Abilene Fire Chief addresses impact of COVID-19 on department The Abilene Fire Department was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, having 49 of its members test positive for the virus. AFD's Fire Chief Cande Flores addressed the situation in a press release Wednesday: "The Abilene Fire Department has experienced a direct impact due to the COVID-19 coronavirus. To date, 49 firefighters have tested positive for the virus, and an additional 6 have self-quarantined due to direct exposures. These numbers required us to adjust programs and reassign personnel in order to maintain adequate staffing levels in Operations. Our "healthy" AFD personnel have been challenged in a way that is unprecedented in our Department. They have responded by rising to the challenge and working additional overtime hours in order to support our mission and maintain the level of service expected from our citizens. KXVA/KIDY-TV FOX ABILENE/SAN ANGELO Design project highlights need for North Beach substation long with drainage, better access to emergency services is an important issue for North Beach residents, which is why they say the area needs a police and fire substation. Right now first responders have to cross the Harbor Bridge to get to North Beach. Residents call that problematic. "The Harbor Bridge is what connects us to Corpus Christi, and if anything happens on the Harbor Bridge, like a big wreck, police and fire cannot reach us," said Carrie Robertson-Meyer. Residents, like Meyer, don't expect things to get much better with the new Harbor Bridge. "The new Harbor Bridge will put us even farther from our current fire station and farther from the police station," said Meyer. With those concerns in mind, members of the North Beach Task Force worked with second-year Del Mar College architecture students to design a potential substation. KRIS-TV NBC 6 CORPUS CHRISTI Explosion, fire destroy PF&E truck during diesel delivery in Early An explosion and fire destroyed the cab of a PF&E Oil Co. pumper truck that was delivering diesel fuel to tanks behind the Early Fire Department and utility building Wednesday morning. The driver was flown by helicopter to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Early City Administrator Tony Aaron said. The cause of the fire and explosion, which happened shortly before 10 a.m., had not been determined as of early Wednesday afternoon, Brownwood Fire Marshal Buddy Preston said. A 500-gallon diesel fuel tank next to the truck ruptured and was involved in the fire, Aaron and Preston said. "The tank did show signs of explosion," Preston said. The truck was loaded with 1,250 gallons of fuel when it left the PF&E yard Wednesday morning, Preston said. It had not been determined how much fuel remained in the truck at the time of the fire. BROWNWOOD BULLETIN Update: Corpus Christi firefighters injured during fire released from hospital Three firefighters have been released from the hospital following a house fire. Two firefighters were treated for minor burns and one firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation. They were hurt while putting out a fire at a home on 7500 Block of Cannes near Yorktown and Cimarron Tuesday night. We're told the homeowner was doing some copper soldering when it spread to the attic where the fire started. The family was able to get out safely. "The fire department was phenomenal," said neighbor Travis Emerson. "I mean, the first responders and what they're going through with all the COVID-19 and everything else – to be able to come out here and take care of this: They did an amazing job. Amazing. Fast. They were awesome. " KRIS-TV NBC 6 CORPUS CHRISTI Blue Angels flyover pays tribute to frontline workers in Dallas-Fort Worth The Navy's Blue Angels honored workers on the front lines of the coronavirus crisis Wednesday in North Texas. Many people came out of their homes, some gathering in parks or parking lots, to watch the flyover. They applauded and cheered flight demonstration squadron passed overhead for as part of the America Strong effort. The jets started over McKinney and flew over several Dallas-Fort Worth hospitals. They looped around both downtown areas. Healthcare workers at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in McKinney said the tribute was emotional for them. It was also a reminder that we are all in this together. Tameka Simmons and Ginger Thomas who are both veterans now work at the hospital. "It's so amazing. I appreciate everything that they're doing. It shows they appreciate us and they recognize the things that we do and how we put ourselves out there," Simmons said. New York Mayor: City could see more layoffs of first responders without financial assistance from Washington If the federal government does not come to the rescue with financial assistance, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio