A house fire on the West Side overnight has left a man dead and sent two women to a hospital for treatment of possible smoke inhalation. The fire broke out after 11:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 5100 block of Grovehill. San Antonio firefighters say they arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the single-story home. They say neighbors already had rescued a 94-year-old woman and her 76-year-old daughter from the burning home. However, they were told that a 68-year-old man, the son of the older woman, was still inside the home, apparently in a section that was heavily involved in fire. Fire crews had to put out the fire before they could enter that portion of the home. They say they later found the body of that man in a front room. The two women were taken to a hospital by ambulance to be checked for smoke inhalation. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO The SAFE-D Board of Directors, at their annual meeting, announced that Billy Ted Smith of Jasper County ESD No.1 is the new president of the association, according to a press release. The Texas State Association of Fire and Emergency Districts is a statewide association that started in 2001 with the goal of helping men and women who serve the Emergency Services Districts (ESDs) of the state to improve the protection that they provide to the residents of their district. ESDs provide fire, emergency medical response or both to their constituents. More than 41 million people live in an ESD which is a population greater than 41 of the nation's 50 states. Smith, who was named to the SAFE-D Board of Directors in 2016 and served as the Vice-President for the past four years, will assume the presidency for two years subject to re-election. BEAUMONT ENTERPRISE PHOTOS: A fire on County Road 1103 in Morris County destroyed a home Tuesday evening. No injuries were reported, according to the Daingerfield Fire Department. Tuesday was a busy day for the Daingerfield Fire Department. DFD chief Jimmy Cornelius said they were dispatched out to two other calls before they were sent to the structure fire on CR 1103. Cornelius said the home's lone occupant told Morris County Sheriff's Office deputies that she thought the fire started in or around a wood-burning stove in the house. The home was fully engulfed in flames when Daingerfield firefighters arrived on the scene, Cornelius said. He added that the fire got very hot because of the home's metal roof and said the house was a total loss. Personnel from LifeNet EMS checked the house's occupant out to make sure she was OK, Cornelius said. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER Residents of a far Southeast Side home have been displaced following a house fire late Wednesday night, the San Antonio Department said. The fire was called in just after 11 p.m. at a home in the 700 block of Utopia Lane, not far from Goliad Road and Highway 281. Firefighters said they arrived to find heavy flames coming from the front right side of the house. The fire was knocked down quickly and without incident. Fire officials said the three residents inside the home managed to get out safely. No one was hurt. Damage to the home however, was described as being "severe". The residents for now will need another place to stay, firefighters said. The San Antonio Fire Department, the San Antonio Police Department and EMS all answered the call. The cause of the fire is not currently known. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Houston rapper Travis Scott returned to social media Tuesday night for one of the first times since 10 concertgoers were killed in the Astroworld tragedy in November of 2021. HEAL -- That's the name of his new project focused on event safety. He said he's investing $5 million in communities in Texas, and historically-Black colleges and universities in the Houston area could benefit too. In a post on Instagram, Scott said he feels as a leader in the community, he needed to step up. "Over the past few months I've been taking the time and space to grieve, reflect and do my part to heal my community," Scott said. "Most importantly, I want to use my resources and platform moving forward towards actionable change. This will be a lifelong journey for me and my family." KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON A house and truck in central El Paso were damaged in a fire Wednesday afternoon. The fire was reported on the corner of Pershing Drive and Rosewood Street. That area is near the Manhattan Heights neighborhood. Fire officials said a woman in her 60s was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A fire official said the woman inside the burning home is incapable of walking and used a wheelchair. It's unknown what caused the fire. Crews of quint 7 and Rescue 7 got the woman out in seconds when they arrived. The woman did not suffer any burn injuries. She was taken to the hospital to be checked for smoke inhalation KFOX-TV FOX 14 EL PASO |

VIDEO: A Forsyth County environmental official was shocked when he learned how much pollution an inferno at a Winston-Salem fertilizer plant was sending into the air. Between midnight and 6 a.m. on Feb. 2, an Environmental Protection Agency air monitor set up at the Wake Forest University Police Station detected that particulate matter, called PM2.5, at an average level of 1,750 micrograms per cubic meter. That's more than five times the 300 micrograms the EPA considers hazardous over eight hours during a fire. "I had a panic attack," Minor Barnette, director of Forsyth County's Office of Environmental Assistance and Protection, told a state environmental committee Wednesday. "I've never seen numbers like that anywhere in North Carolina that I was aware of, and this was right here in our community and within the jurisdiction of our agency." THE NEWS & OBSERVER Some city employees will no longer be tested for marijuana on their drug screenings, and if the contract between the city and the firefighters union is approved, the list of exempt employees could soon grow longer. If the contract is ratified, firefighters will not be tested for marijuana when they go in for drug tests. It's a policy the firefighters union pulled for as they re-negotiated their contract, officials said Tuesday. Chief Brandon Blough said between five and eight firefighters are randomly selected for drug testing, usually about six times per year. The city would still be able to require testing for all the other drugs they're currently screening for. "It's a real dangerous precedent," said Ward 7 Alderman Joe McMenamin. Marijuana testing has already been lifted as a requirement for employees in other areas of the city. WICS-TV ABC 20 SPRINGFIELD PHOTOS: More than two years, $50 million and one ocean crossing later, San Francisco has its newest fire station. And it floats. The San Francisco Fire Department's two-story Fireboat Station 35 opens for operations Thursday on the Embarcadero at Pier 22½, more than a year after it was floated across the bay at low tide in the predawn dark from Treasure Island, where the superstructure was constructed. The 173-foot-long-by-96-foot-wide float that allows the station to ride the tides was specially fabricated in China to withstand tides and natural disasters. That could make all the difference during a fire or earthquake that could crumble buildings on land and potentially leave the station as a last bastion from which to dispatch rescuers and life saving equipment. The battleship-like building is the first and only floating fire station in the Western Hemisphere, according to San Francisco Department of Public Works spokeswoman Rachel Gordon. SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE - METERED SITE Two Phoenix firefighters took him big titles just days ago at The Arnold Classic. Daniel Camacho was named the World's Strongest Firefighter and even got a shout-out from Arnold Schwarzenegger on Instagram. "We all grew up watching him, admiring him, so yeah, it's hard to explain that feeling, you know," said Camacho. Phoenix Firefighter Joshua Murray also competed in The Arnold Classic. He won 3rd place for his weight class in powerlifting. "I was happy, but when they said I won a medal, I was just like, I could believe it," said Murray. The two firefighters spent years training inside the fire station gyms. "One of the reasons I wanted to become a Phoenix firefighter was the first few Phoenix guys I saw were huge," said Murray. "Lifting has always been a huge part of my life, so when I looked into firefighting, I was like this is great," said Camacho. " KASW-CW6 & KTVK-3TV (AZFAMILY.COM) Four months after the deadly Astroworld tragedy that killed 10 concertgoers, rapper Travis Scott announced a $5 million initiative dubbed "Project HEAL" that he says will be a "catalyst for real change" to heal in the aftermath. Scott, 30, detailed Tuesday a four-pronged project that includes solutions to address "challenges facing today's youth, especially those from marginalized and at-risk communities": $1 million in academic scholarships to historically black colleges and universities, free mental health resources, a creative design education program and a new tech-driven solution for event safety. "Over the past few months I've been taking the time and space to grieve, reflect and do my part to heal my community," he wrote in an Instagram post. "Most importantly, I want to use my resources and platform moving forward towards actionable change. This will be a lifelong journey for me and my family." USA TODAY |
