2 killed, 1 injured in Fort Stockton Fire The Fort Stockton Fire Department is investigating a structure fire that killed two and injured another. The department responded to the fire in the 1900 block of East 50th at 3:46 a.m. on October 23. Upon arrival, responders found the home fully engulfed in flames. They were also told there were two people inside the home. Once the fire was under control, firefighters found the bodies of Lanette Bliznak, 54, and John Seymore, 28. A third person, a 54-year-old man, was taken to the burn unit of University Medical Center in Lubbock. The man was not identified and his condition is unknown. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. KXVA / KIDY - TV Imaginary killer tornado helped Dallas prepare for the real thing Officials were prepared for something worse than Sunday's storms — an EF-4 tornado barreling through downtown Dallas in the middle of the day, killing at least 10 and leaving hundreds injured. But when nine very real tornadoes tore through North Texas last weekend, there were some differences: The strongest tornado was slightly weaker and it moved through North Dallas in the dark of night. More than 1 million Dallas County residents were under tornado warnings Sunday, but remarkably, no one was killed or badly hurt during the storms. That could be partly because officials laid the groundwork for their response more than seven months earlier, preparing for a worst-case weather scenario. DALLAS MORNING NEWS Austin Metro has the fifth highest wildfire risk in the United States and city leaders are pushing for more preparation The Austin Metro is the only area not in California to rank in the top five most wildfire vulnerable metropolitan areas in the country, according to a report published in September by data analytics company Core Logics. According to the rankings, 53,984 Austin residences are at high-to-extreme risk of wildfire damage, and the report estimates a $16.4 billion reconstruction price tag should the metropolitan area fall victim to a wild blaze. District 10 Council Member Alison Alter, who represents a large swath of West Austin that runs adjacent to greenspace and preserves, has been sounding the alarm for some time over the city's and its surrounding suburbs risk. "It's not a matter of if, but when, we have a major wildfire here," Alter said. She said it is up to local government to ensure the city and its property are as prepared as possible for that fateful day. COMMUNITY IMPACT - SOUTHWEST AUSTIN Bovina Fire Dept. promoting railroad safety after 2 crashes involving vehicles and trains in the same day The Bovina Volunteer Fire Department is urging drivers to heed warning signs at railroad crossings after two different crashes between trains and vehicles in Parmer County on the same day. On Saturday, the department responded to a crash between a car and a train at a railroad crossing at North Street in front of City Hall in Bovina. Assistant Fire Chief Daniel Mayberry said the crossing was closed for a while due to construction in the area, but it has since reopened with crossing arms and flashing lights. The driver of the car received several broken bones and a concussion in the wreck and was taken to a hospital in Friona. "We extricated him from the passenger's side of the car," said Mayberry. "He was spun completely around, and we had to pull him from the other side of the car." KFDA-TV NEWSCHANNEL 10 Fire destroys home on Hubbard Creek Lake in Breckenridge Fire destroyed a home on Hubbard Creek Lake in Breckenridge. The Breckenridge Fire Department was called at 9:15 p.m. Wednesday. When they arrived, the house was fully involved. Two others were starting to catch on fire. Firefighters -- with help from Hubbard Creek VFD -- put out the flames. Chief Calvin Chaney said the people inside the home that was destroyed made it out safely and went to a neighbor's house to call 911. Ministerial Alliance helped them find a motel room for the night. They are contacting Red Cross and Salvation Army for further assistance. "Keep the renters, as well as the home owners, in your thoughts," said Chaney. KTXS-TV ABC 12 Clovis Fire trains in danger zone situation The Federal Aviation Administration requires fire stations that are Airport Rescue and Firefighting Certified to do a burn once a year. "I kind of think of it as our family on there and what would you do if that was your wife or kids on there. I've got two little boys and if they were on there, I would do anything to get them off. You can't really put it into words of that feeling other than do what it takes," Clovis firefighter Nikko Hayes said. The Clovis Fire Department came to Lubbock to train in a fossil fuel burning simulation. It's one of only four left in the country. Lubbock Fire Rescue District Chief, Steve Holland said this gives the crews a more realistic feel for what could actually happen. "This gives the guys kind of a unique, an opportunity to fight a fire and it's going to behave the way that the fuel in a plane crash would react," District Chief Holland said. 