2 Cleveland residents, 3 firefighters rescued from high water currents At around 4 a.m. Saturday morning, Cleveland Fire Department responded to a call for a water rescue on Low Bridge Water Crossing Road. The call was related to two men, one of whom was elderly, whose vehicle was swept to a nearby tree line as they attempted to cross the East Fork of the San Jacinto River. Luckily, a nearby good Samaritan was able to tie the vehicle to a utility pole while the men waited for help to arrive. With waters too intense for an inflatable rescue boat, Cleveland FD requested a more powerful airboat from Needham FD. The vessel arrived and was launched into the rapidly rising currents. As the rescuers approached the stranded vehicle, the rear of their boat was pulled by currents, and it quickly began to take on water and also became trapped. KPRC-TV NBC 2 HOUSTON Three dogs and one cat saved from San Antonio house fire Three dogs and one cat were saved by fire crews from an electrical fire on the South Side. Around 6:25 p.m. on Saturday, firefighters responded to calls of a house fire near the corner of East Baetz Boulevard and Pleasanton Road on the South Side. Crews were able to extinguish the fire in the back of the home, which they say produced smoke all throughout the house. Battalion Chief Russel Johnson said the fire originated from an air conditioning unit at the back of the home and appeared to be an electrical issue from the overloaded A.C. Crews were able to successfully save three dogs and a cat from the fire, which were reportedly unharmed. Officials encourage homeowners and renters to make sure their home has smoke detectors, and those without smoke detectors can call 211 to have them installed for free by the San Antonio Fire Department. KABB-TV FOX 29 SAN ANTONIO Houston Fire Department: 1 dead from carbon monoxide poisoning as people turn to generators amid ongoing power outages One person died from carbon monoxide poisoning amid the ongoing outages and recovery from last week's storm, Houston Fire Department Chief Sam Peña said. Peña was among the officials giving updates Sunday as residents without power eagerly look to have theirs restored. Some places aren't expected to be restored until Wednesday, according to an outage tracker map from CenterPoint Energy. The ongoing outages mean that people might turn to portable generators, especially as humidity this week could make it feel like it's 100 degrees outside and people are without air conditioning. Harris County officials also said over the weekend that the number of calls for carbon monoxide has increased, responding to 44 in one day. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

People living near the tank battery fire have been told to keep their doors and windows shut, as well as their air conditioners off. KOCO-TV ABC 5 OKLAHOMA CITY What is hydroxocobalamin? The drug that likely saved FDNY firefighter who collapsed in burning home VIDEO: Officials credited a smoke inhalation drug for likely saving the life of a New York City firefighter who fell unconscious and stopped breathing while battling a house blaze Friday. The firefighter was one of three injured during the response in the Bronx. All are expected to recover, Mayor Eric Adams and Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh said at an evening news conference. John Hodgens, the FDNY's chief of department, said the firefighter was inside the house operating a hose when he began having problems breathing. He collapsed and was pulled from the building by other first responders, who put him on a sidewalk and started CPR, Hodgens said. Emergency medical workers also gave the firefighter the drug hydroxocobalamin, which combats the effects of cyanide poisoning that can result from smoke inhalation. WNBC-TV NBC 4 NEW YORK CITY Driver of fleeing vehicle causes fiery crash involving ambulance and life-threatening injuries in Florida VIDEOS/PHOTOS: At approximately 2:44 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2024, a Pinellas County Sheriff's Office (PCSO) deputy attempted a traffic stop on a 2014 BMW X1 for a traffic violation on Ulmerton Road near Railroad Avenue. The driver, 41-year-old Willie Lee Daniels, initially stopped for deputies but quickly conducted a U-turn and fled the traffic stop at a high rate of speed. Daniels fled, traveling north on Seminole Boulevard from Ulmerton Road. According to PCSO, the deputy did not pursue Daniels. He deactivated his lights and sirens and resumed normal driving. The vehicle failure to yield and flee the scene, prompted multiple deputies to track the vehicle. The PCSO helicopter "Eagle" was dispatched to assist in tracking the fleeing vehicle. IONTB EMS Week at 50: Honoring the Past While Looking at the Future Half a century ago, a presidential proclamation called on the nation to support efforts to improve emergency medical care across the country. It also established the first national EMS Week, a tradition we proudly continue today. Much has changed since 1974, yet there is still much we can learn from those trailblazing professionals who helped EMS evolve into the sophisticated branch of medicine it is today. Their dedication, commitment and sacrifice inspire us to take bold steps of our own, to continue to seek out ways to better serve our patients and our communities. This year, we celebrate EMS Week by honoring our past—by taking a pause to recognize the contributions of each generation, the people who dreamed that we could save more lives and have less suffering, and then found ways to make it happen.
