House fire kills Combes man A heater or fireplace might have sparked a house fire in which a 34-year-old man died, Police Chief Patrick Quill said Wednesday. State fire marshals continue to investigate the Monday night blaze that killed Mark Anthony Silva, a security guard, father of four children and brother of two firefighters. He was alone at 203 Holland St. at about 11:15 p.m. when the fire broke out, Combes officials said. "It appears it was accidental, either from a heater or fireplace," Quill said. "Both looked like they were running in the evening. Right now, it's still under investigation." Harlingen firefighters found the house "fully engulfed in flames," with Silva's body near a front door hallway, Quill said. There were no other injuries, he said. "The fire was contained to the one residence and did not spread to other homes," he said. Quill said the blaze gutted the house. VALLEY MORNING STAR After Watson explosion, Houston alters hazardous material storage rules Just under a year after an explosion at Watson Grinding & Manufacturing killed two and damaged over 400 structures, including homes, Houston City Council approved a new set of rules regarding storage of hazardous materials. "A lot of my constituents have asked what was going to come of this," said District A Council Member Amy Peck, who represents the northwest area of Houston where the explosion occurred. "In a city without zoning, this is very important," Council Member Sallie Alcorn said. The amendments to an existing ordinance strengthen the fire marshal's enforcement capabilities and adds libraries, churches, public parks and community centers to the list of locations that businesses that store hazardous materials must stay farther than 1,000 feet away from. It also requires businesses to apply for permits to store hazardous materials outside. Previously, businesses only needed hazardous material storage permits for indoor storage. COMMUNITY IMPACT - LAKE HOUSTON, HUMBLE, AND KINGWOOD Fire investigators search for 2 women suspected of setting set fire to homeless encampment in northwest Austin Fire investigators would like the community's help to identify two women who bought gasoline and allegedly set fire to a homeless encampment in northwest Austin. The Austin Fire Department reported the two women went Tuesday at about 1 p.m. to the Circle K at 8656 Spicewood Springs Road to buy gasoline. Investigators said they believe the women then drove to a homeless camp near U.S. Highway 183 and Spicewood Springs Road and used the gasoline to light a fire there. Firefighters said the fire did not hurt anyone, but it did damage some tents and other property. The store's surveillance camera showed one of the two women inside, and fire investigators hope finding her will help them identify the other woman. Fire investigators said they believe the women are 25- to 30-years-old and may be Hispanic or white. Because of this, County Fire Chief Rick Rangel says for the past few years there has been a lot of talk about building a new fire station. This time in south of Webb County. With the growing number of people living in the area, he hopes the plans turn into action. The vision they have for the fire station is to be built in this open space off the road across from La Presa Community Center. KTLA-TV 5 CW LOS ANGELES Smoke, Panic and a 'Ball of Fire': Las Vegas' Alpine Hotel Fire 1 year later PHOTOS: Floyd Guenther wanted cereal. It was early Dec. 21, 2019, about 4 a.m. Quiet. Many of his neighbors at the Alpine Motel Apartments were asleep. Nothing seemed unusual as he headed for the corner store, closing up his third-floor room and walking down a narrow hallway toward the building's front stairwell. Floyd Guenther told police he saw "a ball of fire" in the Alpine Motel Apartments, and that nothing happened when he pulled multiple fire alarms. But on the first floor, where the stairs spit him out, he suddenly smelled smoke. Above him, near the front door, it gently hovered, swirling on the ceiling. He heard no beeping smoke detectors. No blaring fire alarm. Peeking out from the stairwell landing and down the first floor hallway, he couldn't see much. So he stepped a little farther out, peering beyond a vending machine and pair of fridges partially blocking the path.
