Travis County chief named Texas Fire Chief of the Year Travis County Fire Chief Donnie Norman was named the 2019 TFCA Fire Chief of the Year this week, according to a release from the Texas Fire Chiefs Association. Norman has been the fire chief of Travis County Emergency Services District 1 for nearly six years, joining the unit in June 2014. Norman started his fire service career 41 years ago in his home state of Ohio before moving to Texas in 1985. The release says a selection committee chose the fire chief "that has shown exemplary contributions in the areas of leadership, innovation, professional development, service to the public, and contributions to the fire service community as a whole." Last year, Norman was integral in establishing a Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician Program between Travis County ESD 1 and Lago Vista High School. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN One hospitalized after fire destroys Kilgore home One person is hospitalized with burns after an early morning fire at an old East Texas residence. It happened just after 8 Saturday morning in Kilgore at a home in the 300 block of N. Gladewater St. Several units responded near the old downtown area of Kilgore as roaring flames were spotted coming the home. "Shortly after 8 am firefighters responded to a structure fire behind me right here for a residential structure fire, upon arrival the second floor was pretty much totally involved," said Gregg County fire marshal Mark Moore. Near Kilgore feed company, fire crews had some difficulty with the home being well off the roadway. "It was a challenge to the firefighters due to the logistics of the area," Moore says. One woman was inside the home when it caught fire. She made it out of the home but not without injury. KLTV-TV ABC 7 TYLER San Antonio Fire Department: Teen taken to hospital for burns after West Side apartment fire A 15-year-old was taken to the hospital for burn injuries after an apartment fire broke out on the West Side, according to San Antonio Fire Department. The fire happened around 6 p.m. in the 7200 block of Marbach Road. Firefighters say the fire started in an upstairs apartment unit and was contained. One other apartment unit was damaged by water. The 15-year-old's injuries are non-life threatening, SAFD says. No word yet on what caused the fire. The investigation is ongoing. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO TEEX Fire School's spring sessions include rope rescues, auto extractions About 400 firefighters from across Texas have flocked to the Brayton Fire Training Field this week to learn facets of municipal and industrial firefighting as part of TEEX's Spring Fire School. Two new courses have been added this year to the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service's Spring Fire School catalogue, including rope rescue training and automobile extraction. For instruction involving automobile extraction, 35 students and nine guest instructors have spent time each day this week learning both in the classroom and in the field, working with tools and junked cars. According to TEEX spokeswoman Casey Richardson, this is the first time that the extraction course — popular training with limited slots for students — has been offered in the spring session. BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION EAGLE Four People Rescued from House Fire in Dallas Four people are safe after a house fire in Dallas early Sunday morning. KXAS-TV NBC 5 DALLAS - FORT WORTH Houston city officials address how firefighters are being protected from coronavirus In Washington State, more than two dozen firefighters are in quarantine after being exposed to the COVID-19 while responding to calls. On Saturday, while Houston remembered 75 fallen firefighters in a memorial ceremony, city officials also addressed what is being done to keep current firefighters and EMTs safe from the virus. "If they are exposed, if they are ill, then it's going to affect everybody. Not only the community that we serve but them and their family," said Chief Sam Peña of the Houston Fire Department. Peña added the department is changing how many personnel respond to certain types of calls to limit how many could be potentially exposed to the coronavirus. "Until we get a good sense of what this virus is going to do," he explained. KRIV-TV FOX 26 HOUSTON PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Firefighter, resident identified in fatal Pennsylvania fire The Cumberland County Coroner's Office has released the names of the two people killed Monday morning in a fire in Monroe Township. Jerome Guise, 34, of Boiling Springs, was a firefighter with the Mount Holly Springs fire department, Coroner Charley Hall said. Guise was killed when the front porch of the home on the 1500 block of Boiling Springs Road collapsed while he was fighting the fire. Resident Jessica Diehl, 36, died inside the home during the fire. A man who lived there was severely injured and rushed to the hospital. A dog was also killed in the fire, officials say. "All the firefighters around here are volunteers. They have a very dangerous job," Pennsylvania State Police spokeswoman Trooper Megan Ammerman said at the scene. "The fire and police, we're all family. It's a very difficult time for the firefighters in the area, especially." PENNLIVE PATRIOT-NEWS FDNY firefighters won't be dispatched to potential coronavirus cases They're not the Bravest when it comes to the coronavirus. The FDNY won't dispatch its firefighters to potential coronavirus patients, leaving its paramedics and EMTs to handle them alone, The Post has learned. The department issued an order Friday temporarily relieving firefighters from responding to calls of the second highest priority for patients with fever, coughing, difficulty breathing or even those who are unconscious. A fever, cough and trouble breathing are the most common symptoms of the novel coronavirus, officially called COVID-19. "We can't believe they would put out this order during one of the biggest citywide health crises. The fact that they're abdicating all of this is just astounding," one paramedic told The Post. "You're talking about people who call themselves the Bravest." EMTs and paramedics, with their ranks already depleted, believe the order will further strain the system. NEW YORK POST Crash scene ingenuity: Massachusetts firefighters use truck to pull car apart, extricate pinned driver When the Jaws of Life don't work and a man is dying, a little ingenuity and a big engine could prove to be the best combination. West Springfield and Westfield firefighters pulled a crashed vehicle apart with a fire truck to extricate a seriously injured driver Wednesday, said West Springfield Lt. Andrew Lyne. Paramedics were worried he might not live through the episode, Lyne said. As West Springfield firefighters were called to a large blaze at the Courtyard by Mariott hotel on Riverdale Street Wednesday afternoon, one engine was sent to the report of a head-on crash on Prospect Avenue just before 3 p.m. Lyne, the commander of Engine 2, said responders found a car and a large dumpster-hauling truck had collided head-on. The impact of the crash dislodged the engine of the car, spinning it 180 degrees and pushing it into the passenger compartment — something Lyne said he has never seen in 28 years as a firefighter. THE REPUBLICAN - MASSLIVE Proposed shuffling of fire-rescue staff in Virginia concerns residents Some residents in northeast Albemarle County are concerned about a proposal to move daytime fire-rescue staff farther away from their area. As part of County Executive Jeff Richardson's proposed budget for fiscal year 2021, Albemarle County Fire Rescue would reallocate weekday, daytime fire-rescue staff from Stony Point Volunteer Fire Company and East Rivanna Volunteer Fire Company to the Crozet Volunteer Fire Department and Pantops Public Safety Station to meet system-wide response time standards and call volume. The reallocation was proposed in response to a request by the Crozet department to ACFR to provide supplemental weekday, daytime staffing. "We provided that as an option versus hiring the additional staff that's needed to staff Crozet Fire Department, mainly because we haven't really looked at that configuration since staff was put out there over 20 years ago," ACFR Chief Dan Eggleston said in an interview Wednesday. THE DAILY PROGRESS After Parkland tragedy, Florida Senate OK's panic buttons to simultaneously alert staff, first responders Florida lawmakers were on the verge of sending Gov. Ron DeSantis legislation Friday that requires panic buttons at every school, the latest security measure being implemented on campuses after the Parkland school shooting two years ago that killed 17. The measure, known as "Alyssa's Law," would establish an electronic link between schools and law enforcement — and reduce the confusion that became so apparent as a gunman roamed the grounds of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Valentine's Day 2018. The Florida Senate unanimously approved the measure, which would require schools to set up a so-called panic button system that, when activated, would simultaneously alert school staff and first responders to life-threatening campus emergencies.
