Austin firefighters union backs mental health rescue plan VIDEO: Austin firefighters, at a minimum, put in a 53-hour work week, 24 hours on, 48 hours off. Because of staffing issues, answering the growing number of calls requires an increasing rate of overtime. It's a crisis, according to Bob Nicks of the Austin Firefighters Association, but it's not about compensation. "Yeah, they're getting paid, but it's taking a toll rather than the overtime. We need more time off. We need more time between shifts or more time, or we're not working extra duty, so we can think about these experiences, reconnect with our families, and go back to work rested and ready to go again. And that's really the crux of the problem," said Nicks. Austin firefighters, at a minimum, put in a 53-hour work week, 24 hours on, 48 hours off. KBTX-TV CBS 3 BRYAN State of Texas seeks more veterans, first responders to serve as teachers Texas lawmakers are trying to give school districts one more tool to help them fill vacant positions in the classroom. House Bill 621, a provision to current law, was enacted during the last legislative session to certify military service members and first responders to teach. Bill author State Rep. Matt Shaheen, District 66, said he's aware that the bill has not made a big dent in the education shortage problem. "We certainly can do a better job of promoting it. There's some things that we can do with respect to communicating through our veterans organizations and, like, throughout the state of Texas," Shaheen said. "But I think we do need to take a look at the scope. It's just too narrow. And, quite frankly, there's a lot that our military — a lot of their experiences that they can share with these students in a learning environment. Obviously, that would just be so beneficial to our students." KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Canyon Fire Department sees rise in rescues from Palo Duro Canyon due to heat VIDEO: Due to heat related illnesses, Palo Duro Canyon State Park and the Canyon Fire Department had to rescue at least one person each day last week at the Lighthouse Trail. "With it being hotter, once a day we go out there, sometimes more. We may go out there for one person and we end up being there all day pulling people off the trail," said Canyon Fire Department Firefighter Guadalupe Avalos. First responders say visitors should go to the park during the morning when it is cooler and come prepared with proper clothing and water. "Every summer we continue to see an increase of people who are not prepared, not educated, don't take the time to read the warning signs we have posted around the park, and we see a large uptick in our rescues each year," said PDC Assistant Superintendent Zach McMeans. Caught on Camera: Equipment stolen from fire department in Washington VIDEO: A fire department in Pierce County is now missing tens of thousands of dollars' worth of gear after it was stolen in the middle of the night last week. And whoever did it may be connected to another crime that same night, just a few miles away. More than $30,000 worth of fire gear and equipment was stolen from the Key Peninsula Fire Department last Thursday. Security video shows a silver truck with two people inside, pulling up behind the fire station in Key Center just after midnight. Thieves broke into fire utility vehicles and a water rescue vehicle. Assistant Chief Chris Beswick told KIRO 7 they stole fire gear, including uniforms, five high-end radios valued up to $8,000 apiece, and four drysuits used for water rescues. Beswick says the thefts come at a steep cost – for the small department and the community. KTBC-TV FOX 7 AUSTIN Located in North Carolina, one of the country's first all-electric fire stations will use no outside energy sources Charlotte, N.C.'s new Fire Station #30 will be one of the country's first all-electric fire stations, using no outside energy sources other than diesel fuel for one or two of the fire trucks. Multiple energy sources will power the station, including solar roof panels and geothermal wells. The two-story building features three truck bays, two fire poles, dispatch area, contamination room, and gear storage. The $16.4 million, 14,000 sf station will be completed next fall. It will replace the original Station #30, a 1950's-era residential home that was converted to a fire station in 1991. The new two-story building includes a fitness area with locker rooms, a kitchen and dining facility, a day room lounge, and offices for the captain and battalion chief. The second floor houses sleeping quarters and additional lockers and restrooms. BUILDING DESIGN+CONSTRUCTION 'Burned' documentary sparks awareness about firefighting gear awash in carcinogenic water repellent chemicals VIDEO: Retired Fire Capt. Richard Birt is trying to spread the word about a new documentary entitled "Burned: Protecting the Protectors" by Ethereal Films. In the past Birt has visited fire departments in Ventura County and along the coast giving talks about fire safety around batteries and solar panels found in house fires. Now he is trying to let firefighters everywhere know carcinogens have been found in protective gear. Chemicals called PFAS, short for polyfluoroalkyl, are the issue. Oscar nominated actor Mark Ruffalo, who stars in the film "Dark Waters" about cancer exposure due to chemicals, gives his final thoughts in "Burned" and urges firefighters to take action. "Your protective wear is also awash in these forever chemicals, both on the outside and the inside," said Ruffalo.
