2 children dead after fire engulfs Galveston home, firefighters say VIDEO: Two children died at the hospital after a fire broke out inside a two-story home in Galveston early Saturday, firefighters said. According to Galveston Assistant Chief R. Pearson, over 20 firefighters responded at around 2:35 a.m. at the intersection of 21st Street and Avenue K. A father and two children were inside. Fire Chief Olsen said the father woke up and saw heavy smoke, then ran out as soon as firefighters arrived. Warren Mies, a navy veteran who lives behind the home told KPRC 2's Rilwan Balogun that his neighbor banged on his door alerting him to the fire. He and his friends, who are Army veterans, attempted to crawl inside to rescue the children, but authorities at the scene told them to step back. KPRC-TV NBC 2 HOUSTON Bryan Murff named new Panola County fire marshal Panola County Constable Bryan Muff has been appointed as the new Panola County fire marshal/emergency management coordinator, effective May 1. Commissioners approved the measure at their Tuesday meeting. The motion was made by County Judge David Anderson and seconded by Pct. 4 Commissioner Dale LaGrone. "He's very qualified," Judge Anderson said following the meeting. The court had previously approved the creation of the position back in March as a means to improve fire services in the county. "It would be a benefit to help all fire departments," said Judge Anderson, noting that the fire marshal will assist the seven volunteer fire departments in the county and also help with any investigation of fires. THE PANOLA WATCHMAN - METERED SITE Bullard Junior Firefighters claim 1st place in EMS The Junior Firefighters of Bullard recently came home champions after traveling to Dallas and competing in multiple areas of fire and rescue scenarios. At the competition, which is known as the Junior Fire Games, they competed against multiple other Junior Fire Departments in five different areas of rescue scenarios and took home the first place title for the EMS category. They are a team of 14-17-year-olds from surrounding areas and take on real roles that first responders carry and apply them to hypothetical emergency situations that will prepare them for life in the field. "It's really satisfying to know that I can and I am capable, obviously I'm a kid, we still have the ability to react in some ways to train and to be able to save lives," said Devin Nelson, PIO for Bullard Junior Fire Department. KETK-TV NBC 56 JACKSONVILLE Firefighters rescue residents from San Antonio apartment fire Residents at a west-side apartment complex were rescued from a fire Sunday morning, according to fire crews. The fire broke out at around 1:47 a.m., at the Medio Springs Apartment Homes located at 1530 Marbach Oaks. Upon arrival, fire crews saw a first floor unit in flames and immediately evacuated the residents from the building. Firefighters searched each apartment to make sure everyone made it out safe from the fire, according to authorities. Fire crews were able to quickly control the flames. As a result of the flames, two units were affected and management was notified to assist the residents of those units. Thankfully, crews said no one was injured. The cause of the fire is under investigation. WOAI-TV NBC/CW 4 SAN ANTONIO French Bulldog rescued from Harris County house fire caused by electric wheelchair PHOTOS: Firefighters rescued a dog from a house fire in the Cypress Creek Lakes subdivision, officials say. At about 4:18 p.m., the Cy-Fair Fire Department responded to a house fire at the 10000 Block of Beacon Crossing Lane. Upon arrival, firefighters say they found fire coming from the garage, with an extension to the attic. Firefighters made entry and rescued a French Bulldog that was trapped inside. The dog is reported to be in good condition and was reunited with its owner, CFFD says. Officials say a charging electric wheelchair in the garage caused the fire. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON K-9 Bruno, San Antonio Fire's newest arson detective, seen on the job after vacant home goes up in flames The San Antonio Fire Department's newest arson detective is on the job. K-9 Bruno was on scene early Saturday morning in the 100 block of Dashiell Street, across the street from the Alamodome. Firefighters were called out just after 5 a.m., and they found a vacant home that had been boarded up, fully involved in flames. They made quick work of it, knocking the fire down in just over 10 minutes. Tax records indicate the home was built in 1905, but like many buildings in the area, it has been under renovation. In March, there were a series of suspicious fires in the area that involved homes being remodeled, or under construction. Arson investigators are looking for causes. With the previous fires, they have said the damage is so complete, they have not been able to pinpoint what started the fires, but the investigation continues. 