Texas gets drive-through coronavirus testing in San Antonio for first responders, health care workers Texas' first drive-through testing facility for the new coronavirus opened Friday in San Antonio to first responders and health care workers who qualify, city officials confirmed. The drive-through testing is not open to the general public, officials said in a press release. Testing will be open all week during business hours to those who qualify, Joe Arrington, a public information officer for the San Antonio Fire Department, told The Texas Tribune. In order to use the drive-through test, a person's employer must confirm he or she is ill and meets the criteria to be tested — having symptoms of COVID-19 and testing negative for the flu, Arrington said. The organization will also schedule the testing on the employee's behalf. City officials did not disclose the exact location of the drive-through testing facility. TEXAS TRIBUNE Related: San Antonio firefighter with flu-like symptoms to undergo coronavirus testing A San Antonio firefighter has self-quarantined at home after developing flu-like symptoms, the San Antonio Fire Department told KENS 5 on Friday. The firefighter, who was not identified, will undergo coronavirus testing and is cooperating with public health officials. The individual had been on vacation on their personal time, the department said. "The SAFD will take all appropriate steps to ensure this individual receives the support they need and that the safety and health of our family and that of our customers is always our top priority," the department said. "This individual poses no threat to any of our potential patients, and will not be returning to work until cleared of all testing and any flu-like symptoms." Earlier Friday, city and health officials announced at a press conference the first confirmed case of coronavirus in San Antonio from outside of the JBSA-Lackland quarantine. KENS CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO Firefighters able to rescue man from fire in Fort Worth apartment building Fort Worth firefighters rescued at least one person trapped inside a burning apartment complex early Sunday morning. Firefighters were called out at about 1:30 a.m., to a complex along East Rosedale Street, near Loop 820 in East Fort Worth. Flames were shooting out of the roof when fire crews arrived. Firefighters immediately jumped into action when the people who lived there told them that a man was trapped inside one of the apartments. "Found a gentleman about three to four feet inside the front door," said Kyle Clay, with the Fort Worth Fire Department. "Attempted a rescue, and that gentleman was transported, 30-year-old man, transported to the hospital." At least two others were taken to a hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. KDFW FOX 4 NEWS DALLAS Odessa Fire Rescue prepared for infectious disease thanks to ISOpods VIDEO: Odessa Fire and Rescue could be one of the most prepared departments if we start to see confirmed cases of COVID-19 locally. After the 2014 Ebola scare, the department started preparing with special training and tools in case of another pandemic. The department is prepared for calls beyond what's typical. "We always prepare for infectious diseases," said Rodd Huber, Assistant Chief EMS with Odessa Fire Rescue. OFR is keeping a close watch on how COVID-19 is affecting other fire departments around the country. "We kind of learned from what the departments did in Washington, some of our fellow brothers and sisters in Washington were self quarantined for almost two weeks... They had to shut down fire stations in Washington so we want to make sure that we learn from history and not repeat those same mistakes," said Huber. Most Alaska villages lack road access and hospitals - Here's how they'll fight the coronavirus Even in cities with big hospitals, the novel coronavirus is testing the limits of the modern health care system. But fighting the virus in rural Alaska presents additional challenges: Some of Alaska's remote villages can be 100 miles from the nearest hospital, and many are disconnected from the road system and only reachable by plane. That isolation could make treatment more challenging, and epidemic disease has devastated rural Alaska before. But the remoteness of many of Alaska's villages can also be an advantage, making it easier to control people moving in and out and to quarantine or isolate them if necessary. "There's potential for this to be contained and not to be catastrophic in rural Alaska. But if it's mismanaged, it could be considerably worse," said Kevin Berry, a University of Alaska Anchorage economist who's studied epidemic disease and response. ALASKA PUBLIC MEDIA NEWS Florida commissioner asks if first responders should ‘take one for the team' with coronavirus A South Florida elected official is facing some backlash from emergency workers after he appeared to propose exposing firefighters to the new coronavirus as a way of ensuring there are more people with immunity to help fight the spread of the disease. Miami Beach Commissioner Ricky Arriola on Friday at an emergency city meeting asked if there were doctors in the audience. Nobody answered. He suggested that if people who survive the coronavirus then have immunity — like the chicken pox — then the city can take steps to help others. "Assuming you make it through," Arriola said, before describing what he called a "dangerous but bold" idea: "First responders voluntarily taking one for the team" and then developing immunity. Arriola did not elaborate what he meant by the "taking one for the team" phrase. SOUTH FLORIDA SUN SENTINEL - METERED SITE IAFC Launches Coronavirus Task Force The IAFC is continuing to monitor the spread of the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) inside the United States. As your agency likely is preparing to care for potential patients and protect firefighters and EMS personnel from exposures, please know that the IAFC stands with you and is ready to help. In addition to continuously updating the Coronavirus resources page, the IAFC Coronavirus Task Force held their first meeting last week. Over the next few months, the Task Force will be monitoring COVID-19 and developing recommendations for ways that fire departments can protect their members while continuing to serve their communities. IAFC.ORG Minnesota: Alexandria firefighters describe epic blaze that destroyed big chunk of downtown When the call came across the pagers, there was something in the dispatcher's voice that signaled it was serious. "Her voice sounded distressed." "I knew I had to put on real clothes for this one." "You could tell the panic in the page." "We could hear it, the seriousness, but the average person probably wouldn't." When firefighters respond, they do so because it is their job. It's what they signed up for and what they trained for. They don't do it for pats on the back or recognition. So it wasn't easy to find firefighters willing to sit down and talk about their experiences in fighting the Feb. 25 fire that destroyed a portion of historic downtown Alexandria. However, with just a little bit of convincing, seven members of the Alexandria Fire Department were willing to chat about that day – the day that destroyed four buildings, wiped out six businesses and displaced more than 20 residents.
