Retired North Texas firefighter Don Moser dies from cancer at 56 VIDEO: On Friday, former Argyle mayor and retired firefighter, Don Moser, died at 56 years old from cancer. WFAA has been following Moser's battle against cancer since 2019. He said back then doctors believed it was caused by his occupation as a firefighter, being exposed to carcinogens for decades. Moser started as a volunteer firefighter in Colleyville when he was 16 years old. He worked at the Bedford Fire Department for most of his career, 17 years, and retired at Westlake Fire Department in 2005. Cancer is the leading cause of death among firefighters, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health concluded that firefighters face a 9% increase in cancer diagnosis, and a 14% increase in cancer-related deaths, compared to the general U.S. population. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS Cedar Park Fire Department celebrates 'golden' 50th anniversary The Cedar Park Fire Department is celebrating its 50th anniversary today, May 5, 2022. The incorporation of the Cedar Park Fire Department actually pre-dates the incorporation of the City of Cedar Park, according to the Cedar Park Fire Department website. "On May 5, 1972, a small but determined group of volunteers started the department with a used Ward La France Air Force crash truck, some donated bunker gear, and a lot of grit!" according to the website. At the time, Cedar Park's population was reportedly around 700 and there was only one traffic signal in town: a flashing yellow light where what is now Whitestone Boulevard (RM 1431) from the west ended at what is now Bell Boulevard (US 183). There also was no emergency dispatch system – just a siren on top of a store, according to the fire department. KTBC-TV FOX 7 AUSTIN A warning about solar panels after man's home almost burns down in Melissa VIDEO: If you've ever thought about having solar panels installed on your home, one Melissa resident wants you to know there is a rare possibility they could catch fire. It happened to him last month. "These neighborhoods... we have a lot of people who come by who are salesmen and they want to sell us their solar panels," Austin Nathaniel said. Just over a year ago, his neighbor decided to do business with one. "So I waited a year to see what he thought about them," Nathaniel said. "Are they a good company? Is he getting what he thought? He loved it so I went with the company." He said at first his experience was great, but then about four months in he got a call from a neighbor telling him to get home right away because some of the solar panels were on fire. KTVT-TV CBS 11 FORT WORTH Oak Hill Fire Department fights mobile home fire in Austin PHOTO: Crews from the Oak Hill Fire Department were busy Thursday morning trying to control a fire at a mobile home. Fire crews say the fire broke out around 1:45 a.m. at 8705 High Valley Road. That's near the intersection of FM 1826 and Slaughter Lane. Oak Hill Fire Chief Jeffrey Wittig told KXAN crews do not know what caused the fire. Crews had to shut down FM 1826 for a time to get their gear to a nearby hydrant. "In this particular area, there just doesn't happen to be any fire hydrants. So our closest hydrant is quite a distance away and across a major street," Wittig said. Everyone inside the mobile home made it out. The fire started in the back of the structure and did not spread to nearby homes. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Firefighters responded to a fire at San Antonio gas station Firefighters responded to a fire that had occurred at a gas station on the Southwest side of San Antonio. Firefighters were dispatched to 400 New Laredo Highway at around 6:12 p.m. Upon arrival, firefighters say they saw smoke coming from the roof and through the front doors of the building. They said it took a little bit longer than normal to find the source of the fire. The store was occupied when the fire began, but all employees and customers managed to evacuate safely. The gas station suffered damage in the attic, office, and storage area. Fire officials say that the cause of the fire was an electrical problem. No injuries were reported. WOAI-TV NBC/CW 4 SAN ANTONIO Emergency response professionals rappel at Kyle Field in College Station, gaining real-world experience VIDEO: The Texas A&M TEEX Extension gathered first responders from the area and around the nation to gain real world training in repelling from high structures at Kyle Field. From the Brazos Valley and countries apart, Shannon Mauras with the Brazos County Precinct 3 Volunteer Fire Department said emergencies happen daily and this is the best preparation. "College Station - it seems like a very safe place, but there is always some way people can get themselves in situations whether its construction or high-line poles." said Mauras. "We have to be ready to meet that every changing landscape." TEEX students from the advanced rope rescue course practiced a variety of rescues around Kyle Field, including traveling on a rope between the two goalposts inside the stadium. TEEX Rescue Instructor Luis Cuevas says this is a passion for him. KXXV-TV ABC 25 WACO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Railroad fire burns near downtown Phoenix along I-10; freeway reopens Firefighters extinguished a massive fire burning west of downtown Phoenix that temporarily shut down Interstate 10 Wednesday night. The second-alarm fire was burning at Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway near 19th Avenue and McDowell Road on May 4, officials said. First responders discovered a large pile of railroad ties fully engulfed in flames. The situation was treated as a hazmat incident because of the unknown contents of the nearby railcars. The Arizona Dept. of Public Safety shut down I-10 at 7th Avenue for several hours due to the direction of the smoke and the proximity of the fire. "Fire control was achieved approximately two hours after the initial dispatch," officials said in a statement. "Crews will remain on the scene throughout the night to extinguish all remaining hotspots." KSAZ-TV FOX 10 PHOENIX Surviving firefighter of deadly Maryland building collapse honors his fallen colleagues VIDEO: The sole survivor of a deadly building collapse that killed three Baltimore City firefighters honored his fallen comrades Wednesday on International Firefighters Day. Firefighter John McMaster was critically injured on Jan. 24 when he and his fellow firefighters battled a blaze at a vacant home in the 200 block of South Stricker Street in West Baltimore's Mount Clare section. Baltimore City Firefighters Lt. Paul Butrim, Kelsey Sadler and Kenny Lacayo were killed. McMaster was pulled from the rubble and spent three days at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. "To say this year has been challenging would be an understatement. I have witnessed firsthand the dedication and commitment demonstrated by our firefighters to protect the lives of others in our community," McMaster said in a video posted to social media. WBFF-TV FOX 45 BALTIMORE Three workers rescued in South Boston construction site collapse VIDEO: Three workers were injured in a collapse at a construction site in South Boston. Boston Fire Commissioner Jack Dempsey said emergency crews were called to the Edison Power Plant building around 1:40 p.m. Two of the injured workers were able to be removed immediately. A third person was trapped, prompting a rescue operation with about 100 firefighters in support roles, Dempsey said. Dempsey said the worker had part of a wall leaning on his lower legs. He was freed after more than three hours and taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. "Demolition drops are very dangerous. Probably more dangerous than putting buildings up," Dempsey said. Dempsey added that the building at 776 Summer Street is old and has experienced other problems over time. "We've had a lot of serious problems with this building over the years," he said. "I recall way back, we had a nine-alarm fire here, so this is nothing new to us." WFXT-TV FOX 25 BOSTON Patio, meditation garden and kitchen prioritize wellbeing of firefighters in new Minnesota station VIDEO: Mental Health Awareness month kicks off this week, which is the same time a brand new fire station opens to the public in Burnsville. It's designed to prioritize the wellbeing of firefighters and paramedics. From a meditation garden to a wellness room, there are many features that promote relaxation. There are also decontamination zones to separate firefighters from the chemicals that put them at a risk that Burnsville Assistance Chief Terry Ritchie says is three times higher than other people to get cancer. "It's extremely important after a fire that we get these guys showered and get that dirty gear off as quick as possible," said Ritchie. "We're saving our own lives." The new station is divided into three contamination zones to segregate dirty equipment and gear recently used on a call from gear that is in the process of decontamination and the fully clean area.