27 different agencies respond to large fire at New Hampshire resort VIDEO: Emergency crews from 27 different agencies responded to a large fire at the Red Jacket Mountain View Resort Saturday afternoon. Photos and videos shared by people in the area showed smoke and flames coming out of rooms on the second and third floors. The Chief of the North Conway Fire Department says there were four injuries, two people at the resort and two firefighters. None of the injuries are considered to be serious. The Chief also shared with WMTW News 8 that 75 rooms were destroyed. Hotel staff organized buses to bring residents to other hotels in the area, as the crews worked and began to assess the damage. The center section housing the lobby area has water damage, but the left third of the building is undamaged. WMTW-TV ABC 8 POLAND SPRING Related: Sprinkler system was not in section of building where massive hotel fire started 'It's absolutely a miracle': First responders give update about EF-3 tornado damage in Kansas Everywhere you go just south of the Andover Road and US Highway 400 intersection in Andover you see the same thing. Houses destroyed and debris everywhere. That is what is left in wake of a EF-3 tornado that hit the southeastern part of the city Friday night, leaving a swath of destruction. During a news conference Saturday at 4:30, just under 24 hours since the twister first touched down, first responders had several updates on the status of the city. Andover Fire Chief Chad Russell putting it plainly, "We do have significant property damage in some of the neighborhoods throughout the community." One of several points the first responders hit on was a warning to residents returning to their homes. Chief Russell says many of them might not be stable right now. KAKE-TV ABC 10 WICHITA Female firefighters make strides in one Georgia city VIDEO: Two years ago, the Decatur Fire Department made a name for itself when it became the first and only fire department in the country to hold an all-female command. Today, they continue to hold that title, and last weekend the department celebrated a personal stride on Instagram when every one of their responding fire units had a woman as their fire apparatus operator. A fire apparatus operator is one of the most vital positions when out in the field. They operate and drive the fire truck and are in charge of all of the equipment at the scene of an incident. This includes carrying and unloading the ladder, providing water through hydrants and hose lines, supervising personnel and more. Fire Inspector Lashawna Bussey knows this job well as she was one of the apparatus operators on call during this milestone. WXIA-TV NBC 11 ATLANTA How Arkansas first responders train for hiking rescues VIDEO: Pinnacle Mountain State Park has more than 22 miles of trails and more than 14 miles of mountain bike trail-- along with those trails come some emergencies. "Here at Pinnacle Mountain State Park, we do handle some of the highest numbers of emergency services calls of any state park," Cale Davenport, Assistant Superintendent for Pinnacle Mountain State Park said. Those calls could range from a number of things spanning from heat exhaustion to something more extreme like what happened Tuesday night. "A young man was attempting to ride a mountain bike in an area undesignated. It was not one of our mountain bike trails," said Davenport. That 17-year-old, according to Davenport, entered through the Rocky Valley Trail. After leaving the hiking trail not intended for mountain bikes, the teen crashed and fell, plunging 30 feet onto bare rock. KTHV-TV CBS 11 LITTLE ROCK An unseen hazard: Indiana to remove toxic firefighting foam, but contamination persists In the early 1980s, Indianapolis firefighter Tom Hanify was part of a training exercise using foam spray to put out a controlled house fire. After Hanify and the crew contained the blaze, they stuck around just to play in the foam. He said that at the time, the firefighters were just having fun. Now, looking back, there was nothing funny about it. That's because Hanify now realizes that foam contained per-and-polyfluoroalkyl, "forever" chemicals that don't break down and build up in the human body. Recent research has linked it to at least eight different kinds of cancer. "We were literally playing with this stuff and had no clue what we were doing," said Hanify, who today serves as president of the Professional Fire Fighters Union of Indiana. It was the same story for nearly every Indiana fire department that used what is known as aqueous film-forming foam over the next four decades. JEFFERSONVILLE NEWS & TRIBUNE PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
