College Station police and fire departments to receive over $1 million in new budget College Station just wrapped up their budget proposal workshop. With the budget focusing on two emergency departments. Many say this focus is a reflection of new growth in this community. College Station's proposed budget has the most money designated towards its police and fire departments. With about 28 percent of the city's budget, the College Station Police Department is proposed to get about $1.1 million dollars. That's about a five percent increase from last year's budget. "Bryan, College Station is growing leaps and bounds so our law enforcement needs to mirror the growth because of the expansion," Patrick Mece, District Attorney shared with KRHD 25 News. A portion of that money is expected to go towards replacing patrol vehicles and adding on three positions: two detectives and a police sergeant. KXXV-TV ABC 25 WACO Two Odessa firefighters' suffer heat-related injuries due to house fire and burns once again At around one this afternoon a house fire broke out in the 1300 block of Redbud Ave. "I started hearing like a weird noise and I told her to wake up, we started smelling like burning so we came outside and we saw the smoke in the air." Yareli Tarango said. Neighbor, Tarango said that she thought it was her friend's mom who had burned something in the kitchen but then she realized she was not home. Nonetheless, the fire was put out, and although the home did suffer major damages no one who lived in the home was hurt. Two of the firefighters who were assisted in putting out the fire were taken to the hospital for heat-related injuries. Firefighter, Erik Brown said "When its this hot and humid just for us as firemen its like us being in our winter coats and in addition to the heat and everything else that is going on." KMID-TV ABC 2 MIDLAND Update: Plano House Explosion May Have Been Intentional, Investigators Now Say Plano police issued a brief statement Wednesday, July 21 saying Monday's house explosion that injured six people, may have been intentional after all. Plano Police detectives and the Fire Marshal came to that conclusion after further investigation. They had originally said it appeared to be an accident with a gas leak inside the home. "Based on the investigation, this incident appears to be isolated and there are no indications of any threats to our community," Plano Police said. Police did not say whether or not they have a suspect in mind. Atmos Energy responded with the following statement: Atmos Energy has completed its safety checks and ruled out involvement of its system in the July 19 incident that occurred at 4429 Cleveland Drive in Plano. As reported by Plano Police and Plano Fire-Rescue, this may have been intentional. KTXA-TV CBS 11 FORT WORTH 'Monumental' Day: Mineral Wells Fire Department holds push-in ceremony for new ladder truck PHOTOS: Mineral Wells firefighters, their family members, city leaders and the community said goodbye to the old and hello to the new, welcoming MWFD's new Ladder 2 truck Monday morning. The official push-in ceremony is a tradition that remains after almost two decades. In the late 1800s, fire departments, upon returning to the station after a fire call, would have to disconnect their fire equipment from the horses, since the horses couldn't easily back the equipment into the station. A crowd gathered at Mineral Well Fire Station 2, with everyone lending a hand — literally — to push the new truck into the station. "This is a pretty monumental day for us," Mineral Wells Fire Chief Ryan Dunn said. "We are retiring our Quint 2, which has served the city since 2004, and are welcoming in this 2019 ladder truck." WEATHERFORD DEMOCRAT Evacuation order lifted, roads reopen after Dow's chemical plant leak in La Porte An evacuation order has been lifted and roads have been reopened around the area of a chemical incident at Dow's Bayport facility in La Porte. While things return to normal in the area, the scene was still active earlier though the tanker involved was stable, according to La Porte's Office of Emergency Management. Emergency response teams said the tank trailer involved was still venting, but that venting had reduced overnight. A half-mile evacuation radius around the site was put into place Wednesday, and roads in the area were closed as a precaution. The incident began some time before 7:35 a.m. Wednesday. Dow reported no injuries due to the venting of hydroxy ethyl acrylate, which the company said is an acrylic used in coatings and adhesives. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON Colony Fire Departments performance could lead to lower insurance rates Residents in The Colony may soon receive discounted insurance premiums thanks to an upgraded safety rating the fire department recently achieved. Fire Chief Scott Thompson told the City Council on Tuesday that the department has received a rating of 2 from the Insurance Services Office (ISO), a national organization that grades cities' fire protection. The Colony's new rating is an improvement from its previous grade of 3. In addition, Thompson said The Tribute was at a 9 because of its distance from a fire station, but now The Tribute has a rating of 2. Home and business insurance companies often factor in ISO ratings when coming up with an insurance rate. "Depending on who their insurer is they could see a tremendous improvement on their homeowners (insurance)," Thompson said. THE COLONY COURIER-LEADER PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

