Crowd surge kills at least 8 at Houston music festival The crowd at a Houston music festival suddenly surged toward the stage during a performance by rapper Travis Scott, squeezing fans so tightly together that they could not breathe or move their arms and killing eight people in the chaos. The pandemonium unfolded Friday evening at Astroworld, a sold-out, two-day event in NRG Park with an estimated 50,000 people in attendance. As a timer clicked down to the start of the performance, the crowd pushed forward. "As soon as he jumped out on the stage, it was like an energy took over and everything went haywire," concertgoer Niaara Goods said. "All of a sudden, your ribs are being crushed. You have someone's arm in your neck. You're trying to breathe, but you can't." Goods said she was so desperate to get out that she bit a man on the shoulder to get him to move. Dozens of people showed up to welcome him home. "It was very overwhelming to see Donald drive through," Austin Bank worker Tara Hoot said. "It brought tears to my eyes" Firemen who work with the chief say he's been missed and the department isn't the same without his big personality. Fireman James Sanchez organized fundraisers during the Chief's leave and it was his idea to put on the welcome home event. "He's one of a kind, he'll let you know if you do wrong, and he's there for you if you do bad," said Fireman James Sanchez. Alto Fire Department and UT Health showed up to support and block the roadways for the Chief's homecoming as he rode by. He waved and cried and the community cheered him on. KETK-TV NBC 56 JACKSONVILLE 2 Fatal Fires Reported Across Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Area Two fatal fires were reported in the metroplex Sunday morning, one in Dallas and another in Fort Worth. The Dallas fire, which happened at the Eleven-600 Apartments in northeast Dallas on Audelia Road around 4 a.m., killed a man and a dog, fire officials said. Dallas Fire-Rescue firefighters arrived at the scene and saw fire coming from the roof of one of the buildings at the two-story apartment complex. As they were suppressing the fire, officials found the bodies of a man and a dog in a second-floor apartment, DFR said. There were 16 apartments in the building where the fire started, officials said. Only three apartments took the brunt of the fire damage, but more were impacted by smoke, water damage and potential loss of power, officials said. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS Man smoking on his bed leads to his apartment catching fire, San Antonio Fire Department says San Antonio firefighters worked quickly to put out a fire in a man's apartment after his bed caught fire while he was smoking on it, fire officials say. The fire happened around 1:20 a.m. early Sunday morning at the Springvale Manor Apartment homes, located at the 1300 block of Springvale Dr. According to the San Antonio Fire Department's (SAFD) Battalion Chief, an elderly man was smoking on his bed when at some point it caught fire. The fire quickly spread throughout the man's room. Fire crews were able to quickly extinguish the flames and contain the fire to his apartment. The residents throughout the building were evacuated while crews worked to put out the fire. The Red Cross was notified to help the man and the residents below the apartment who were displaced by the fire. KABB-TV FOX 29 SAN ANTONIO Volunteer firefighters battle grass fire south of Lubbock Volunteer firefighters battled a large grass fire just south of Lubbock Sunday afternoon. The fire was reported in the area of County Road 7700 in Woodrow. The Woodrow Volunteer Fire Department and the Wolfforth Volunteer Fire Department worked to extinguish the blaze. An EverythingLubbock.com photographer said the fire appeared to have burned in what was described as a "junk yard." A nearby horse stable was threatened, but firefighters were able prevent it from catching on fire. The amount of damage sustained was unknown at this time, and no injuries had been reported. The smoke plume from the grass fire was visible several miles away during the 3:00 hour. Lubbock County Sheriff's Office deputies diverted traffic and onlookers away from the area. KAMC-TV ABC 28 LUBBOCK Greenpeace pays $58K to Harris County first responders for 2019 Fred Hartman Bridge takeover Greenpeace is paying more than $58,000 in criminal restitution to first responders for the 2019 "takeover" of the Fred Hartman Bridge. Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced Friday that the payment is part of a plea agreement with 25 defendants who protested on the bridge and forced the closure of the Port of Houston for approximately 24 hours in September 2019. "Regardless of motive, it is illegal to risk the lives of law enforcement and ordinary people who must drive the bridge. They wasted the time of police officers and firefighters, who potentially could have been used to respond to real emergencies," Ogg said. As part of the agreement, the 11 people who repelled off the bridge in 2019 and the 14 people who helped them including those acting as "spotters," admitted to their guilt to the charge of Obstructing a Highway. Person Dead in New Hampshire Fire; Firefighter Among 2 Taken to Hospital A person died in a fire that burned a building in Manchester, New Hampshire, Saturday while several more people were rescued, officials said. A firefighter was burned and had to be flown to Boston for treatment, Manchester Fire Chief Andy Parent said. Another person was also taken by helicopter to a Boston hospital for medical treatment. The heavy fire, raging on three floors of an apartment building on Dutton Street, was reported about 6:10 p.m., Parent said. Five people were rescued by a ladder on the third floor of the building -- there were multiple people hanging out of windows on that floor -- and another person was rescued from a second-floor porch. Among those saved was a baby. Video shows a firefighter clutching the baby tightly, descending down a ladder to safety. WBTS-TV NBC 10 BOSTON Related YouTube Video: Incredible baby rescue video during Manchester fatal fire First female battalion chief in North Carolina city leads diversity conference in Charlotte Charlotte-Mecklenburg is hosting its second annual diversity, equity and inclusion conference, and the opening speaker is no stranger to breaking barriers. Synthia Kearney never remembers seeing a female firefighter when she was growing up, but today she is the first female battalion chief for the Gastonia Fire Department. Kearney has had a remarkable journey to where she is today. After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, she was a special agent with the United States Secret Service for four years before transferring to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. "After my second daughter was born I became a stay at home mom for three years," she said. "When I financially had to go back to work I decided to do what I had always wanted to do and at 35 years old, I applied and passed the physical agility test and got hired as a Gastonia Firefighter." WSOC-TV ABC 9 CHARLOTTE The intense fire that destroyed 7 Kentucky warehouses in 1996 VIDEO: It started like any other November day at the Heaven Hill Distillery in Bardstown until disaster struck in 1996 and a wooden warehouse went up in flames. WHAS11's Sky11 chopper raced to the scene as smoke billowed above. Water did little in the fight against burning bourbon and within minutes, the first warehouse was a total loss. First responders put their focus on other buildings, but the flames were too strong, and the weather conditions were worsening. WHAS11 reporter George Sells was at the scene, frantically calling Melissa Swan in the newsroom. "Just have to stand back and watch it burn. At this point, there's absolutely nothing they can do as this rain comes in and these heavy winds blowing. They're gusting over 40 miles an hour now," he described. WHAS-TV ABC 11 LOUISVILLE Number of firefighters in Utah seeking mental health support doubles Mental health continues to be a growing concern among first responders. Molly Doyle never knows when that call is going to come. None of them do. It's the nature of being a firefighter. "My job is to drive the engine to whatever call that is," said Doyle, who is a firefighter with the Unified Fire Authority. Although they are called firefighters, most of the calls that come to the UFA are now medical calls. Crews are trained to fight fires as well as offer emergency medical service. "People call us on their worst day," said Doyle. Because of all those calls, though, Doyle has also been getting more calls lately from her colleagues. That's because she is on UFA's peer support team. "I think asking for help is really difficult for a lot of us," she said. "There's a concern or a stigma that it shows we can't solve all the problems, and we're the type of people who got into this to help others and solve problems." KSL-TV NBC 5 SALT LAKE CITY What is a crowd surge? Crushing deaths at events like Astroworld in Texas have long history The crowd deaths at a Houston music festival added even more names to the long list of people who have been crushed at a major event. Tragedies like the one Friday night at the Astroworld Music Festival have been happening for a long time. In 1979, 11 people died in a scramble to enter a Cincinnati, Ohio, concert by The Who. At the Hillsborough soccer stadium in England, a human crush in 1989 led to nearly 100 deaths. In 2015, a collision of two crowds at the hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia caused more than 2,400 deaths, based on an Associated Press count of media reports and officials' comments. Now that more people are heading out of their homes and back into crowds after many months of being cooped up because of the pandemic, the risks are rising again.
