Harris County Fire Marshal's Office investigators were among those called to a reported apartment fire along Kuykendahl Road, where they said a person suffered severe burns Friday evening. The fire marshal's office said it's assisting Little York Fire Department at the scene in the 13100 block of Kuykendahl, between Ella and Brundage. HCFMO added that a second person was also hospitalized for smoke inhalation. The cause of the apparent fire is under investigation. The Harris County Precinct 4 Constable's Office provided additional but preliminary information. In a tweet, the constable's office said deputies responded to the Vanderbilt Apartments in reference to an in-progress call. Based on a caller, a female victim was on the ground, not breathing, and severely burned, the tweet read.

VIDEO: The Tyler Fire Department held their annual banquet and awards event, in which firefighters were recognized for helping save lives while on duty. Randy Lee is the deputy fire marshal for the Tyler Fire Department, and he said most firefighters are extremely humble about the work they do. "You know, most firefighters don't want any limelight. They don't want any recognition. They actually don't want these awards, so you have to make them take it, more or less. They feel like it's just part of their calling, and part of their duty is to do what they do, put their life on the line and to save lives, that's what firefighters do," said Lee. The banquet began with the national anthem, prayers and dinner, then continued with a night of awards.

Officials with the Amarillo Fire Department released information regarding an afternoon second-alarm fire at West Texas Golf Cars resulting in an estimated $1 million in damage. Officials with AFD detailed that crews responded after multiple reports of fire and smoke and when Engine 13 arrived at the scene they called for a second alarm response due to the amount of smoke. According to AFD, at around 12:35 p.m. on May 13, Engine 12 arrived first to find 20 to 30 golf carts heavily involved in smoke. Officials said downed power lines delayed the crews' access to the fire making it hard to get water to the fire. AFD said Xcel responded to shut off the power and firefighters were able to then bring the fire under control at around 1:29 p.m. Officials said a total of eight units responded to the fire.

PHOTO: Over 65 years ago, the San Marcos Fire Department (SMFD) said its farewells to Old Faithful, the first motorized fire truck for San Marcos. Now, she has been donated back to the SMFD, giving the opportunity for current and former employees from years past to appreciate and become more knowledgeable on an artifact that shaped the SMFD into what it is today. Even though Old Faithful was not physically seen in action by many of the current and former living SMFD staff members, most are ecstatic to see her in person and see what the future holds for her. Jack Mutschlechner, the former lieutenant for the SMFD for over 30 years, also never got the opportunity to see Old Faithful, but he's excited to see her to appreciate his love for old motor vehicles and their classy styles.

A massive fire erupted in a Pompano Beach apartment building overnight. Residents of the Royal Atlantic Apartments, at 110 NW 7th Avenue, said they woke to fire alarms blaring around 2 a.m. and heard people screaming. Arriving firefighters were met with flames shooting through the roof and thick smoke coming from one the units. Residents said it was terrifying as they made their way to safety. "It was hectic and scary. It was just black smoke, we could barely see anything. We had to use our phone lights to run down the stairs and other people's flashlights to run down the stairs. It was terrible, a few of us have asthma, it was terrifying, the worst experience ever" said Phylicia Eubanks. Firefighters were able to quickly contain the blaze.

Beginning in 2025, a fire suppressant containing so-called forever chemicals that never break down in the environment will be prohibited from manufacture, sale and distribution in Illinois -- and suburban fire departments are getting ready for the ban. Two chemical products are at the center of the issue. Aqueous film forming foam is used at industrial facilities and airports, and by fire departments to extinguish flammable liquid fires such as fuel fires. The foam contains PFAS, the acronym for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances that are widely used in commercial and consumer products. Due to long-standing environmental and health concerns about PFAS, and thanks to the emergence of alternatives that don't contain them, the foam is slowly being phased out.

VIDEO: In Mid-City L.A., Station 68 is home to two very special firefighters, who are also mothers and inspiring a new generation of first responders. At Station 68, one of the busier stations in Los Angeles, you'll find Tanya Crabbe and Jessica Jackson – women (and mothers) who have been firefighters for 15 and 20 years respectively. They love their job and are integral in the response and care provided to the community. It is not for everyone, and they know that. But with such a small percentage of women in the LAFD – just 3.5% of the total LAFD workforce – there is certainly room to grow. And thanks to the LAFD Girls Camp, girls between the ages of 10 to 18 can see how they might play a part in the future of firefighting.

In the second half of the 19th century, after the conclusion of the Civil War and into the 20th century, there was a major influx of immigrants looking for work, as well as advances in technology. This boom happened faster than safety measures like labor laws and fire codes could advance to anything like what we have today. As a result, many of the most catastrophic fires and explosions in American history happened. To identify the deadliest fires and explosions in U.S. history, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed data on fire casualties from the National Fire Protection Association. Fires and explosions were ranked on an estimated number of deaths. (It is important to note that death estimates for these disasters may sometimes vary by source.) Dates, casualty estimates, and locations came from NFPA.
