Lightning strike believed to be to blame for oil tank fire in Caldwell County VIDEO: An oil tank fire near Lockhart is believed to have been caused by a lightning strike, according to officials. Edward Hanna, the Fire Chief for Mid-County Fire Rescue, says they got a call about the oil tank battery fire at 7:18 Wednesday morning. Chief Hanna says at tank batteries they build a sort of "containment dam" around them and the fire never escaped the dam. They believe the fire started as a result of a lightning strike, but will need to confirm that with the National Weather Service. Three other fire departments from Caldwell County and the Office of Emergency Management all assisted. The Texas Railroad Commission, who regulates oil, is also on scene. Mid-County Fire says two tanks are still burning and should be fully under control in the next hour or two, but there's no chance of the fire spreading. KFOX-TV FOX 14 EL PASO San Antonio's new decontamination setup a ‘game changer' for reusing N95 masks A decontamination company is setting up operations in San Antonio with a federal contract to disinfect up to 80,000 N95 face masks a day for area hospitals, nursing homes and first responders who need them most. Battelle, based in Ohio, established the Critical Care Decontamination System, or CCDS, at the transformed Freeman Coliseum grounds, the location of a temporary hospital built to house non-critical patients that has not proved needed. The company expects to begin filling orders by the end of the week at the Freeman, one of 60 locations covered by a $400 million contract awarded to Battelle by the Defense Logistics Agency on behalf of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA. SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS NEWS 2 Firefighters Sustain ‘Minor Burns' Battling Far North Dallas Blaze Two firefighters were injured battling an apartment fire in Far North Dallas Wednesday afternoon, officials say. Crews responded to the fire in the 3900 block of Rosemeade Parkway at 2:19 p.m., according to Dallas Fire-Rescue. Officials said when crews arrived on scene, they saw smoke coming from a third-floor apartment and it quickly spread into nearby units. Ultimately, about 50 firefighters put the flames out in about one hour, according to Dallas Fire-Rescue. The fire damaged "a minimal number of units," but other apartments took on water damage, officials said. No residents were injured, but two firefighters sustained "minor burn injuries" and were transported to a local hospital for treatment and released, Dallas Fire-Rescue said. KXAS-TV NBC 5 DALLAS - FORT WORTH Investigators Say Lightning Sparked 3 Frisco House Fires In Less Than 2 Hours Fire investigators said they believe lightning caused three overnight house fires that happened within less than a couple of hours of each other overnight in Frisco. The first fire happened in the 11000 block of Mesa Verde Drive at 10:54 p.m. Smoke was visible to firefighters when they arrived at the 2-story home. By 11:09, the fire was "under control." Then, firefighters were call to another house fire in the 600 block of Triple Bar Road. Firefighters saw fire coming out of the roof of the 2-story home when they arrived. By 12:02, they had it under control. But only minutes later, they were called to yet another fire at a home in the 800 block of Cain River Drive. Firefighters saw smoke emanating from the attic of the single-story house when they arrived. After making an aggressive attack, that fire was declared under control by 12:36 a.m. CBS DALLAS/FORT WORTH San Antonio firefighters struggle with flames, family's fears and gear at fire San Antonio firefighters struggled with flames, a family's fears and their own gear at the site of a house fire on the East Side Wednesday morning. They were called to the 100 block of F Street after 3:30 a.m. and found a small building behind a main home fully involved in fire. Within seconds, they also found out that fear was part of the equation. "Family members in the front of the house were insistent that their father, family member, was in that structure," said Battalion Chief Connie Hall with the San Antonio Fire Department. She said firefighters immediately got started battling the flames, while keeping in mind that someone could be inside the 10'x12' foot structure. At one point during that firefight, they had to call San Antonio police to help calm down the family, Hall said. In the middle of the commotion, though, they all got a welcome surprise. Dozen fire trucks mothballed amid drop in Las Vegas Strip emergency calls The Clark County Fire Department is parking a dozen trucks because of a drastic reduction in emergency calls on the Strip, which was closed last month in response to the coronavirus pandemic, officials said. The crews of those units are being reassigned to other areas, and nobody is being laid off, officials said. Units taken out of rotation include five rescue units, four engine companies, one ladder truck, one rescue squad and one battalion chief, officials said. "The majority of these units are in the resort corridor and are usually among the busiest in the country," Fire Chief John Steinbeck said. "The drop in visitor volume has caused service demand to fall significantly in these areas." Steinbeck said the situation was "very fluid" and that "a unit that makes sense to temporarily shut down this week may very well not make sense next week." LAS VEGAS SUN New York: Antibody testing hints at coronavirus' hellish toll on FDNY/EMS, NYPD Nearly 20 percent of FDNY/EMS members and over 10 percent of NYPD cops screened for coronavirus antibodies tested positive, Gov. Andrew Cuomo revealed Wednesday, as the state death toll crept towards 18,000. The results came in days after Cuomo announced that 1,000 members from each department would be tested for antibodies, which would indicate that their immune systems battled the bug at some point. Of those screened, some 17.1 percent of FDNY/EMS members tested positive, the governor said. "We believe that's because the EMT number is driving it up," said Cuomo. "They are the frontline." Within the hard-hit NYPD — which has about 55,000 uniformed and civilian employees in total — 10.5 percent of tests came back positive, Cuomo said. NEW YORK POST ‘Unprecedented' contact tracing efforts take shape to contain coronavirus in Washington state Gov. Jay Inslee has called for a "rapid-response" contact tracing effort as part of his plan for the gradual reopening of Washington state, likening it to "something like a fire brigade." Contact tracing is a method by which public health officials identify individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19 and track down anyone they may have been in contact with. These contacts are then informed and tested themselves; those who test positive are recommended to self-quarantine for two weeks to prevent further spread of the virus. Individual tracing has previously been used for other disease outbreaks such as tuberculosis and sexually transmitted diseases. "It definitely has been successful in prior outbreaks and it's used routinely for public health," Dr. Janet Baseman of the School of Public Health said of the practice. When the first case of the virus arrived in King County in late February, early contact tracing efforts were activated, according to Baseman, who led a group of students to aid the measures. THE DAILY How a team of NASA engineers developed a ventilator for COVID-19 patients in just a month VIDEO: Working as an engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, David Van Buren usually spends his time designing and building instruments for space telescopes or robots that will explore other worlds in our Solar System. But for the last month, Van Buren and a group of his colleagues at JPL have been working on a project that is truly unexplored terrain for them: making a ventilator to help patients sick with COVID-19. While Van Buren had some previous experience in medical engineering, he'd never designed a ventilator before. But he and his co-workers at JPL are used to making things they don't have any experience making. In fact, they're used to making things that no one has experience making. "When a scientist comes to us and says they want to go to a moon of Jupiter and drill into the ice and see what's underneath, that's something that's never been done before," Van Buren tells The Verge. THE VERGE VIDEO: Fleet of drones display support for healthcare workers and first responders in Pennsylvania Stunning footage shows a fleet of around 150 drones near Franklin Field in University City creating incredible displays in support of healthcare workers and first responders on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic. The company behind it is called Verge Aero, which is based out of the University of Pennsylvania. The video was taken Tuesday night by a member of the Philadelphia Second Alarmers who was on duty when she recorded it. People around the country have been coming together to show their support for front line workers. WTXF-TV FOX 29 PHILADELPHIA PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