2 adults, 4 kids injured in Pennsylvania house explosion VIDEOS: Two adults and four children were injured in a house explosion in West Brandywine Township, Chester County, officials said. The incident was first reported just before 12 p.m. Wednesday on the 400 block of Hibernia Road. Firefighters and EMS responded to the home and found the victims suffering from burn injuries. Officials said one adult and two children were flown from the scene by medical helicopter to an area hospital. Two others were taken to a hospital by ambulance, and one person refused treatment. Linsey Carpenter, who lives nearby, said she heard the explosion and went to help. "We saw the little girl run across the street. We grabbed her and checked her out. Her hair was singed, her eyebrows were singed. Then the little boy came out and that's when the flames started," she said. WPVI-TV ABC 6 PHILADELPHIA Alabama fire chiefs concerned about new state law changing school construction oversight Alabama firefighters are trying to change a new state law, which they said causes safety concerns in Alabama's schools. As written, HB 220, which passed in the 2021 legislative session, removes state oversight of K-12 school construction projects of $500,000 or less. It gives that responsibility to the school systems. The law's supporters say the goal is to remove government bureaucracy and save school systems money. But Alabaster Fire Chief Tim Love said it could lead to school buildings not being up to code. "There will be no independent third party inspection or review of the plans or process as it goes along," Love said. "Without that, there's no guarantee codes are being followed." Love is president of the Alabama Fire Fighters Association. He wants the law changed before it goes into effect February 1. WBMA-LD ABC 58 BIRMINGHAM North Carolina county EMS testing use of body cameras in bid to enhance training, patient care, safety Robeson County paramedics and residents can feel a little safer Wednesday, the day some county EMS personnel donned body cameras in an effort to protect paramedics from assault and to provide the best care to patients. Wednesday marks the start of a 14-day testing and evaluation phase for six body cameras being incorporated into patient care, said Nestor Rivera, Robeson County EMS Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement specialist and paramedic. Three will be worn during the day shift and three on the night shift. Each Reveal body-worn camera can store up to 12 hours of continuous imaging and costs $599. The cameras will work in conjunction with dash cameras already installed in ambulances. The EMS service hasn't decided whether or not it will buy 18 or 32 cameras, using donated money. THE ROBESONIAN Missouri first responders speak on Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District tunnel rescue VIDEO: There was an intense underground rescue near St. Louis nearly 200 feet down at a wastewater tunnel construction site. One worker was injured. The site is part of the four-mile MSD Deer Creek project that stretches from Lemay through Shrewsbury to Clayton. The site was closed Wednesday after the accident, which was very scary for the injured worker and others who were trapped, plus two Shrewsbury firefighter/paramedics who went down to get most of them out. An on-site construction team was able to free the one worker who needed medical care, the firefighters said. He hurt his leg after a 3,000-pound form used to shape concrete fell around 9:30 in the morning. The construction team was able to shift the form with a crane and lift him out. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening injury, authorities said. KTVI-TV FOX 2 ST. LOUIS From Massachusetts to Lebanon: Surplus gear donated to firefighters in need The Middle Eastern country of Lebanon is a long way from the Hilltowns, but thanks to the internet, a bagel company and an enthusiastic young firefighter, firefighters in the capital area of Beirut are wearing gear donated by four local towns. And those who organized the donation are looking to send over even more. "We're still trying to get more gear over there," said recently retired Goshen firefighter Bob Labrie. The young firefighter that started the effort is River de la Vida Williams, 20, a student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and member of the Cummington and Goshen fire departments. "If you know River, you're not surprised by his ambition," Labrie said. When Williams joined the Cummington Fire Department at age 17, Bernie Forgea, the fire chief at the time, announced his recruitment at a town meeting. At the time, Forgea mentioned that the department had gear that was more than 10 years old sitting in unopened boxes DAILY HAMPSHIRE GAZETTE - METERED SITE PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
