Mineral Wells fire chief retiring May 1; Celebration to be held Friday After serving Mineral Wells for the last seven years, Fire Chief Mike Pool announced he will be retiring on May 1. "It's been an honor for me. I'm very blessed to have had this career path," Pool said. "We've gone from 14 to 24 staff suppression/EMS personnel and they do a wonderful job. They take care of business and I'm going to miss them the most and then working with people at city hall. "I'm going to miss not seeing Mineral Wells turn into the diamond that it's going to be. It's in the process and it's transitioning now, and I want to see that happen even though I'm not working there. It's going to be good." Pool said he can't say enough about how hard his staff has worked over the years. "We provide training and we have to do a lot of continuing education training, but we have eight people here with college degrees; we have 10 people that are driver-operators; there are Fire Officers I through VI, and we have five [employees] that are Fire Officer II and that's just outstanding for a department this size," he said. WEATHERFORD DEMOCRAT New Amarillo fire station to be introduced with open house Fire Station No. 5, located at 3200 S. Washington, will be introduced to the community tomorrow (April 21) with an open house from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Said the Amarillo Fire Department, "Fire Station No. 5 is one of three new fire stations approved by voters in 2016 as part of Proposition 2. The other new fire stations are Fire Station No. 3 (7441 Oxford Drive) and Fire Station No. 9 (2015 Paramount Blvd.). Proposition 2 projects were completed ahead of schedule and under the proposed Proposition 2 budget." "In Amarillo, fire stations are more than just buildings," said Amarillo Fire Department Chief Jason Mays. "Fire stations are part of the communities and neighborhoods they serve. I know our firefighters were extremely grateful that voters approved these improvements and new fire stations in 2016. We are proud of these new fire stations and what they represent – their neighborhoods and our commitment to protecting the public." KAMR-TV NBC 4 AMARILLO Man arrested for arson after attempting to set his parents' home on fire in East Lubbock A Lubbock man was arrested earlier this month for probable cause of arson after a police report said he attempted to intentionally set his parents' home on fire in East Lubbock. Just before 8:30 p.m., March 31, an officer responded to the 2600 block of Parkway Drive, according to a Lubbock Police report. When the officer arrived on-scene, the Lubbock Fire Rescue suppression crew said it responded to a residential structure fire. However, there was no smoke or fire showing. An LFR official told police the fire was out upon arrival, and a suspect, Timothy Edward Stephens, 54, was taken into custody on related charges, according to the report. According to LFR, Fire Marshals conducted the investigation of the residence, and they found multiple signs of ignition in different areas. Stephens remained in the Lubbock County Detention Center Monday on an arson charge. The case remained under investigation by FMO. KLBK-TV CBS 13 LUBBOCK Arrest made in connection with 3 fires in Marshall Firefighters extinguished three fires in the city on Saturday. A house fire was reported just after 10:30 p.m. Saturday. All three fires were extinguished by the fire department, and no one was injured in any of the incidents. All three fires are still under investigation by the Fire Marshal's Office. Two individuals were detained for questioning by the Marshall Fire Department Fire Marshal and Marshall Police Department. One arrest was made and the individual was transported to the Harrison County Jail Annex. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER Animals recovered from house fire in south Amarillo A fire at a home in Amarillo on Monday was contained to the exterior, according to fire crews. Crews were called to the 4000 block of Cline Road around 10:49 a.m. They found a fire in the back of the home burning up the side of the house from a wooden deck. Crews cut the siding on the home back to see if the flames had spread. The people living there were not home at the time. The fire did not spread to the interior of the building and was called under control by 11:01 a.m. Fire crews, medical staff and police all responded to the area. Three dogs and a cat were recovered from the home. No cause has yet been determined. Tulsa First Responders Recall Devastation Of Oklahoma City Bombing 26 Years Later First responders from all over Green Country were some of the first people on scene at the Oklahoma City bombing 26 years ago. "We watched it unfold and everybody is wanting to go help," said Tulsa Fire District Chief Pete Matlock. Matlock shared pictures from his time sorting through the wreckage in downtown Oklahoma City. He was sent to help a few days after the bombing. "Seeing a building like that was so ominous, it was something I had never seen before," Matlock said. Matlock describes almost every waking hour of the four days he spent there in what he calls an "ant train." "You would hand it to somebody, they would hand it down," he said. He said at that point, his mission was focused on body recovery, not rescue. Matlock remembers vivid details, like the smell of Little Caesar's cinnamon rolls, that employees made for the rescuers even though the bombing destroyed most of the restaurant. "They set up these tents and took care of us," said Matlock. KOTV-DT CBS 6 TULSA Florida: Kennedy Space Center firefighter rides in F-16 with Thunderbird pilot Andrew Morgan, a firefighter at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity over the weekend. He took off in the backseat of an F-16 with Thunderbird Major Jason Markzon as his pilot. Prior to the flight, he was showed the ropes by Thunderbirds and given a brief training session. "It was surreal. It gave me a different perspective, obviously, from everything I'm used to and see on a daily basis," Morgan said. "To be able to do those maneuvers and what the guys are capable of is mindblowing." Firefighter Morgan is already a real-life hero. He made a daring rescue back in October, bringing three painters to safety at the Vehicle Assembly Building at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. They were hanging 375 feet above the ground after a scaffolding broke. Morgan reportedly repelled down the building, strapping one of the men to his body. The other two were hauled to the roof by the rest of his team. WTVT-TV FOX 13 TAMPA J. IAFC.ORG Pennsylvania firefighters rally at state Capitol for online fundraisers during pandemic It's hard enough to be a volunteer firefighter. They rush into burning buildings. They get up in the middle of the night to battle blazes. They save lives. "I personally don't think you should be selling hoagies in the rain, in the freezing cold, on the weekend," Pennsylvania state Rep. Ryan Warner, R-Fayette County, told a group of firefighters assembled at the state Capitol Monday morning. He's hoping his recently introduced legislation will do just that – take some of the burden of fundraising off of firefighters. Fundraisers are what pay the bills for Pennsylvania's volunteer fire companies, but the coronavirus pandemic brought these efforts to a halt with restrictions on in-person gatherings. At first, some fire companies were holding online raffles, and that was working great, until they were contacted by the state police and their county treasurers' offices, saying under their small-games-of-chance licenses, they were not permitted to accept credit or debit card payments. PENNLIVE.COM Dodgeball for firefighters: New York volunteers practice breath control by playing in full gear PHOTO: On Friday evening, members of five local fire departments were engaged in a fierce fight — not with a fire, but with each other. Instead of their usual tools — hoses, axes and ladders — they were chucking foam balls at each other, playing dodgeball. It was a strange sight to see. Firefighters from the Saranac Lake, Lake Placid, Bloomingdale, Paul Smiths-Gabriels and Duane volunteer fire departments packed into the gymnasium of the Citizen Advocates building (the former Pius X high school) in Saranac Lake, paying dodgeball in full firefighting gear. It was a fun way to practice an important skill. It was an air consumption drill, teaching members breath control and oxygen conservation. "It helps build confidence for them in case they're in a situation where their TAS alarm goes off and they're either trapped or they need a little more time to get out of a burning building," Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department Second Assistant Chief Doug Peck said.
