VIDEO: A Klein-area homeowner said he had just left his house to run an errand when he got a call from a frantic neighbor. "My neighbor called (and) said lightning had hit the roof and the roof was on fire -- (they) were on the phone with 911 while they were talking to me," Joshua Westbrooks said. Neighbors from across the street recorded video of the aftermath as firefighters worked to put out the flames. "We were able to contain the fire to the attic and preserve most of the first floor," Klein Fire Department Captain Kyle Flores said. But, since the damage was so extensive, the family wasn't able to stay in the house where they raised their kids. "I guess the first step is to find a place to stay tonight and how do we begin to repair? It's our home. We raised our kids here," Ann Westbrooks said.  

VIDEO: In the season of showers and storms, local firefighters are brushing up on their skills and knowledge when it comes to swiftwater rescues. Multiple departments, including Killeen, Temple and Bryan Fire, were out running exercises on the downstream side of the Belton Lake Dam near Miller Springs Park in mid-May. They're only able to train for swiftwater when the dam is releasing plenty of water, as it creates the right conditions."Two months ago, there was no opportunity to train here, but now, thankfully, we've gotten some rains that we needed and it's helped us to get our training in," said Captain Bradley Jansen with the Killeen Fire Department. 6 News got to see the crews in action and also hit the water with them to see what the exercises entail.  

VIDEO: Five-year-old Penelope Cisneros was diagnosed with cancer– and is undergoing chemotherapy in the coming weeks. Wednesday, members of our local arena football team, The Desert Hawks, OFR staff, and some of our local first responders showed their support to brighten her day. "This is a little, I guess, welcome home for Penelope Cisneros. She was diagnosed with cancer and her mom, seeing that she was feeling ill, decided to take her to get it looked at, they had to fly her to a children's hospital in Fort Worth and found out she had, I guess, a tumor in her liver and they had to, you know, take action on that and now she's going through chemo. She got to come home and take chemo in Midland and the whole time she was in Fort Worth she just kept saying she wanted to come back to Odessa. So I just figured to give her a welcome home by getting at least some of the top important community organizations here to welcome her home," said the girl's cousin, Steve Garcia.  

A fire that started in a West Dallas home overnight quickly spread to two neighboring homes, according to Dallas Fire Rescue. No residents were injured during the fires, fire rescue said in a press release. Firefighters were called around 11 p.m. to a structure fire off Hammerly Drive in West Dallas and found a fully engulfed one story house, according to fire rescue. The home's residents were already standing outside when firefighters arrived and officials don't know how many people were in the home. Firefighters requested more personnel and resources as the fire spread to two surrounding homes, the release states. Residents from the two nearby homes made it outside safely and firefighters declared the fire was out at 12:51 a.m.  

Seattle firefighters responded to Lake Union when two houseboats caught fire on Wednesday afternoon. Crews responded to the 1800 block of Westlake Avenue North where two houseboats were on fire, according to Seattle Fire. The fire extended to an adjacent building. The fire was reported under control around 2:30 p.m. and was downgraded from the 2-alarm response. "It's a very tight community here, I received a text saying there was a fire on the dock and one of my boats was engulfed," said Glenn Froehlich, who owns the houseboat that caught fire. He rents out several in the marina. By the time he arrived to see what was happening, the fire was out. "The damage was, of course, significant once I was able to get down to the dock and see what happened," Froehlich said.  

VIDEO: A Detroit fire engine on a run through an intersection, hitting a truck and smashing into a store sign, was captured on video. The incident, which occurred on Saturday (May 11) at the intersection of Puritan Avenue and Schaefer Highway, is just one of many instances involving fire vehicles that have been reported. Officials said the crash was so severe the rig airbags went off, but no patient was in the ambulance when it flipped. Local 4 was told that no medics or the other driver were injured. But, while looking into the numbers, we're told that Detroit fire engine operators have been hitting parked cars, causing damage to firehouse doors incredibly rapidly, including Tuesday morning. The driver of Tuesday's engine crash backed into a woman's car in a parking lot on Woodward Avenue.  

VIDEO: A veteran-founded organization is leveraging mapping technology to help first responders during crises in Tennessee. The Critical Response Group (CRG) aims to enhance emergency response systems in schools across the state. The CRG, founded by veterans, started with a straightforward goal: ensuring accurate maps of schools for public safety and law enforcement use during emergencies. Veteran Alex Carney is the Chief Strategy Officer at CRG. Drawing from their battlefield experience, Carney said the group adapted military mapping and communication techniques for public safety application. "What we did is we took how we map and plan and communicate in that [military] environment, and we applied the same philosophy or the same techniques to help public safety so they can map in big, complicated buildings like a high school that they're not familiar with," Carney said.
