "quick action" from the burn boss helped mitigate damage, there should have been more firefighters on-site to begin with. The fire spread past its boundaries and ended up burning 812 acres of land in Bastrop State Park and 250 families had to be evacuated, but no buildings were damaged and no injuries were reported associated with the blaze. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Houston Fire Department: Possible gas leak leads to house explosion in East End The Houston Fire Department is looking to what caused a duplex to set on fire in the East End area. It happened shortly after midnight Saturday on Sherman Street. A man living on the second floor was found in front of the duplex with first- and second-degree burns. A district chief at the scene said the victim just moved there that same day. He was taken to a nearby hospital, but his current condition is unknown. The chief said there was another man living on the bottom floor. He was woken up by neighbors who knocked on his door to tell him about the fire. That man was not hurt. Firefighters believe the explosion and fire may have started because of a gas leak. The victim said he lit a cigarette and heard the explosion shortly after. One wall of the building was detached from the rest of the structure. The chief said that's not normal for a fire. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON Fort Worth Fire Department recruits hold stair climb to help families of Afghan refugees Fire department recruits in Fort Worth had their strength and stamina tested Monday to support families who fled Afghanistan. At the Bob Bolen Public Safety Complex, about 25 firefighting recruits got up early and climbed a couple hundred flights of stair multiple times. The training tower is seven stories and there's no central heating. The recruits had not yet been issued firefighting gear, so they were feeling the cold Monday morning. As they were making the climb, they were raising money for non-profit groups that are helping Afghan refugee families settle into housing and enroll in Fort Worth schools. All of the families include at least one adult who assisted the United States military in Afghanistan, fighting the global war on terror, putting themselves and sometimes their families at great personal risk. Rural homeowner in Idaho uses tractor to tow fire engine uphill to fight house fire PHOTOS: Rural firefighters had to get creative while fighting a house fire in a remote area Saturday night. Swan Valley Fire Department spokeswoman Kat Brainard said the call came in around 9:15 p.m. at 224 Pine Creek Bench Road. A witness had spotted a chimney fire at the home that was spreading to other areas of the residence. The problem was that the home was located at the end of a steep, narrow one-mile driveway. Brainard said firefighters quickly realized their fire engine would not be able to get to the home due to the nature of the driveway. Firefighters and members of the community were in the process of moving things away from the blaze, when the homeowner arrived with a tractor to tow the fire engine from the bottom of the driveway to the home. "We don't always have what we need to get to a scene," Brainard said. "So we have to work with what there is." EAST IDAHO NEWS ‘We didn't know better': Toxic foam concerns follow firefighters through life Firefighters around the country are just starting the tedious process of removing firefighting foam that contains "forever chemicals." This toxic foam contains PFAS, or poly-fluoroalkyl substances, which can remain in the environment and in human bodies. This foam may cause health problems, including cancer. Firefighters have used this foam for more than 20 years to help them put out difficult fires, not knowing it could actually be hurting them. "We assumed this chemical was something that was not only effective on the fire ground but also safe to us," Denver Fire Capt. Greg Pixley said. In a methodical, step-by-step process, the Denver Fire Department is removing the foam known as AFFF, or aqueous film-forming foam. The fire engines can carry 25-50 gallons of the concentrate. They've called in a company that specializes in hazardous materials removal. They drain and flush all of the fire engines. WWLP-TV NBC/CW+ 22 SPRINGFIELD Firefighter transported to the hospital after raging fire at Tennessee hotel; Fire intentionally set VIDEOS: Memphis Fire Department arrived on the scene of an active fire at Baymont Inn hotel on the 6000 block of Shelby Oaks Drive Monday, March 7 at 12:57. According to an official statement released from MFD, the fire started when several mattresses were placed against the hotel building and intentionally set on fire. Massive flames spread across the building, reaching the third floor. One MFD firefighter was transported to Baptist East from heat exhaustion and is in non-critical condition. 30 people were displaced from their hotel rooms due to the fire. According to MFD, 118 personnel were involved in the response to the fire and it was pronounced under control nearly three and a half hours later, at 3:34am MFD advises drivers to avoid the area and that those traveling in the area should expect delays due to the ongoing investigation. WATN-TV ABC 24 MEMPHIS Related Video: Memphis hotel evacuated after catching fire Rash of electrical fires push FDNY to teach better safety The massive fires that seemed to engulf building after building in the borough back in the late 1970s and early ‘80s led many declaring the "Bronx is burning." In fact, it almost felt unusual to not use the word "fire" in conjunction with "Bronx," because the two had become so synonymous during that time. Yet, while times have changed, some things have remained the same. That's because over the last six months, a string of major fires has plagued the borough. But don't worry, none of that is lost on Michael Kozo. He's the director of the New York Fire Department's fire safety education unit, and has provided training presentations to just about any group that extends an invitation — including Community Board 8's housing committee back in January. "The information we give (at these meetings) are always increasing," Kozo said. THE RIVERDALE PRESS How many Americans have been infected with COVID-19? Nearly double what has been reported Arecent CDC study found that around 140 million Americans have been infected by the coronavirus, almost double the number regularly reported in national COVID-19 case counts. And while some experts say this increase in population immunity could help stem future surges, others remain cautious about potential new variants, as well as waning immunity in the future. For the study, CDC analyzed 72,000 blood samples collected by commercial labs nationwide between Dec. 27, 2021, and Jan. 29, 2022. The blood samples were originally sent to labs for reasons unrelated to COVID-19 but were also tested for coronavirus antibodies. The study counted each person only once and included only antibodies from natural infection, including asymptomatic cases. ADVISORY BOARD PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
