Video captures apartment fire San Antonio Fire Department believes may have been intentionally set VIDEO: Neighbors and first responders rushed to get residents out of their homes at an apartment complex on the city's Southeast Side. Firefighters say they have reason to believe someone ignited a fire on a first floor apartment balcony Saturday morning. Fire units were called out to Pecan Valley Golf Club Apartments located in the 5000 block of Pecan Grove around 7 a.m. Three families, including five adults and two children, will no longer be able to live under the same roof. Battalion Chief Connie Hall says the building is not an entire loss. However, two units were severely damaged and electricity has been cut off to the building. Hall says the fire started in Shindarra Brown's balcony near her BBQ pit. Brown was asleep when she realized something was wrong. "I jumped out of bed because I heard the glass (break) and smelt smoke," Brown said. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO New Waco Fire Station keeps neighborhood growing If you live in Waco's Kendrick neighborhood, you should feel just a little safer these days. The city's newest fire station opened there this weekend, a station designed to run on a minimum staff. But now, thanks to a federal grant, Fire Station 5 will have a full complement of firefighters, putting South Waco in a position for further growth. United States Senator John Cornyn, Republican of Texas, arrived at Waco's brand new fire station 5 this weekend, with a gift. A flag flown over the Capitol. It makes a fitting start for this station, serving the fastest-growing part of town. "There was a study done, back in 2015, of where our future fire station would be located. and we found this area. It really covers the South area of Waco," said Waco Fire Chief Bobby Tatum. KXXV-TV ABC 25 WACO 'It was just another day,' Armstrong County's first all female-fire-crew responded Wednesday Wednesday, Armstrong County Fire Departments posted that their first all female-fire-crew responded to a fire in their own truck. The crew was dispatched to a grass fire. Being a volunteer fire department, whoever is in the area and available when a fire breaks out reports to the scene. In this case, it happened to be two of the four women in the department. "I noticed that there were two women on one truck and they were the only ones on that truck so I announced over the radio that ‘hey guys this is the first time in Claude history that I've seen an all-woman truck on a fire scene," said Claude Fire Chief Dwayne Holt. The two women who were operating the truck say they didn't even pay any attention to the fact they were making history. It was just like any other day. KFDA-TV NEWSCHANNEL 10 Pleasant Grove Volunteer Fire Chief: Open house gives public a chance to see their tax dollars at work VIDEO: Children firing the siren of a fire truck, hot dogs and a raffle: the Pleasant Grove Volunteer Fire Department put out the welcome mat to the community during a gray, rainy Saturday afternoon. Despite the weather, the community turned out to get a look at their fire department, both the people and the gear. "We are all certified firefighters," said Fire Chief Josh Kurtz, a 15-year veteran of the department and a lifelong resident of Texarkana. "Some of us are commissioned firefighters, having been through the academy or similar certification. Others were certified via State Fire and Fire Marshall's Association. You have to be certified to fight fires with us. We also have certified paramedics, emergency medical technicians and first responders." Kurtz, like all the members of his crew, does this as a volunteer. TEXARKANA GAZETTE Celina firefighter challenges young boy to dance-off at Halloween event VIDEO: We know one Texas firefighter who has some sweet dance moves! While working a Halloween event, a Celina firefighter decided to get jiggy and have a dance-off with a kid attending the "Beware! Of The Square festival" in Celina, Texas. The firefighter was captured on video hitting "The Shoot" and some other dance moves we're too old to identify, but the real champ in this battle was the kid who stole the show with his rhythm and swag. The Celina Fire Department said the dance-off was completely random and they are proud to see their employees interacting with the residents. "Our tag line is Life Connected, and we think this demonstrates just that," the department said. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Ohio firefighter dies from electric shock after trying to help victims of crash The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a crash that left two people dead early Sunday morning on Sprague Road, west of state Route 252. According to officials, 31-year-old Keith Liedtke, of Columbia Station, was driving a 2007 Pontiac G5 in the eastbound lane of Sprague Road. Twenty-seven-year-old Brent Reszler, of Columbia Station, was in the passenger seat. The Pontiac went off the right side of the road, hitting a utility pole which broke in half, bringing power lines down in the roadway. Both men got out of the car and walked across the road, coming into contact with the downed lines. Later on, 23-year-old Brett Wilson and 24-year-old Hannah Gallagher, both from Cleveland, heard the crash and went to help. Both Wilson and Gallagher also came in contact with the power lines. WKYC STUDIOS Amid South Carolina county fire dispute, the closest department might not receive the first call An ongoing dispute between neighboring fire department jurisdictions in northern Beaufort County could mean that, beginning Friday, the closest firefighters won't always respond first to an emergency. Leaders of the Beaufort-Port Royal Fire Department and Burton Fire District say their departments are equipped to keep residents adequately safe despite the latest escalation in the spat. The municipalities and Burton Fire District have been at odds for more than 20 years over agreements for service and compensation for properties the municipalities have annexed in the Burton area, an unincorporated community in northern Beaufort County. Under multiple agreements since, Beaufort and Port Royal have each paid Burton Fire District an annual fee for covering the properties now in city or town limits, based on established formulas. THE ISLAND PACKET Fatal Massachusetts fire raises questions on whether blackouts affected response time The recent fatal fire on Coffin Ave has brought renewed attention to the fire department's blackout policy. First responders were able to locate and evacuate 85-year-old Louise Barboza on the third floor of her three-story home after receiving reports of a structure fire, but she suffered second and third degree burns and later died at the hospital. On Thursday, the president of the local firefighters union Tom Carreiro sent out a statement, he said, in response to media questions about blackouts following the "tragic fire on Tuesday evening." The statement said that, "The First Due apparatus (for Tuesday's fire) were Engine 8 and Ladder 4 from Station 8 located at the corner of Acushnet Avenue and Davis Street. On this day Engine 8 was the ‘blacked out' (closed) apparatus for a 24 hour shift." SOUTH COAST TODAY NFPA awarded FEMA funds to develop free public safety drone compliance program for the fire service The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), has received just shy of a million dollars in Fire Prevention and Safety Grant money from FEMA to develop a free public safety drone compliance program that includes educational training and a searchable knowledgebase that tracks fire service drone programs and usage. Fire departments have rapidly expanded the use of drones as more communities have realized the lifesaving impact that aerial technology can have in response to structural fires, wildland firefighting, search and rescue efforts, hazardous material responses, natural disaster efforts, and any other events that would benefit from increased situational awareness. Although drone safety policies and standards continue to evolve, many U.S. fire departments are without the proper information, knowledge, and experience needed to establish and maintain a legally sound public safety program that is compliant with FAA regulations, and the standards produced by ASTM International, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and NFPA. NFPA.ORG Gender-neutral facilities included in Michigan fire station renovation After recently going solar, an Ann Arbor fire station is set to undergo interior renovations. City Council has OK'd a $208,400 contract with Allied Building Service Co. of Detroit for upgrades to Station 6 next to Briarwood Mall, including adding gender-neutral facilities. The station was constructed in the early 1980s when the fire service was made up of mostly male firefighters, officials said. As more women join the ranks, it's important to ensure fire station facilities reflect changes in gender makeup, Matt Kulhanek, the city's facilities manager, told council in a memo. "The proposed renovations to Fire Station #6 will provide gender-neutral restroom and shower facilities and living spaces, which can be used by all fire service employees during all shifts regardless of gender," Kulhanek wrote.
