Chief Russell Shelley Sworn In As River Oaks Fire Chief City Manager, Marvin Gregory, swore in Clinton "Russell" Shelley today as the fire Chief of the new and improved full time fire department that starts on Tuesday, October 1st, 2019 at 7:00 A.M. For over 70 years the River Oaks Fire Department has been a volunteer fire department but with volunteerism on the decline, the City has taken the step forward to establish a full-time fire department in order to provide adequate emergency medical and fire service protection to all the citizens in the City of River Oaks. All new full time personnel has been interviewed and hired and Chief Shelley states we are ready to go. CITY OF RIVER OAKS, TX First responders to El Paso mass shooting honored at luncheon J.R. Romero said he worked more than two days straight at the Cielo Vista Walmart to "photograph and document the scene" after the Aug. 3 mass shooting. But that doesn't concern him. "I don't want to consider my feelings," the deputy chief investigator for the El Paso County Medical Examiner said, "There's 22 people that lost their lives and to me that is more concerning when it comes to feelings." And those 22 people have family members that need answers to what happened, he said. Romero was among the first responders honored at an El Paso luncheon Tuesday. El Paso Police and Fire personnel, other law enforcement officers and mental health counselors who responded to the Aug. 3 Walmart mass shooting were also recognized. EL PASO TIMES Accidental Pizza Order 2,300 Miles Away Creates International Friendship Between Canadian, San Antonio Firefighters A mistake by a fire station in Alberta, Canada, led to a pizza delivery in the Alamo City. The Lessler Slave Regional Fire Service in Alberta meant to feed 60 hungry firefighters during a training session earlier this week. When one of the firefighters started ordering 18 large pies, he made an honest mistake that led to free food for men and women in San Antonio. "After a brief conversation he realized ‘Oh, I made a colossal mistake. I ordered pizza but it was Alimo's in Canada,' and I'm like okay," said the owner of Alamo Pizza & Wings Fred Nunez. The pizzas meant for fire crews 2,300 miles away in Slave Lake, Canada, ended up being dinner for firefighters at Stations No. 16 and No. 25 on the South Side of San Antonio. "When they came out, I just explained to them what happened and they were like, ‘Really?' I'm like, ‘Yeah I got 18 pizzas here,'" said Nunez, who delivered the already made pizzas shortly after the mishap. SPECTRUM NEWS Officers fall ill while checking on apparent suicide in southwest Houston A pair of Houston police officers fell ill Wednesday while checking on a man who apparently died by suicide in southwest Houston. The man apparently concocted a lethal gaseous chemical and released it inside a small apartment in the 2100 block of Fountain View, according to Houston Police Department Sgt. Michael Cass. As officers entered the apartment to check on the man's welfare, they were overcome with the fumes and started to fall ill, Cass said. Firefighters and paramedics with the Houston Fire Department rushed to the apartment and treated the officers on scene, both of whom were released without hospitalization. Hazardous materials crews with HFD worked for hours to clean the apartment, Cass said. The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences will determine how the man died. Eighty-two firefighters died while on duty: 44 were volunteer firefighters; 33 were career firefighters; 5 were wildland firefighters. Topics covered include type of duty, cause and nature of injury, multiple fatality incidents, firefighter ages, time of injury, and incidents by state. U.S. FIRE ADMINISTRATION Firefighters union in New York concerned over staffing The Troy Firefighters Union is speaking out about concerns over the number of firefighters on shift at two of the fire stations in the city Eric Wisher, the President of the Troy Uniform Firefighters Association, said at the Bouton Road and Lansingburgh Stations when they get a medical call that means no one is then there to answer a fire call. "Medic two just went out on a call in the east side of the city with engine three," explained Wisher Tuesday night at the Bouton Road Station. "So this engine will be off duty for at least an hour while that ambulance is doing its call." Wisher said because they are at the medical call, no one is available to operate the engine or ladder at those stations. So if a fire were to happen right across the street from one of those two stations that means a crew from another station further away would have to respond. WNYT-TV NBC 13 Pennsylvania Fire Company Launches New Volunteer Recruitment Effort The Radnor Fire Company of Wayne (RFC), today announced the launch of a new recruiting website and direct mail campaign focused on helping boost the fire company's volunteer ranks, while also strongly communicating the many personal benefits and challenges offered by volunteering locally as a firefighter or ambulance member. To help drive traffic and interest in the website and in joining the fire company, Radnor Fire Company is also direct-mailing a new tri-fold recruiting brochure to more than 5,000 heads of households in Radnor Township and the portions of Tredyffrin Township covered by the fire company. "A report released last year by the State of Pennsylvania revealed that that the number of volunteer firefighters in Pennsylvania was at a crisis point," said Radnor Fire Company President, James J. Kelly.
