Man dies, woman critical after being pulled from burning home in Houston Paramedics took two people to the hospital after a home caught fire in The Heights overnight. The Houston Fire Department later confirmed one of the patients was later pronounced dead. The fire was reported at about 1:30 a.m. Thursday in the 900 block of Walton at Jewett. Firefighters arrived and found smoke coming from the home with reports of people trapped inside. Firefighters forced entry into the home and found a couch on fire in a back hallway. They also found an adult male and adult female unconscious. Paramedics performed CPR on the man and woman while loading them into an ambulance. Both were listed in serious condition at Memorial Hermann, but the man later died, the fire department stated in a press release. As of 9 a.m. the woman was in critical condition in the hospital. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON Bexar County ESD 2 firefighters implement safeguards to prevent spread of coronavirus Bexar County ESD 2 firefighters are used to handling medical calls and doing everything they can to save lives. Now, they're taking additional measures to keep their own crews healthy and safe. "We have to protect our workforce," said Bexar County ESD 2 Assistant Chief Mark Montgomery. "We're cohabitating in our fire stations, EMS stations, 6-10 people living in one place, so if we expose one person, we're exposing more people." Montgomery says each shift will now start with temperature checks and questions about symptoms. If a firefighter shows any signs of novel coronavirus, they're expected to go home, according to Montgomery. When they show up to medical scenes, one crew member is directed to approach first. "They'll make initial contact from a distance and start asking questions at that point," Montgomery said. The SWAT team was responding to a "man threatening suicide," Standridge said. "They geared up, which is likely what a misinformed viewer saw." Police earlier in the afternoon stated the man did not harm himself. The number of FDNY employees who have tested positive has almost doubled since yesterday, when FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro stated during an interview on Fox News that 46 members had tested positive for coronavirus. Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer announced Tuesday a Louisville firefighter was the first to test positive for the coronavirus. The man is self-isolating at home, Fischer said. But the firefighter was fortunate. The group represents 44 unions and 3,000 professional firefighters statewide. He asked his employees, firefighters, EMTs and paramedics to devote their interest to their primary job for now. The directive raised concerns for firefighters union, said Scott Miller, president of the International Association of Firefighters Local 266.
