| 4 Injured, Including 2 Firefighters, After Flames Sweep Through Fort Worth Apartment Complex VIDEO: Four people, including two firefighters, were injured early Wednesday morning after flames ravaged an apartment complex in Fort Worth, officials said. Officials said crews responded to the fire at around 1 a.m. at the Apartments at Fountains Corner near Southwest Loop 820 and Granbury Road. As they arrived, crews found flames coming from a ground level unit. Firefighters were able to put out the flames but not without injuries. According to officials, a woman broke her leg as she jumped from a second floor unit to escape the fire and a man was taken to the hospital with chest pains. Two firefighters were also taken to the hospital for injuries, but they were soon treated and released. The cause of the fire is unknown as crews continue to investigate. KTVT-TV CBS 11 FORT WORTH Amarillo Fire Department preparing for possible Coronavirus outbreak The Amarillo Fire Department is preparing for if an outbreak of COVID-19, also known as the Coronavirus, were to happen in Amarillo. "This is our answer to Coronavirus and trying to make sure we keep our guys safe in situations that are unknown," said Joseph Sykes, firefighter for AFD. The protective gear comes recommended by the CDC. New protocols for gear comes around every few years when new diseases or viruses arise. Captain Kyle Joy with the Amarillo Fire Department says implementing protective gowns, goggles, masks, and gloves comes after the a fire station in Washington was quarantined after responding to a medical call. "A gown, gloves and an N-95 mask, that's what they will be wearing when the walk into a person's home. We don't want patients or citizens to be alarmed, again this is for our protection and for the protection of the citizens of Amarillo," said Joy. KFDA-TV CBS 10 AMARILLO Man dies after getting trapped in concrete in Fort Bend County A man died in a bizarre incident at an industrial site in Fort Bend County overnight, deputies at the scene said. It happened at a site along I-69 at Daily Road, south of Rosenberg. Firefighters and EMS were called to the site around 1 a.m. Thursday when a 911 caller said they found a person trapped in concrete in a hopper car. The caller told authorities the patient was unconscious. It's unknown if the person had a pulse or was even breathing when he was found. An air ambulance was on standby to respond to the scene, but when firefighters made their way to him he was already dead. It's unclear if the person who died was an employee at the facility or not. The Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office is handling the investigation, Rosenberg police said. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON 'No way I can ever repay him': Kerrville firefighter donates part of liver after seeing Facebook post Bubba Laws was given only weeks to live. Pancreatic stones caused a buildup of enzymes in the 69-year-old's liver, which destroyed the organ and left him needing a new one. Bubba's health began to deteriorate while he waited four months for a living liver donor. Making things bleaker, none of his family members were a match. "I was on my way out and I knew it. I had already accepted death," the San Antonio resident said. "I was already planning my funeral, and I was ready to go." Against her father's wishes, Bubba's eldest daughter, Kim Pendergraft, made a plea in November on Facebook for anyone willing to be a living donor. Kerrville firefighter Blair Casey and his wife, Michelle, who have been friends with Pendergraft and her husband for a decade, saw her post on Facebook and decided to get tested. HOUSTON CHRONICLE - METERED SITE Road reopened after Wichita Falls Fire Department investigates gasoline leak Midwestern Parkway has reopened after the Wichita Falls Fire Department and Texas Commission on Environmental Quality finished investigating a gasoline leak. A City of Wichita Falls report stated the leak has been located and stopped. Cleanup crews have been sent to Sikes Lake to clean the lake and fowls. Officials said no fowls should be affected by the leak. Sikes Lake Trail will remain closed until Thursday morning. Guests in the area are asked to refrain from fishing or accessing the water on the north side of the lake after the trail reopens for the time being. The TCEQ has not released the exact cause or origin of the leak. KAUZ-TV CBS 6 WICHITA FALLS House fire in Cedar Park believed to have been caused by lightning strike A house fire in Cedar Park is believed to have been caused by a lightning strike. Firefighters responded to a house