Massive blaze torches more than 70 vehicles at farm parking lot in Temple VIDEO: A fire Saturday afternoon in the parking lot of The Robinson Family Farm in Temple torched more than 70 vehicles. The Temple Fire & Rescue Department responded to the blaze at around 1 p.m. Oct. 15. Multiple fire departments from Little River Academy, Troy, Rogers, Salado, Holland, Bartlett and Belton were called to assist. The first units to arrive found approximately 10 cars on fire in the pasture area used for parking but due to the numbers of cars involved, the East Side Strike Team was called to bring in additional resources. Fire crews were able to move some of the cars out of the way of the flames but approximately 73 cars were destroyed. According to the owner of the farm, no injuries were reported and no one required hospitalization. KWTX-TV CBS 10 WACO Port Arthur Fire Chief: First responders more likely to die by suicide than on duty; mental health help crucial As Port Arthur Fire Chief Greg Benson stood at the front of the room, a series of random numbers were listed on a screen behind him — 113, 116, 96, 127. "Does anyone want to guess what these numbers mean?" he asked the crowd. Answers varied. Were they tied to phone numbers? Possibly zip codes? After he hit the next slide, audible gasps filled the room. In 2020, 113 police officers died in the line of duty, and 116 died by suicide. That same year, 96 firefighters died in the line of duty, and 127 committed suicide. "They'll tell you this is a very common thing," he said as he spoke in a meeting room at the Port Arthur Public Library. "It's more likely that you'll die in the line of duty. It's all over the place and unfortunately the reality of it is that it happens on a weekly — sometimes almost daily — basis." Benson spoke to bring recognition to mental health needs among first responders. THE PORT ARTHUR NEWS - METERED SITE Four families without homes after fire destroys apartments in northwest Houston, fire department says At least eight people were displaced after a fire destroyed several apartment units in northwest Houston, according to the Houston Fire Department. Four units at the Oakwood Apartments were damaged in the fire, according to HFD officials. Denise Rhodes, a building resident, said she returned home from the grocery store when the fire broke out. "(I) just got home from grocery shopping at Walmart, was getting all my stuff in, and was told to bring out a bucket of water that the apartment upstairs was on fire," Rhodes recalled. "We kept trying to throw water on it, got a hose on it, still wasn't extinguishing at all, top of the roof was on fire." HFD crews arrived shortly after 4 p.m. and were able to get control of the fire within about 15 minutes, but there were some challenges. The fire led to many other residents being displaced. John Lopez, 39, is charged with arson habitation, a first-degree felony, according to an arrest affidavit. He was arrested Saturday in connection with a large fire that ripped through a home with at least seven apartment units on Friday afternoon, in the 800 block of Quincy Street. Police said Lopez was evicted from his apartment inside of the home earlier in the day by Bexar County Constables. He then went to the back side of the home and returned moments later with no container in hand, police said. He retired from the department last year, but is still part of the Albuquerque Retirees Association, and works with the local firefighters union. "I've lived here my whole life, so I've always wanted to work for Albuquerque," said Knight. And he's grown to love to document the work too. He's the face behind "afdfirewire" on Instagram.
