Costs associated with new fire apparatus have escalated significantly along with everything else recently. Yet, having apparatus that meets your agency’s operational requirements is critical for your firefighters and the community you serve. Therefore, understanding the total cost of fire truck ownership, including replacement, is essential to your agency’s success. Luckily, these life-cycle costs can be identified and a strategy for obtaining new apparatus put in place. This article highlights what to consider to ensure you have the apparatus assets you need to sustain your mission.

VIDEO: What we can't see from the human eye, Buzzy can likely smell. "We call him Buzz for short," said his handler, Scott Allen. He's with the Fort Worth Fire Department's arson and bomb unit. In 2019, Buzz and Allen became a team. They are one of only two ATF canine-handler teams in North Texas, the other being in Lewisville. ATF stands for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. There are 64 ATF canines across the country. This means Buzz and Allen serve all of North Texas and even worldwide when the call comes. This week, Buzz, Allen and the Fort Worth Fire Department are hosting all 64 canines and their handlers for an annual event at the Bob Bolen Safety Complex. It's the ATF Accelerant Detection Canine Recertification for 2023. "I had the privilege to host this year," said Allen.

Montgomery County Emergency Services District No. 10, which serves Magnolia, celebrated the hiring of 11 full-time firefighters during a swearing-in ceremony April 21, according to an April 24 news release. The firefighters were sworn in by fire Chief Jeff Hevey. "You have chosen a rewarding profession," Hevey said during the ceremony, according to the news release. "You will have the opportunity to change, protect and save lives as a member of the Magnolia Fire Department." ESD 10, which has a 164-square-mile service area, is also underway with projects to rebuild and remodel stations 182, 183 and 186 and build a maintenance and logistics facility in Pinehurst, Community Impact previously reported. These new firefighters will serve alongside the 12 full-time firefighters who joined the department last August, according to previous reporting.

A case of suspected arson is under investigation after two fires in a Fort Hood building were extinguished, according to the Fort Hood Press Center. The Fort Hood Fire Department was dispatched at approximately 1 a.m. Saturday to a building on post in response to a fire alarm. Crews arrived and forced entry into a laundry room. Two separate fires were identified in a washer and dryer. Both fires were quickly extinguished, with minimal structural damage reported. All occupants of the barracks were safely evacuated. The Fort Hood Press Center says it is believed the fires were intentionally started. During a walkthrough of the building, military police officers were informed by the staff duty officer that walls and windows on the building were vandalized – and the paint appeared to be fresh.

VIDEO: A North Texas firefighter isn't fighting fires but fraud after someone stole his identity and then used it to buy several cars in the Houston area. "The last time I was in Houston was probably when I played college baseball," Shelby Ford, a Fort Worth-area firefighter, told only KPRC 2. That's why it came as a big surprise when his parents received mail for him from a loan company for a car bought in his name in the Houston area. "It kind of started as a joke, like, ‘I didn't know you bought a car?'," he said. He didn't even know his identity had been stolen until he received the mail. The joke turned into a big headache. "It makes you panic because, you know, you don't want it to hit you in areas where it's going to kind of scrap you and your everyday life," Ford said.

Part of downtown Mason City is closed off after a fire destroyed the historic Kirk Apartments on Monday. The building is located at 206 North Federal Avenue which is part of Mason City's historic district in downtown. Barricades are placed on North Federal Avenue to keep people safely at a distance. According to Mason City Fire Chief Erik Bullinger, firefighters were called to the building shortly after 1:30 p.m. Monday where the fire was contained to a lower unit apartment. Fire crews initially thought they had most of it out, but then the fire got in between two floors and began traveling throughout the building and into other units. As of 9:30 p.m. Monday, firefighters considered the fire to be "mostly out," but planned to keep two trucks pouring water onto the fire into the overnight hours.

VIDEO/PHOTOS: A popular D.C. breakfast spot is sending a warning to other businesses after falling victim to a scam Saturday. Pearl's Bagels in Mount Vernon Triangle is out nearly a thousand dollars after a man claiming to be a fire equipment inspector stole from them. Oliver Cox, the owner of Pearl's Bagels, told FOX 5 the scammer knew what he was doing. It all happened pretty fast, according to Cox. It started when a man who introduced himself as Jim Stance walked into Pearl's on Saturday. "It was very elaborate. It was very conniving," Cox explained. Surveillance video shows the scammer telling the manager at the store that he needed to inspect the ANSUL system, a fire prevention tool required in restaurants. The scammer told the manager that the owner must have forgotten to tell her that he was coming, specifically using the owner's name.

VIDEO/PHOTOS: Thirty years ago Catoosa didn't have sirens, only had a volunteer fire department and cell phones were just starting to become a thing. That's how Catoosa Fire Chief Denus Benton remembers it. FOX23 talked to him Monday, 30 years since a supercell storm spawned a tornado that killed seven people and left a path of destruction and injuries through Tulsa and Catoosa. "It's just this distinct sound, just like a train and it's just roaring and the house is shaking and everything is moving," Chief Benton recalled. He said he was a volunteer firefighter at the time, as the city didn't have full-time firefighters. His chief at the time, Walter Sunny, also remembered the vivid details that come with witnessing a tornado. "It sounds just like everyone says," Sunny explained. "The house vibrated. I was watching things flying through the air, the trees were bending in shapes I had never seen before."

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating fires on two separate American Airlines flights, after two planes over the past week reported engine damage in North Carolina and Ohio. American Airlines Flight 2288 canceled its takeoff from Charlotte-Douglas International Airport in North Carolina last Thursday, due to a possible engine fire, the FAA told The Hill. A second plane, American Airlines Flight 1958, returned to John Glenn Columbus International Airport in Ohio on Sunday after a possible bird strike. The FAA said it would investigate both incidents. The plane that might have struck a bird, headed from Ohio to Phoenix, Arizona, was seen on fire in a cellphone video confirmed by NBC News. The video showed spurts of flames shooting out from the right side of the plane as it flew.

VIDEO: Who does the Toledo Fire & Rescue Department call when they need help? Two Toledo Technology Academy seniors answered their call. For years, while on the scene of an emergency, TFRD personnel stayed connected through mobile data terminals. But recently, the clips that hold the styluses to the tablets have been breaking. "These devices are used every day, all day by our crews," TFRD public information officer Pvt. Sterling Rahe said. "I can speak from experience, when that piece is missing and the stylus isn't there, it becomes very cumbersome." Instead of constantly buying replacements and waiting for shipping, TFRD reached out to TTA to see if students could come up with a solution. Seniors Drew Baumgartner and Tristin Free-Knack took on the challenge. They designed and 3D-printed a prototype replacement in less than two hours.
