11-year-old Clyde girl dies following house fire; fund set up to help with funeral costs Isabella Baird, 11, was fatally injured Tuesday in a house fire just outside city limits. First responders were dispatched to the residence on Private Road 1205 north of Interstate 20 about 3 p.m. Tuesday. Stepsister Rebecca Wilbanks said the family believes Isabella was in her room when a tablet plugged into an extension cord on her bed shorted and started a fire. The youngster hid in a closet, she said. Isabella's mother, Jeanie Key, and stepfather, David Sessions, were about a mile away working at the family's body shop, Wilbanks said. The Callahan County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident, Deputy Chad Campbell said Wednesday, with the assistance of the Texas State Fire Marshal's Office. When Clyde Police Chief Robert Dalton arrived, three bystanders who had removed Isabella from the house were performing "life-saving techniques" on the girl, Campbell said. Dalton took over those efforts until the Clyde Volunteer Fire Department arrived. ABILENE REPORTER-NEWS Follow Up: 8-year-old boy among 3 family members killed in Bryan fire Three members of the same family died early Wednesday after a fire in their Bryan home, officials said. According to Bryan Fire Department Chief Randy McGregor, firefighters responded to a home on Cabot Circle, near Texas 6 and Martin Luther King Jr. Street, around 2:30 a.m. When crews arrived, flames could be seen coming from the home's exterior, and firefighters breached a door to enter. Firefighters found 32-year-old Heather McMasters and her 8-year-old son, John, unresponsive in a bedroom, and 38-year-old Bobby McMasters was found in a game room. The three were removed from the home, and life-saving measures were performed on the family. Officials said the three were pronounced dead at a local hospital. The family's dog also died in the blaze. McGregor said the fire was mostly extinguished within 30 minutes, and most of the home was destroyed. BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION EAGLE Pleasanton converts to full-time fire department In the past year, the City of Pleasanton has been working to convert the Pleasanton Volunteer Fire Department to a full-time, paid department. This new plan came to light following the naming of a new fire chief after Chuck Garris' retirement on April 30. "We've wanted to do this for quite some time now, and we decided now is better of a time as any," said Pleasanton Mayor Travis Hall. Pleasanton Fire Lieutenant Mario Escobedo was named the new fire chief on May 30 during the Pleasanton City Council meeting. The city's plan to convert to a full-time department followed just two weeks after Escobedo was hired. "Due to the dwindling number of volunteers and volunteers not being able to make calls because of other full-time jobs, we decided it's in the best interest of [Pleasanton] residents to have a full-time fire department," stated Mayor Hall. "We now have faster response times and are readily available 24/7 to the community." PLEASANTON EXPRESS Mission firefighter tests positive for COVID-19 The city of Mission has confirmed that at least one of its first responders has tested positive for COVID-19. In a news release, the city announced that a Mission firefighter has self-quarantined at his residence. The release also stated that the city is taking proper steps to notify others who may have been in contact with him. "Everyone that was in direct contact with the firefighter has been properly notified, and we have asked them to self-quarantine," Fire Chief Gilbert Sanchez said in the release. "Rest assured, we are taking every precaution possible to safeguard our firefighters and employees in our department. Our number one priority is their health and wellbeing and continuing to provide exceptional service to our community with safety protocols in place." MONITOR Flower Mound firefighters perform fire, high water rescues The Flower Mound Fire Department responded to several incidents Tuesday morning, including a fire that destroyed a house and multiple water rescues. According to Brandon Barth, emergency services manager, dispatch received a call around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday regarding a house fire in the 3500 block of Gallop Court. Upon arrival crews saw heavy fire coming through a roof. Barth said firefighters rescued a man in his 20s who was still in the house. Barth said the man was treated for minor injuries and released. "It was a lot of fire, and unfortunately the house was destroyed due to the fire," Barth said. Barth said the preliminary investigation indicates that lightning was likely the cause of the fire. In addition, firefighters also rescued two people who were stuck in their vehicles on Lusk Lane near Kings Road because of high water. MCKINNEY COURIER-GAZETTE Texas reports record 5,489 new coronavirus cases, 12th consecutive day of record hospitalizations The Texas Dept. of State Health Services reported 5,489 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday, a new record, along with 381 new hospitalizations, the 12th consecutive day of record hospitalizations. The Austin metro area reported a record 236 total hospitalizations on Tuesday, an increase of 55 — also a record. Spencer Fox, a research associate for the University of Texas COVID-19 Modeling Consortium, said further restrictions or behavioral changes will be necessary to not overwhelm local hospitals in the