KBTX-TV CBS 3 BRYAN Tyler Fire Department conducting Fire Safety Blitz to replace, install safety equipment The Tyler Fire Department and the American Red Cross are teaming up to ensure East Texans are up to date on their fire safety equipment. On July 12, 19 and 26, firefighters will be going door-to-door to check smoke alarms as part of their Fire Safety Blitz initiative. During this time they will replace batteries and install free smoke alarms in homes that need them, according to the city of Tyler. They will be concentrating on houses near Woldert Park and Caldwell Zoo due to a recent house fire in a residence with no smoke alarms. According to the Tyler Fire Department, the risk of dying in a structure fire at a home is approximately 50% lower in homes with working smoke alarms. They reminded residents that if they do hear smoke alarms, they should get outside and stay outside. VIDEO: Large fire destroys old high school in Indiana PHOTOS: A historic building went up in flames, breaking many hearts for residents in Decker, Indiana. The fire destroyed the former Decker high school. The old Decker school holds many memories to the community. "We used to roll, skate, jump rope, hopscotch, and play in the trees. There's still one tree left over there that we used to play on," said Decker resident Yolanda Lane. According to people in the community, the building used to be a high school until 1967 and served as an elementary school until 1999. Now, it's being used as a sawmill. Yolanda Lane was saddened to learn her old school was damaged so severely. "I grew up here. It's part of my history. I hate to see part of my history disappear," said Lane. WTHI-TV CBS/FOX/MYNETWORKTV/CW+ 10 TERRE HAUTE Biden signs Fire Act, sending millions to departments across the U.S. President Joe Biden signed the Fire Grants and Safety Act this week, reauthorizing millions of dollars in grants for fire departments across the United States. Biden reiterated his view of the crucial role fire fighters play in communities big and small. "The only thing that saves fire fighters is more fire fighters," he said in an Oval Office signing. Through nearly $700 million in annual funding, departments rely on Assistance for Firefighters (AFG) and Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grants to hire and retain fire fighters, buy modern equipment, and provide training to keep members safe. The bill reauthorizes AFG and SAFER through fiscal year 2028 and extends the sunset for the programs to September 2030. KXLY-TV ABC 4 SPOKANE Florida fire trucks will soon have blue rear lights and here's why Until this month, only police and prison vehicles could use blue lights. Large fire trucks throughout the Sunshine State will soon have blue rear lights in addition to the red tail lights seen on practically all vehicles nationwide. There's a good reason. This past Legislative Session, state lawmakers unanimously approved a bipartisan bill (HB 463) to allow government-owned fire department vehicles weighing more than 12 tons to have blue lights on their rears. Previously, the allowance only applied to police and prison vehicles. Numerous studies have found that red and blue are the most visible illuminated colors on the spectrum. That includes a 2004 study by the Florida Highway Patrol that determined that red flashing lights are most easily perceived in daylight, while blue stands out best at night.
