Wildfire rages in northern Val Verde County County commissioners have sent workers and equipment to assist county fire department and Texas Forest Service firefighters battling a wildfire in northern Val Verde County. County Judge Lewis G. Owens Jr. said Wednesday the county was first notified of the fire Sunday. Owens on Monday said the fire had already charred 1,500 acres, but with the fire's speed, driven by the wind, it could double within hours. As of Wednesday, the blaze had already charred 10,000 acres in Val Verde and Crockett counties. He said the fire is located in the very northern part of Val Verde County and in southern Crockett County. At the time, he said Rowland Garza, Val Verde County emergency management coordinator, had told him the fire was sited about 30 to 40 miles south of Interstate 10. DEL RIO NEWS-HERALD Corpus Christi fire captain, six firefighters being tested for COVID-19 A Corpus Christi fire captain and six firefighters are self-monitoring due to possible exposure to the COVID-19 virus. The exposure reportedly came from the captain's family member, according to a City of Corpus Christi news release. Officials said they will make determinations regarding the next steps once the test results come back. "The City of Corpus Christi is committed to ensuring the safety of first responders and will take necessary action to protect personnel, their families, and the community," said the city in the release. KRIS-TV NBC 6 CORPUS CHRISTI Firefighters rescue teenage girl from Wood County well A group of firefighters from area VFDs worked together to rescue a teenage girl who fell into a water well in Wood County on Tuesday. Erynn Thomas was playing with a friend when she accidentally fell into a well that was 35 to 40 feet deep. The friend ran to Thomas' grandparents' house nearby to tell them what had happened. David Kratzmeyer, Thomas' grandfather, rushed to the well with a length of knotted rope, and they tried and failed to pull Erin out of the well. Next door neighbor Ty Oaks, who is a firefighter with the Hainsville Volunteer Fire Department, hurried over to help as the grandfather was calling 911. He called Cory Clanton, his chief, because he knew Clanton was an expert in this sort of rescue. KLTV-TV ABC 7 TYLER Round Rock firefighters help battle sprawling wildfire in Crockett County Four Round Rock firefighters were deployed Wednesday to stop a sprawling wildfire in Crockett County. STATESMAN Third Abilene patient dies; 14 city employees test positive Abilene city officials announced Wednesday a third patient has died from the coronavirus COVID-19 and 14 city employees tested positive for the illness in the last 48 hours. There are now 185 confirmed cases, with 21 new cases announced Wednesday. A man in his 60s with underlying health conditions died Wednesday morning, according to a news release. Nine staffers at the Abilene Taylor County Public Health District and Mercy Health Care Center are self-isolating with mild COVID-19 symptoms after testing positive, the release said. Rhode Island firefighters using Zoom to consult with doctors during rescue calls As they deal with a pandemic, the city's fire rescue crews are trying out a new technique. From the scene of the rescue call, the Providence firefighters make contact with a doctor, via Zoom, on an iPad. The doctor's input, based in part on vital signs and other information that firefighters provide electronically, can head off an unnecessary emergency visit to the hospital. The Providence firefighters' recent foray into the field of "telemedicine" is a direct consequence of the coronavirus pandemic. Local doctors and the city's fire rescue crews are trying out the technique, on a trial basis, to see if telemedicine can provide efficiencies that would help conserve emergency medical personnel and equipment for needed hospital visits, according to public safety officials. PROVIDENCE JOURNAL IAFC: Help Advocate for Additional Funding for Fire and EMS Departments The IAFC needs your help in measuring the effects of state and local government social distancing orders on local fire and EMS department budgets, including the long-term implications on resources and staffing. IAFC President and Chairman of the Board, Chief Gary Ludwig, created an Economic Crisis Task Force to help fire and EMS chiefs plan and prepare for the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Task force chair, Chief Steve Pegram, and task force members have developed a survey to obtain data about the financial effects of the pandemic. This information will assist the IAFC's efforts to educate the Administration and Congress about the economic assistance needed to help fire and EMS departments maintain operations during this economic slowdown. Please take time today to complete this short survey by 11:59 PM ET, April 28. IAFC.ORG Fire Departments Join Neighbors App To Make Communities Safer While people are staying apart, the Neighbors App by Ring is helping communities come together. This free app is a valuable resource for information from fellow neighbors as well as official sources, such as local law enforcement agencies and, now, fire departments. On April 21, Ring announced that fire departments across the country are joining Neighbors. This means fire department officials can share real-time, hyperlocal safety updates to Neighbors and connect with their residents in new ways. Enabling fire department officials to directly relay updates will keep locals informed with timely, credible, verified information. Fire departments currently using Neighbors include the Brownsville Fire Department (TX), Rogers Fire Department (AR), Franklin Township Fire District No. 1 (NJ), Indianapolis Fire Department (IN) and the Charlotte Fire Department (NC). BATAVIA PATCH Created for Anthrax Attacks, Pennsylvania Researchers' Cold Plasma Air Filter Is Now Being Prepped to Face COVID-19 Researchers at Drexel University's C. & J. Nyheim Plasma Institute are modifying an air sterilization system they created to combat the threat of anthrax attacks post-9-11 in hopes it can now help to ward off COVID-19. "As public health research reveals how the virus can persist and be transmitted through the air in indoor environments, it will become increasingly important for engineers to develop air sterilization technology that can neutralize or remove it," said Alexander Fridman, PhD, director of the Nyheim Plasma Institute and a professor in Drexel's College of Engineering, who is a leading National Science Foundation-supported effort to develop technology that can neutralize the novel coronavirus. The project, supported by a $200,000 NSF grant, is one of the first to look at how to eliminate the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the environment. DREXEL NOW Monster Monument in Delaware lit up in support of health care workers, first responders One of Dover International Speedway's most recognizable attractions stands in support of local and national health care workers and first responders during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Monster Monument at Victory Plaza, the symbol for Dover International Speedway throughout the sports and entertainment landscape, is bathed in blue light during the evening and overnight hours in support of those who are in the front lines of the fight against the spread of COVID-19. "All of us at the Monster Mile are in awe of the daily extraordinary efforts of our local and national health care workers," said Mike Tatoian, president and CEO of Dover International Speedway. "Lighting the Monster Monument in blue is just a small way we can show the first-responder community and their families that we are thinking of them and their safety in this time."