coming months. "What we're seeing in this trajectory right now is not good," Fox said. "Our models are telling us that we are in the highest-risk timepoint of the pandemic than we've ever been." Tuesday marked the official start to the City of Austin's mask and social distancing mandates which remain in effect through Aug. 15. KIAH-TV CW 39 HOUSTON PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Pittsburgh officials: New 'silent' alarm system cuts down on first responder stress, streamlines info City public safety officials and Mayor Bill Peduto on Wednesday showed off a new "silent" alarm system that alerts only the fire and EMS stations that are being dispatched to the call, rather than blasting the call on a radio for every station and first responder on duty to hear. The $2.8 million, decade-in-the-making alarm system will cut down first responders' stress levels and streamline services, officials said. "Most of the people in the bureau would tell you [listening to radio calls] is part of the job, that's just what we do, it doesn't affect me," said the city's Bureau of Fire Lt. Dan Doyle at Firehouse 37 in Manchester. "... Your body reacts to it, even though you're not going to be the one going out on that call, you kind of jump real quick to make sure you can go about your business. Twenty, thirty, forty years of that really packs a punch." PITTSBURGH POST GAZETTE Firefighters rescue workers doing maintenance atop iconic California water tower VIDEO: A man working atop the iconic Fresno State water tower had to be rushed to the hospital today after being overcome with heat, eventually going into cardiac arrest. "The extended work period up on top there, the strenuous work that they were doing with the heat and the high humidity today, it just overcame him," said Battalion Chief Mike Gibson of the Fresno Fire Department. The man was one of three divers who were scheduled to do maintenance work on the inside of the water tower on the Fresno State campus. Fresno Fire says he had a pulse and was breathing in the ambulance on the way to Saint Agnes Hospital. According to the Fresno Fire Department, rescue crews had to remove the other two workers from the tower as they were not in a condition to make the 130 ft. climb down on their own. Those two workers were not transported to the hospital. Fresno Fire says extra personnel were called in to prevent their own crews from heat exhaustion KFSN-TV ABC 30 FRESNO Baltimore firefighters rally to prevent proposed disbandment of 2 fire units There are continued calls to keep two Baltimore City fire units from closing, the closures are proposed as part of city budget cuts. Firefighters and their families held rallies on Wednesday to voice those calls in public. Firefighters, both active and retired, held rallies outside two fire houses in the city, protesting the proposal to take two engine units out of service permanently, due to city budget cuts. The protests happened outside the fire stations on Bush Street in Pigtown and Cold Spring Lane in northeast Baltimore. Those are the houses that are home to the two units the city is considering taking out of service. The closures aren't for the entire fire station itself, just the engines responsible for certain equipment -- Engines 55 in Pigtown and Four in northeast Baltimore. On Wednesday, fire union leaders joined City Council members calling for Mayor Jack Young to keep the companies open. WBAL-TV NBC 11 BALTIMORE New CDC model predicts up to 150,000 American COVID-19 deaths by mid-July The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released its latest forecast of expected U.S. coronavirus deaths, predicting that between 130,000 and 150,000 Americans would die of the novel virus by July 18. The updated forecast put out by the CDC Wednesday consists of a combination of data from over 20 national models, which also predict an increase in fatalities in several states over the next four weeks, including Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Hawaii, Missouri, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Utah, which the CDC says will exceed the number of reported deaths of the last month. The new death toll forecast comes as coronavirus hospitalizations and caseloads have hit new highs in over a half-dozen U.S. states in the past week. At the end of May, the CDC said that the number of U.S. coronavirus deaths would exceed 115,000 by June 20. WITI-TV FOX 6 MILWAUKEE Wisconsin DNR Can Begin Crafting Regulations To Restrict Firefighting Foam Containing PFAS The state Natural Resources Board has unanimously approved allowing the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to begin drafting regulations to enforce restrictions on firefighting foam that contains chemicals known as PFAS. Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, commonly referred to as PFAS, are chemicals that are found in products ranging from firefighting foam to nonstick cookware. The chemicals have raised concerns because they don't break down easily in the environment, and research has linked the substances to thyroid disease, decreased fertility in women and cancer. Gov. Tony Evers signed a bill earlier this year that bans the use of firefighting foam containing PFAS except in emergencies. The bill also allows testing and storage under specific conditions. The DNR must come up with regulations to put the restrictions in place by September. WISCONSIN PUBLIC RADIO PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
