| Celebrating IAFC's 150th Anniversary: A Legacy of Leadership in Fire and Emergency Services Author: John Butler, IAFC President & Fire Chief, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue As we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), I would like to reflect upon its rich history and the vital role of leadership within the fire and emergency services. We can all take inspiration from the iconic figures who have shaped our profession. Additionally, I will recommend three key leadership takeaways that you can draw from our history and experiences, and encourage you to remain steadfast in our mission to protect and save lives and property. Achieving this will ensure that the fire and emergency services community remains a beacon of service, courage, and selflessness for generations to come. read more |

Structure fire stirs concerns in south Abilene neighborhood VIDEO/PHOTOS: The Abilene Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 800 block of Elm Street in South Abilene Friday afternoon. Crews reported finding a backyard shed fully involved upon arrival. While no injuries were sustained, the property did not go without damage, and residents said a fire like this has been an ongoing concern. "I was actually at work, and a friend of mine was driving by and was like, ‘Hey, I think your old neighborhood is going up in flames.' And I'm like, ‘What do you mean my old neighborhood? My mother is still in this area,'" said Carolyn Botero, the daughter of a woman who lives just a few homes down from the fire. An AFD press release states that an improperly extinguished cigarette was found to be the cause of the blaze. KTAB-TV CBS 32 ABILENE ‘Live like Jake': Over a hundred gather to remember and honor late Jarrell firefighter VIDEO: Firefighters across central Texas led a procession from Jarrell to Lorena to honor Jacob ‘Jake' Owen, who passed away from brain cancer earlier this month. Known as Jake to those closest, Owen was a young firefighter and engineer for Jarrell fire and rescue. Over a hundred people showed up to say their goodbyes to the late hero, and fire chief Ron Stewart shares how Owen was an honorable man filled with compassion. "He was always smiling," Stewart remembers, "always checking on others to see how they were doing." The community present emphasized the phrase, 'Live like Jake,' to honor Owen and remind everyone to learn from his kindness and bravery. "Follow the example he set, you know, courage, smiling, friends with everybody, never having anything bad to say about anybody, finding the good, so that other people can learn who he was and hopefully live by his example." KWTX-TV CBS 10 WACO Tyler man arrested for arson in house fire Tyler firefighters battled a Sunday evening house fire that officials say may have been started due to arson. Emergency crews were dispatched to a residence on Broadway Ave. around 8:35 p.m. Sunday, with an advisory that two people may be in the house. When they arrived on scene, firefighters said they found one person in the house and no other occupants in the house. Damage to the residence was found mostly in the interior and attic. However, as for the fire's origin, Tyler Fire Marshal Joey Hooton believes that arson may have played a role. Kenneth Lee Johnson, 59, of Tyler, was arrested on a charge of reckless arson and booked into the Smith County Jail with a $50,000 bond. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER Firefighters put out 3-alarm house fire in north Dallas Dallas Fire Rescue says a 3-alarm fire firefighters have been working to extinguish Sunday evening at a home in North Dallas has been brought under control. Officials say DFR units were assigned to a call for a fire at the home at about 5:55 p.m. in the 5800 block of Westgrove Drive. All of the house's occupants were evacuated prior to firefighters arriving, officials said. Attack teams deployed hard lines and entered to extinguish the flames. A short time later, a second alarm response was requested as the fire was already in advanced stages. Command then ordered everyone out of the house and began fighting the fire defensively. Since that time, the fire escalated to a 3-alarm response, which resulted in the dispatch of between 70 and 80 firefighters as well as 15 heavy apparatus, officials said.
