VIDEOS: The Houston Fire Department said a plastic recycling plant north of downtown caught fire Saturday morning. The fire has since been contained. A massive black smoke plume could be seen from the Eastex Freeway near I-10. The plant is located on Semmes Street, which is off the Eastex Freeway feeder road. HFD first posted about the fire at 9:37 a.m. HFD said about 50 people were evacuated from the plant and that air and water quality are within a safe range. There were no reports of injuries to civilians or firefighters. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON VIDEO: A small plane crashed into a car Saturday afternoon after making an emergency landing in McKinney, city officials said. The pilot, who flew from Midland and was trying to make the emergency landing at Aero County Airport, was unable to stop the plane at the end of the runway, officials added. It then went through a fence and onto eastbound Virginia Parkway, where it collided into a car driving by. Jack Schneider was working nearby and captured the entire accident on his phone. "I saw the airplane coming down the runway quickly and I knew that he wasn't gonna have time to stop. It was clearly going too fast, the tires were smoking… So I quickly pulled out my phone because I could tell something was about to happen," said Schneider. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS A residential structure fire occurred overnight in the 3600 block of Avenue S, according to the Lubbock Fire Rescue. LFR said crews received a call for a possible structure fire just before 2:00 a.m. on Monday. According to LFR, the call stated that a fire was visible near the back of the house. When fire crews arrived at the scene, heavy fire conditions were coming from the rear structure, said LFR. The fire was put out and no injuries were reported. The American Red Cross was contacted to assist with the displaced occupants, said LFR. LFR's Fire Marshal's office will be investigating the cause of the fire. KLBK-TV CBS 13 LUBBOCK VIDEO: A Tesla caught fire at a home in Plano early Friday morning. The incident happened shortly after midnight in the 2700 block of Sacred Path Road, near Preston Road and Tulane Drive. Officials said the fire started in the garage. The car's owner told WFAA that they heard a hissing sound coming from the battery, which was installed Thursday. When the owner checked the car, flames were shooting from the battery and they called 9-1-1. Firefighters responded and were able to put a tarp over the vehicle and pull it into the street, where they worked on fully extinguishing the fire. "The guys were quick thinking. Once they put the tarp on the car and were able to contain the fire underneath that tarp, they quickly hook some tow chains underneath and drag it using one of our battalions," said Plano Fire Lt. Daniel Daly. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS |

Gov. Gavin Newsom proclaimed a State of Emergency in Los Angeles County Saturday night to help facilitate cleanup and repairs after a massive storage yard fire shut down portion of the 10 Freeway in both directions. The fire was first reported at 12:22 a.m. in the 1700 block of East 14th Street, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. It would eventually go on to burn 8 acres - the equivalent of six football fields. The first storage yard was 40,000-square-feet and was fully involved with flames that engulfed multiple trailers, the Fire Department said. The flames spread to a storage yard of similar size between Lawrence and Elwood streets, and consumed a fire engine that became stuck in their path. Several civilian vehicles were also destroyed by the inferno. KABC-TV ABC 7 LOS ANGELES VIDEO: Family and friends said FDNY Firefighter Billy Moon had the biggest heart. Thursday night, his widow, two young children and parents got to hear that heart again in the chest of the man who received it. Moon died after falling 20 feet during a training exercise in Brooklyn in December 2022. His wife Kristina Moon transferred him to LiveOnNY's Donor Care Unit at NYU Langone Health. Five of Moon's organs were transplanted into recipients. Thursday night, Moon's family got to meet 63-year-old Richard Grehl. He received Moon's heart just 10 days after going on the donor list. "I'm Rich, in more ways than one, thank you so much," he said when meeting Moon's widow. Kristina Moon used a stethoscope to hear her husband's heart in Grehl. "He was passionate. The passion comes from the heart, so to hear that heart is still beating is very emotional," Kristina Moon said. WPIX-TV CW 11 NEW YORK CITY VIDEO: A small plane crashed into a car Saturday afternoon after making an emergency landing in McKinney, city officials said. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS Ryan Griffin thinks he may be just a little bit of an adrenaline junkie. Griffin's job as a driver engineer for the Johnson City Fire Department seems to lend itself to the idea. "Fighting fire itself is definitely an adrenaline rush," Griffin said. "I don't wish a fire on anybody, but if there is a fire, I want to be there putting it out." Griffin joined the JCFD around 10 years ago, but his plan wasn't always to be a firefighter. Griffin's father had been a firefighter in Illinois, where Griffin is originally from, but he first decided to take a different path. "I grew up around it," Griffin said. "I always thought it was really cool, but I went off to college and got a degree in sports and recreation management and worked in that field for several years." Griffin worked in his chosen field for a while before eventually deciding to become a firefighter. KINGSPORT TIMES NEWS - METERED SITE |
