A massive fire at a North Side apartment complex has sent two people to the hospital and forced more than a dozen others out of their homes early Thursday morning, according to the San Antonio Fire Department. The fire was called in just before 3 a.m. at the ICON Apartments in the 1300 block of Patricia Drive, not far from both Blanco Road and Churchill High School. Firefighters said when they arrived they found a heavy fire on the second floor of an apartment building and several people on the balconies and immediately began rescuing them. Fire officials said one woman did suffer minor burns and another person jumped from the balcony and was hurt. Both people were taken to a hospital to be checked out. Firefighters say more than a dozen people were forced to evacuate their homes. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO As the city grows northward, so, too, do the services it offers, including fire safety. To that end, officials here gathered on a sultry Wednesday morning — the first official day of summer — to break ground on McAllen's newest fire station. "I'm really proud of our focus, again, in ensuring that we're providing what this community needs," McAllen City Manager Roel "Roy" Rodriguez said after he and a bevy of local dignitaries turned over golden shovelfuls of earth beneath a gleaming sun. It was those public officials, and the ones who came before them, who had both the foresight and fortitude to begin planning for Fire Station 8 nearly a decade ago, the city manager said. "The community should be really proud of their mayor and the city commission to stay focused. It's easy to lose focus on projects that are this far down the road, but their courage is really second to none," Rodriguez said. MYRGV.COM The Amarillo Fire Department loaned a truck to Perryton Fire EMS which took a direct hit from a deadly EF3 tornado. The tornado on Thursday killed three people and injured more than 100 others. It also caused major damage to the fire department and its trucks and ambulances. "Our thoughts and prayers are still with the people of Perryton," said the Amarillo Fire Department. "The whole town was impacted by this storm, including their fire station." AFD sent Reserve Truck 43 for them to use as long as necessary. Perryton Fire EMS initially said the firetrucks and ambulances were "driveable," but under better circumstances, some of them would not be on the road. "It will take time to rebuild, but we know the people of Perryton are resilient and will bounce back quickly," said AFD. KVII-TV ABC/CW+ 7 AMARILLO VIDEO/PHOTOS: A three-story house in Spicewood was destroyed Wednesday night after a lightning strike sparked a fire. The Pedernales Fire Department responded to the scene on Lakehurst Road just before 7 p.m. Multiple other agencies responded to assist. A photo posted by the department at 8:47 p.m. shows the home completely engulfed by flames. Nearly three hours later, the crews were still on scene. The department confirmed that the house was a total loss. No injuries were reported. KEYE-TV CBS 42 AUSTIN |

Their strategy to do so does not involve creating a better forcible-entry axe or a thicker face shield but deploying a device no bigger than a USB flash drive. The two University of Miami graduate students have developed a special sensor capable of detecting the real-time presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the warm zone at structural fires. A class of chemicals that result from burning coal, oil, gas, wood, garbage, and tobacco, PAHs can bind to or form small particles in the air. In laboratory animals, they are known to cause certain cancers. Scientists using bulky instruments like mass spectrometers, which require industrial compressed gas cylinders, have measured levels of PAHs in samples in laboratory settings. UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI As warehouses continue to pop up in western Hancock County, local fire departments are sounding the alarm. The firefighter's union said they simply don't have the staff to fight fires at those massive buildings. At 2.2 million square feet, a brand-new Walmart distribution center in western Hancock County is the largest in the world. It's nearly twice the size of the Walmart warehouse in Plainfield that went up in flames in March of last year. However, if something like that happened in Hancock County, fire officials say it'd be even worse. "If this building was to catch on fire, the whole county combined, including our paid departments and our volunteer departments — we do not have enough to even do half the response of the Plainfield fire," Tony Bratcher, who serves as the president of Hancock County Firefighters Local 4787, said. WXIN-TV FOX 59 INDIANAPOLIS Missouri's first responders could be in store for extra help when seeking mental health services. A bill awaiting a decision from Gov. Mike Parson would broaden an existing firefighter cancer trust fund to also help cover mental health services for other first responders, including 911 operators. Sen. Lincoln Hough, R-Springfield, said his bill is designed to make sure the state has the backs of first responders. "This legislation seeks to give these individuals that are first responders, when they do reach out and they say, ‘You know what? I'm a 911 operator and that call that I just got off of shook me. Maybe I need to talk to somebody about what I'm going through.' And the end goal, really here, is to make sure that they're in a good place and ready to get back to work and do the jobs that we need them to do," said Hough. MISSOURINET VIDEO: The cause of Tuesday night's massive apartment complex fire in the southwest Las Vegas valley is still under investigation. A statement on Wednesday from the company building the unfinished project thanked the Clark County Fire Department for their work in investigating the blaze. "The Associates of Martin-Harris Construction are disheartened by the fire on June 20, 2023, at our Kaktus Life III Project Site. We feel blessed that all of our associates and subcontractor tradespersons are accounted for with no injuries. We want to thank the Clark County Fire Department for their professionalism and will continue to work side by side with them while this event is under investigation," said Guy Martin, president of Martin-Harris Construction.
