KAGS-LD NBC 23 BRYAN Crews make aggressive attack to knock down 2-alarm apartment fire in San Antonio VIDEO: Firefighters acted fast to extinguish a fire at an apartment building Wednesday night on the North Side. The fire started around 8:45 p.m. at the Villas at Castle Hills apartments off Jackson Keller Road near Blanco Road. Upon arrival, firefighters said they found heavy fire coming from the roof of an apartment building, which escalated it to a 2-alarm fire. After calling in the second company, firefighters aggressively attacked the fire and were able to knock it down pretty quickly. According to fire officials, there are six units that were affected. The 10 people who lived in those buildings were safely evacuated and relocated to empty units for the night. No injuries were reported. Investigators looking into what caused the fire. WOAI-TV NBC/CW 4 SAN ANTONIO Port Arthur Officials: Fuel, food prices could keep people from evacuating in the event of a storm When it comes to evacuating for a hurricane, Carlos Johnson said the price of fuel could factor into the matter. "It'll scare me to death," he said while filling up Tuesday at a Port Arthur convenience store. "If I've got to evacuate, I don't know where I'm going." The rising costs of fuel, food and the availability of lodging is all something city leaders are evaluating at the start of an Atlantic hurricane season predicted to be above average by the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration. "At this juncture, I have spoken about it with others," said Mayor Bartie. "(We are) looking at rises in the price of gasoline, looking at the necessity of evacuating because of the perils. We can only ask for citizens to be frugal now with their personal finances." Bartie asked residents to attempt to save money as they can in the event it's necessary at some point this season. PORT ARTHUR NEWS Fire crews perform controlled burn on North Padre Island ahead of Fourth of July weekend Fourth of July weekend is a highly celebrated holiday along the coast, and although it might be a few weeks away, crews are already making sure to keep a close watch on fireworks. The Island Blast Fire Work Display is a beloved Fourth of July tradition for families across the Coastal Bend; but along with the usual red, white, and blue boats of all shapes and sizes, there is almost always a small fire that breaks out on the spoil islands near the display. "We haven't got a chance to burn off the last couple years with weather things like that last year. We didn't think it was gonna burn and it did." said Deputy Fire Chief J.P. Hominick with Emergency Service District #2. In 2021 a fire began on Spoil Island two minutes into the firework display. That's why Hominick and his ESD #2 crew, along with help from station #13, and the Annaville Fire Department are conducting a controlled burn-ahead of this years event. 'It was horrific': 8 unit condo under construction in California engulfed by fire A terrifying fire engulfed an eight unit condo that was under construction and surrounded by numerous occupied homes Wednesday. The fire happened near 5301 East Commerce Way and about 8 units under construction were affected by the fire, according to the Sacramento Fire Department. Residents in the surrounding area were evacuated, but have since been allowed back into their homes. The fire was captured on video by neighbor Savan Patel and his wife as they fled the Artisan Square neighborhood along Commerce Way just after midnight Wednesday. Some building windows from across the street melted due to the heat from the flames. "It melted a broom, a plastic broom in the top master bedroom," said a man named Frank, who was visiting family in the area. KXTV ABC 10 SACRAMENTO Related: Drone video shows aftermath of Natomas condo fire Maryland State Firemen's Association voting to change name Over the weekend firefighters from around Maryland are coming together to Ocean City for their annual conference. One item on the agenda is voting to rename the Maryland State Firemen's Association to Maryland State Firefighter's Association. 44 state fire-fighting organizations have legally changed their names to be gender inclusive. Senator Cheryl Kagan has been named legislator of the year by the association for the past two years and says the name is sexist and inaccurate especially because three of Maryland's largest counties have fire chiefs who are women. She urges those who are voting this weekend to think of all the women who risk their lives for our safety who are not reflected by the name of the association. "The symbols matter inclusion matters," said Sen. Kagan. WDVM-TV 25 HAGERSTOWN ‘Beer Rescue': New firetruck in North Carolina catching looks for distributing beer VIDEO: A new firetruck in Statesville won't be putting out fires anytime soon. In fact, it's not even part of the fire department. A brewery in town has manufactured its own fire engine to help quench the thirst of beer enthusiasts. The owner of Red Buffalo Brewing Company in Downtown Statesville wanted to expand his business without buying another brick-and-mortar location. After seeing a firetruck converted into a food truck at a festival, an idea came to mind, why not use a fire truck to pour beer? By law, you don't have to pull over for the firetruck in Statesville, but perhaps you'll want to. When the red lights are flashing, the beer is ready to pour. "People will say you're crazy, but then they love it. So it's good crazy," said the owner of Red Buffalo Brewing Company, Joe Bondi. WHZY-TV FOX 46 BELMONT Nearly 400 Crashes Of Automated Vehicles Reported Over Past 10 Months Automakers reported nearly 400 crashes over a 10-month period involving vehicles with partially automated driver-assist systems, including 273 with Teslas, according to statistics released Wednesday by U.S. safety regulators. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration cautioned against using the numbers to compare automakers, saying it didn't weight them by the number of vehicles from each manufacturer that use the systems, or how many miles those vehicles traveled. Automakers reported crashes from July of last year through May 15 under an order from the agency, which is examining such crashes broadly for the first time. "As we gather more data, NHTSA will be able to better identify any emerging risks or trends and learn more about how these technologies are performing in the real world," said Steven Cliff, the agency's administrator. WJZ-TV CBS 13 BALTIMORE Pennsylvania House approves bill to improve junior firefighter training Junior firefighters are one step closer to having access to improved training after the House unanimously approved a bill by Rep. Torren Ecker (R-Adams/Cumberland) to prepare junior firefighters for becoming full firefighters. "Volunteer fire companies across the nation, and right here in Pennsylvania, are facing staff shortages that is projected to only get worse if nothing is done," Ecker, a former junior firefighter, said. "This bill will help prepare firefighters who are just beginning to serve and will entice them to stay in the fire service." House Bill 2268 would permit a 17-year-old junior firefighter to complete the Interior Firefighting Module with Live Burns training program in the Fire Training System. Currently, only people 18 and over are allowed to enroll in the training program. WHTM-TV ABC 27 HARRISBURG PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