says that the city may be forced to lay off city employees like police officers, firefighters, and healthcare workers. "They found $58B effortlessly for the airline industry, why are they not helping America's cities and states get back on their feet," de Blasio asked. The mayor's announcement ignited a firestorm of criticism from various unions in the city, representing various groups of city employees. "First responders are not political pawns, firefighters are not political pawns, we are the people who protect this city," said Gerald Fitzgerald of the Uniformed Firefighters Association. "Our entire social fabric is under tremendous strain and police officers are already stretched thin trying to maintain order," said PBA President Patrick Lynch. "If we cut cops, there will be chaos instead of recovery." WNYW-TV FOX 5 NEW YORK With devastating speed, coronavirus spread through a California fire station; these firefighters battled back On a cold Sunday night in March, Long Beach firefighter and paramedic James Dolas began to feel the first tingle of illness. The next day, as the 34-year-old came down with a fever, sore throat and muscle pain, his supervisor delivered the bad news: He feared that Dolas and other firefighters at Station 11 had been exposed to the novel coronavirus. One day later, Dolas and eight other firefighters were confirmed as positive for COVID-19. Soon, that number doubled to 16. Dolas self-isolated in a guestroom at home. He barricaded the door, which didn't lock, with a chair to keep his 3-year-old daughter at bay. But he wondered whether he had already passed the virus on to her, as well as his 1-year-old daughter and his wife. For the Long Beach Fire Department, the outbreak spurred a race to contain the spread of the virus — and led to changes likely to remain mainstays of how their first responders handle emergency calls related to the coronavirus. LOS ANGELES TIMES - METERED SITE CDC Says These Places Are the Most Vulnerable to Disasters Like COVID Pandemic As the United States enters its third month fighting the coronavirus pandemic, between 20,000 and 30,000 new cases have been diagnosed every day since the start of May. Even as data` remains highly limited, trends are beginning to emerge about which groups and parts of the United States are being hit the hardest — by the disease as well as economically. Testing rates vary considerably between states and counties, making it difficult to assess the impact of the coronavirus on certain communities. In order to attempt to identify at-risk communities, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the counties and county equivalent geographies that rank as the most vulnerable in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Social Vulnerability Index. The index uses data from 2018 to measure the ability of communities to prevent human suffering and financial loss when confronted with disasters or disease outbreaks. 24/7 WALL ST. University of Pennsylvania researchers believe dogs could be used to detect COVID-19 Researchers at Ivy League schools are looking into a theory that dogs can detect the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, with their noses. Man's best friend has a sense of smell that is tens of thousands of times more sensitive than humans and CBS's Chip Reid reports that it's a tool that could be helpful to monitor the spread of the virus. Reid reports that Miss M and Pancho are two of eight Labrador Retrievers working with the University of Pennsylvania's School of Veterinary School of Medicine, where researchers hope to show that dogs can sniff out COVID-19. As you can see in the video above, when a dog detects a particular scent, they press a machine which beeps and they are then rewarded with treat. Dr. Cynthia Otto, the Director of Penn Vet's Working Dog Center tells Reid that dogs have been used to sniff out diseases in the past. WHP-TV CBS 21 HARRISBURG ‘Heal the World': Florida 9-year-old shows support for first responders with YouTube video VIDEO: Bailee Bonick isn't crafty, but she is creative. When the 9-year-old Palm Beach Gardens resident saw her friends creating masks, cards and posters to support others during the coronavirus crisis, she decided to assist in her own, unique way. A longtime singer and theater veteran, Bailee created a YouTube video that pays tribute to first responders around the country. The 5-minute video, which has racked up more than 1,400 views since it was posted last week, features the All Saints Catholic School fourth-grader singing "Heal the World" while photos of doctors, nurses, firefighters, police officers and other first responders are shown in the background. Many of the photos feature first responders from Palm Beach County, but there are others from around the country. PALM BEACH POST PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