located in the 1400 block of Old Mill Road, not far from Oakwood Glen Park, on Tuesday night. A majority of the damage was to the garage and the two vehicles inside. | West Virginia firefighters union calls proposed city budget ‘dangerous' Firefighters Local 313, the local union of firefighters in Morgantown, is dissatisfied with the proposed budget from City Manager Paul Brake because they said it puts the safety of citizens and firefighters at risk. The initially proposed budget would decrease the number of firefighters from 61-49, a reduction of 12 positions. City Manager Paul Brake explained that the city simply cannot afford to keep those 12 positions, which were added in 2017 as part of a Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant from the federal government. The grant runs for three years and ends in November 2020. During a city council meeting on Tuesday, March 3, the city offered to retain six of the 12 positions, however, that still doesn't sit well with the union, President Jayson Nicewarner said. "Six isn't good enough for us we want it to be zero we want to retain all 12 of those firefighting positions," Nicewarner said. He slipped on headphones, put up his feet and watched as a TV screen played scenes from under the sea: dolphins twirling, seaweed swirling, sharks prowling. Behind him, neurofeedback clinician and therapist Gabi Whitmer tracked his brain activity. When McCoy's brain calmed, the music in his headphones got louder, the image on the screen got bigger and the monkey vibrated — positive feedback that, over time, helps his brain relearn how to react to stimulation, which in turn helps relieve McCoy's symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, trauma and burnout. THE DENVER POST - METERED SITE Oklahoma fire station catches fire, destroying gear and apparatus VIDEO: The Webbers Falls Fire Station in eastern Oklahoma caught fire Wednesday, destroying one building and all the gear inside it. "Our department is now on the ground," Webbers Falls Fire Chief Shawn Smith said. "It was heartbreaking, this is our second home, we spend a lot of time down here." Smith and other volunteer firefighters were out of town attending training for severe weather when the fire was reported before 2 P.M. Wednesday afternoon. The department's tanker, pumper and rescue trucks were not inside the building that caught fire, but, 2 boats, 2 trucks used to fight grass fires and most of the equipment and gear the 16 volunteer firefighters use to keep them safe when fighting fires was destroyed. The state fire marshal will investigate what caused the fire. KHBS/KHOG-TV ABC 40 FORT SMITH Virginia: A candid conversation on the challenges faced by Norfolk's first female firefighter VIDEO: More than 40 years ago, the first woman went through Norfolk's fire academy. Pamela Ells-Johnson was just 25 years old and tells 13News Now that she was simply looking for a career when she applied. She ended up paving the way for women in Norfolk Fire-Rescue. Although back then, it was called Norfolk Fire Department. "I'm so proud of what I accomplished," she told 13News Now. "And when I tell people, they're like, 'You did what?'" The year was 1979 and Ells-Johnson's historic acceptance into the academy was broadcasted by this very TV station across Hampton Roads. Our archives don't even go back that far -- but Ells-Johnson shared her home video of the newscast about her. It was tough work, she recalled, having to carry a lot of equipment, wear the big, heavy clothes and constantly train. But she did it. She proved herself, passing the fire academy. Upon graduation, however, Ells-Johnson made the choice not to pursue the career. WVEC-TV ABC 13 HAMPTON As development booms in one Massachusetts city, fire department upgrades truck PHOTOS: Ever have a hard time making a turn on a tight Wollaston street packed with parked cars? Try doing it in an almost 60-foot-long fire truck. As Quincy's development boom continues, the fire department is preparing to put into service a new, $1.45 million tiller truck to help firefighters take tight turns and get closer to ever-taller buildings. The truck, with two drivers, one in the front and one in the back, has two chassis and can pivot in the first third of the rig, like a tractor trailer, to make it more nimble. "The primary reason for the truck is the city is getting built out, there's more cars, more congestion, smaller streets," said acting Fire Chief Joe Jackson. "This is like the Holy Grail of fire trucks. Chiefs across the state are jealous." The truck will be Ladder 2 in the Wollaston fire station on Beale Street.