'It's a crisis'- Group that tracks suicides among firefighters says there are warning signs More firefighters have died by suicide than in the line of duty over the past year, according to the Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance. The numbers are staggering. According to Jeff Dill, founder of FBHA, in the past seven days, eight firefighters across the United States have taken their own lives. One was right here in Fayette County, Georgia. Dill knows the pressure firefighters and first responders face. He wore the uniform for almost 30 years. That's why he travels the country now to educate and teach firefighters and EMS workers behavioral health. Unfortunately, he says, it is a difficult subject to discuss. Many factors affect a firefighter's ability to understand when a fellow brother or sister is suffering, but that does not make it any less critical an issue. WXIA-TV NBC 11 ATLANTA Southern California Fire Has Industry Rethinking Guidance to Dump Burning Trash It was a hot, windy day in Southern California when a trash truck caught fire and the driver dumped the burning garbage on the side of the road. Minutes later, powerful winds blew the flames across a hillside and into a mobile home community, killing two people and destroying dozens of homes. No California law governs how trash haulers respond to a fire in their truck, leaving it to the waste industry to provide guidance. The industry has long recommended drivers quickly unload burning garbage to ensure their safety, prevent explosions and limit damage to vehicles that can cost up to $300,000. Now, as California braces for several days of hot, windy weather, industry leaders are taking a second look at whether the guidance makes sense when the threat of wildfires is high. KNBC-TV NBC 4 LOS ANGELES Pennsylvania House Moves To Exempt Volunteer Fire Companies From Open Records Requests The state House has voted to exempt volunteer fire departments from Pennsylvania's Right to Know Law, which journalists and the general public can use to request information from public entities. Supporters of the bill say it is a needed correction to a burdensome system, but opponents say it just makes the departments needlessly opaque. The Right to Know exemption is one of eighteen bills the legislature is considering this week in a package intended to help fire departments and emergency medical services find more volunteers and get on firmer financial footing. Most aren't controversial. But the exemption prompted debate. Sponsor Lee James, a Venango County Republican, said volunteer fire departments should never have been subject to Right to Know in the first place. ESSENTIAL PUBLIC RADIO 90.5 WESA North Dakota AG: Special plates for firefighters, emergency responders, should be for duration of service A free specialized plate proposed for firefighters and emergency responders was intended to be free for the duration of an individual's volunteer service, not just for the first year, according to an opinion just issued by Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem. The opinion was sought by Senate Transportation Committee Member David Rust, R-Tioga, and House Transportation Committee Chairman Dan Ruby after questions were raised during the 2019 biennium related to implementing Measure 4, approved by voters in 2018. Rust said the House first proposed an amendment limiting free registration to only the first year, saying that the measure was unclear. The Senate, meanwhile, decided to take the measure out, which led the two chambers to seek the Attorney General's opinion on the intent of the bill. Rust said he was pleased with the outcome, and that the opinion clarifies the matter for everyone involved. WILLISTON HERALD Miles Above the Rest: A Look at Nashville Airport's Prehospital Providers EMS structure in urban areas varies to fit the need of the community. It is often part of the Fire Department – but may be a third service separate from police and fire – or follow a public utility model privately contracted to provide EMS services. In more suburban and rural areas EMS often follows a fourth model, with volunteers providing part or all of the EMS care in that county. Responding to emergencies within an airport is a unique challenge that does not fit a traditional model of any kind and carries with it the need for a special response team. During 2017, the Nashville International Airport (BNA) saw 13.5 million passengers pass through its gates. With this influx of travelers comes a wide variety of associated medical emergencies and the need for rapid response. From 2016 to 2018, there was an average of 512 medical emergencies per year at BNA. JEMS.COM PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
